9. Chapter 9 (:

Niall’s P.O.V.

Tuesday had been rougher than I expected it to be. I still wonder how I managed to do it: to look Aubrey in the eyes, those beaming emerald globes, and tell her I wanted nothing to do with her anymore. Whatever, it was done and over with: Aubrey and I were no longer friends, which means we will never have to discuss the eventful night I shot her father in the arm. Once again, it was about me and no one else.

I turn my head cautiously and pull the hood from my pullover on. Josh Devine, one of the boys on the team, promised to meet me behind the third row of the locker room to deal me a few more pills in exchange for a load of cash. However, with the sound of the shower dripping, I realize I am here completely alone. That is, until I hear footsteps looming toward me, but instead, pause by the second row of lockers.

“Are you serious, Louis?” a voice, recognized as Harry Styles, exclaims. I slyly peer over the row to see the both of them changing into their uniforms. “You mean, you and Aubrey never fucked?”

“Yeah,” Louis mumbles, “but listen, man, keep it between you and me. I lied to the others to shut them the hell up. How would I look if I had her for two years and never had sex with her? On the other hand, after tonight, Aubrey and I are going to give those rumors a bit of truth.”

“What?” Harry exclaims. “She agreed to have sex with you?”

“Yeah,” Louis answers cockily, “she promised a ‘reward’ after the tournament. It took her a while, but come on, who could possibly resist me?” I roll my eyes in response and turn my head to make sure no one notices me listening in on their conversation. The coast is clear.

“What about Jade Thirlwall?” Harry notes. “Are the both of you still fucking? I mean, now that you and Aubrey are on good terms, are you going to call it off with her?”

What did he mean? Afraid they may hear me, I hold my breath as I recollect their conversation. Despite the rumors, Louis and Aubrey never had sex, and now, what the hell?

“I mean, yeah,” Louis answers, “I have to. Jade was nice to have sex with, but now Aubrey is willing to do it, there really is no use for Jade anymore, and come on, Aubrey is a hundred times hotter than Jade.”

“I hear Aubrey tutors Niall Horan now,” Harry laughs, “what about those rumors?”

“She does,” Louis shrugs, “but do you honestly believe he has a chance with her? Come on, Louis Tomlinson or Niall Horan. The lad has nothing going for him at all. Aubrey could possibly care less about ‘em.”

I clench my fists by my side as he continues speaking. Fuck, despite the incident on Tuesday, I have to tell Aubrey. The thought of Louis hovering over her as she moans in pleasure caused by him crawls into my mind and fervently pains me. Louis cheated on her with Jade, and tonight, he would have his way with her…despite how horrible he was to her. After I hear the boys leave for their tournament, I slip out of the locker room and rush to the stands. I had to find Aubrey and tell her before she gets hurt tonight.

In the stands, I see her with Perrie and Jade. She is wearing a replica of his jersey and is wildly screaming for her boyfriend to make the goal. I maneuver through the body of students and cover my ears from the loud noise. When I reach her, I tug her arm to face me and bore my eyes into hers.

“Aubrey,” I hiss, “we need to talk. Now.”

“Leave me alone, Niall,” she argues and returns her attention to Louis, who is on the field about to score until another player steals the ball from him.

“No, Aubrey,” I beg, “you have to listen to me.”

“Do I?” she snaps and turns to me. Her stare drills into me as she places her hands on her hips. “After you pushed me away, do I really have to listen to you? I cannot keep up with you. One minute, you hate me, and another minute, you…I don’t even know!”

“Just promise me,” I reason, “do not have sex with Louis tonight.” Perrie and Jade turn their heads in shock. Fuck. A sudden pain washes over me when Aubrey slaps me. I cup the pain with my hand and avoid her gaze.

“My sex life is none of your business,” she huffs, “what is wrong with you?”

I curse under my breath and shove the loud students out of my way as I rush toward my car. Aubrey has to find out the truth before she makes a mistake with Louis tonight. I force my foot onto the pedal and drive to her flat. I roll down the window and shut off the engine to wait. When the tournament ends, and she returns home with Louis, I will finally reveal the lies Louis had been hiding.

I place my elbow on the door and lean my head against my hand. Fuck, Aubrey literally has me running obstacles for her, but if it means protecting her, I don’t mind it one bit. I turn my head when I hear the door open, and I see her father closing the door behind him. Shit. He recognizes my car and stalks toward me confused.

“What are you doing here, Horan?” he bellows.

“Waiting for Aubrey,” I gulp. I fiddle my fingers and avoid his stare. “How have you been? I mean, with the arm and all?”

“It hurts,” he shrugs, “but what else is new? I think the more important question is what are you planning to do with Aubrey?”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean stay the hell away from her, Horan,” he sneers, “there is more to this than your arrest. With colleges to impress, the least she needs is a distraction. I know you like her. The night of the party, you were going to kiss her, huh?” I swallow a lump in my throat because it drains me to remember the day I let her go without a kiss. It hurts because it led to the even more painful day when I had to be an asshole and push her away. “Don’t even say you were drunk. I’m a cop—I can distinguish the drunk from the sober a mile away. I am telling you now, if you like Aubrey, there are more complications that accompany that than you realize. Be wise, Horan, but I promise not to tell her, not about the shooting, not about the arrest, not even about today, but be ready to eventually if you continue whatever you have going on with her.” He turns on his heel and marches to his car to drive away.

The thoughts swarm inside of me and eat me alive. It hurts to know one day, if Aubrey and I were to even be friends, I would have to face those beautifully rounded eyes and say, “I shot your father.” Why did I put myself in this problem? I should have stayed away from the beginning. I should have told myself not to get involved in her relationships, friendships, or life, but I did…and it hurt me in the end. What would my mother say? Probably some shit like, “Fight for her. If you really like her, Niall, fight for her.”

And that’s when I realize. I like Aubrey…and I mean a lot. I need to stop denying it because I am already in too deep. I have to tell her about it, but first, she had to know about Louis…and suddenly, I hear an engine rumble behind me.

Louis pulls into the driveway with Aubrey in the passenger seat. Well, here goes nothing..
