16. Chapter 16 (:

Aubrey’s P.O.V

“Niall, you shot my father!” I shout shoving him away from me. I turn my face from him and cross my arms. There is no way in hell I will ever forgive him. “You could have killed him.” My voice is low, but harsh in tone.

“I know, baby, but listen,” he begs turning me around, “I was in a hard place. I was on drugs, and I—”

“—never learned your damned lesson,” I finish. His eyes burn into mine, and once again, the shade of sapphire darkens into pools of indigo. “You knew the consequences of drugs, and you still do it.” I let out a breath and closed my eyes feeling utterly miserable. “You are pathetic.”

“Aubrey, I told you I do the drugs because of my mother!” he argues.

“Niall, listen to me,” I shout emphasizing every syllable, “no matter how many drugs you ingest, no matter how many people you hurt, and no matter how many people you love instead, it will never bring your mother back.” He bites his lip holding in the water under his eyes. His breathing is hard, and I urge to hold him until his disarming smile returns. Stop crying, I love you, I yearn to say, but instead, I push him away. I push him away because nothing will ever fix it. Nothing will ever fix the voids in both our hearts because he was missing his mother, and I was missing the happy father I used to have.

“What now, Aubrey?” he sobs. His face is red, and with his eyes drowned in water, he can hardly open them. “What do I do now?” Silence fills the room as I study the weak boy in front of me. I have never seen anyone more sorry.

“You go,” my voice croaks. I shrug swallowing the tears ready to fall. Niall returns my saddened eyes and remains motionless. After a long silence, he swallows a lump in his throat and turns to the door. I follow him down the stairs and ensure he leaves. When he opens the door, he bumps into another body, and I turn my eyes to see Daddy.

“Son, are you alright?” Daddy says when he sees Niall disoriented. He places his hands on Niall’s upper arms and studies his face. “What happened?”

“I told her,” Niall shrugs. His tears steadily fall, but I attempt to not care.

“Daddy, all this time,” I shout, “all this time, you knew and never told me!” His eyes shift to me to Niall to me. “The both of you are pathetic.” The word snakes off my tongue, and though I know it hurts, I believe it. Real men would have told me before I got hurt.

“Aubrey, I wanted to tell you,” Daddy presses, “I did, but who am I to butt in your relationship with Niall?” His voice is calm feigning normalcy as it always did.

“Daddy, he shot you!” I shout flailing my arms in anger. “What the hell do you not understand? I am honest to the both of you, and you lied to me! You lied to me and thought you could get away with it! Daddy, he shot you, and you told me absolutely—!”

“—what am I supposed to say, Aubrey?” Daddy bellows. His piercing eyes are burning through me. “I needed you to be happy, so I stayed quiet!”

“I would have been happier if you told me right away,” I argue. “Besides, for as long as I can remember, you never let me out to parties! You never let me out past midnight! You never let me do the things that made me happy! Why is my happiness of sudden importance to you now?”

“Because I’m sick, Aubrey!” he shouts. Niall raises his eyes to me worried. He still cares. After I pushed him away, he still loves me, and I see it in his eyes.

“Daddy,” my voice cracks, “what do you mean you’re sick?”

“They found the tumor today, Aubrey,” he pants through his tears. No, no, no, I mumble under my breath. My hand cups my mouth, and my knees weaken. I fall to the ground and bury my hands in my face. I hear Niall step toward me, but realizing I no longer have anything to do with him, stops from going further. “I’m sorry, Aubrey,” my father sobs, “it was hard for Niall and I to tell you. We wanted you to be happy.”

“Wait,” I grit through my teeth, “Niall…you knew?”

My eyes rise to his, and he opens his mouth to respond, but quickly shuts it. Not only did he lie about his arrest, but he also kept this from me. I hate him. I hate those emerald globes rimmed with tears. I hate those fingers running through his hair. I hate those perfectly gentle lips spilling lie after lie to me. “A-Aubrey, I wanted to tell you, but—”

“Go, Niall,” I say. My body is still, but my hands are shaking. My face is emotionless, and I feel numb. Every nerve stills, and I can hardly move from the floor. “Go, and never speak to me again.” I emphasize every word ensuring he gets it.

“Aubrey,” he begs, “you have to—”

“Did you hear me?” I hiss. “Go.”

And before I knew it…he was gone
