16. She's Back

Carter's P.O.V.

Waking up the next day, I felt refreshed. No bad dream. No sweat along my forehead. Nothing. It felt as though a weight was released off of my shoulders. September 27. Today's the day. A smile took over my face. Quickly, I jumped into my uniform and ran downstairs. To my suprise, I found Callum already dressed and ready to go to school. After shoving a pancake down my throat, I rushed to the bathroom to brush my teeth and wash my face. I didn't apply eyeliner, mascara or lipstick. Beauty is best when natural. I made my way towards the door.

"Took you long enough," said Callum waiting on the front porch.

"Shush it. The only reason you woke up earlier than me is because you were secretly studying for your chemistry test." I said putting on my shoes. "Face it, JML's study habits have rubbed off on you," I said grinning. Closing the door, I looked at the clock. It was already 7:40 am. Shoot! Were we going to catch the bus? Waiting across the street was Kevin. Feeling heat rising to my face, I tried to shake the feelings out by being reminded of Mr. Hayes' wrath. Looking at my watch, it was now 7:45.

"Come on! We're going to be late for school!" I said, grabbing Callum's arm and half dragging him across the street. Standing in front of Kevin, I also grabbed his arm and started speed-walking to the bus stop.

"Hey little bunny. What's the rush?" He asked smiling.

"Um, school. That's what," I tried to say in a matter-of-fact voice.

"Oh, I see. Little Carter has turned into a goody-two shoes. Now your scared to be late? What has JML done to you?" Kevin responded.

"I was never afraid to be late. I just don't want to be tardy is all," I said. We were only several feet from the bus stop.

"If you say so," he said. In one swift, fast motion, he twisted the hand I was holding leaving my hand placed inside of his. Feeling my face getting red, I looked up to him thinking I could find the reason off his face. Without looking back at me, all he did was smile.

"The bus is here! I'm running for it!" said Callum loosening his arm from my grip to run towards the bus. Walking slower, It was just me and Kevin. Even if I tried, I wouldn't be able to get my hand from his grip. But I didn't want to.

"I guess you don't mind being late for school today," he said grinning. Hand in hand, he took the lead. He's an older brother, I thought to myself, he's just like an older, protective brother. All thoughts left my mind. With my thumping heart, I followed.

Zelo's P.O.V.

When Damian, Chris, Lewis, Aiden Gabriel and I entered the classroom, we were suprised to see that we weren't the first ones to arrive. Sitting alone by the window was Alexandra. Lewis, standing beside me, started shifting his feet. After exchanging good mornings, we reached our seats.

"You're Alexandra, right? Carter's new friend?" said Gabriel with a shining smile. Looking first at Lewis and then at then at the rest of us, she responded.

"Yeah, you remembered?" she replied softly.

"Why would I forget?" he responded with genuine curiousity.

"Um, just asking," she said. Within seconds, she returned to her textbooks. Shrugging his shoulders, Gabriel turned around from his seat and opened his textbooks. As I've been doing for the past few days, I waited for Carter to arrive. Slowly but surely, students continued to enter the classroom bringing with them the noise from outside.

There was 10 minutes till school started, but Carter still wasn't here. Would she skip? No, she wouldn't want to get repremended by Mr. Hayes again. Looking out the door, I hoped she would make it on time.

"Hey, are you ok?" asked Aiden, nudging me with his elbow.

"Carter's not here yet," I whispered.

"Don't worry. She's probably with Kevin. I'm sure she's fine," he said with a smile after seeing my worried face. There was two minutes left of class. Where was she? Looking back at the door, I finally saw her. And like what Aiden said, she was with Kevin. Always with Kevin. Before entering the classroom, he ruffled the top of her head. Did he have to do that? It's not like she was a little girl. We're only one year younger than him. Smiling, she entered. She took her seat between the window and my desk.

"Good morning, Zeland! Mr. Hayes isn't here yeat, is he?" she asked.

"No, don't worry. What happened? Did you run all the way to school or something?" I asked after taking note of her pink red cheeks.

"Um, no, it's nothing," she responded bringing her hands to her cheeks. I could tell there was something going on with her. Did she have feelings for Kevin or something? Opening the door was Mr. Hayes. Behind him was the silhouette of another person.

"Hurry up class and take your seats. I said hurry up!" said Mr. Hayes to get the class in order. "Today we have with us another transfer student. She came all the way from Sydney, Australia." Beside me, I could see Carter break away from her daydream and look away from the window to the front of the class.

"Scarlett Evans," she said, a smile growing on her face.

"Come on in," Mr. Hayes said to the person outside. A girl with long, black hair entered wearing the same uniform as everyone else. Standing infront of everyone, we could get a better view of her. Thin lips with dark blue eyes added to her black hair. For a spit second, a fierce look showed in her eyes. The look vanished from her eyes and was replaced with a warm smile. To me, it didn't seem to reach her eyes.

"Hello everyone. My name is Scarlett Evans. I hope I can be good friends with everyone," she said, the smile turning into a grin.
