Letting Go

After being brutally abused by her father and outcasted by her classmates, seventeen year old Keller Alvidas is glad and even relieved to spend her last year at Edge-of-The-World, the sleepy small town she grew up in. Everything changes when the Gabriels, a group of orphaned teenage boys arrives. They break all her rules about meeting new people but they too have secrets and when the truth comes out Keller has to decide wether to let go and save herself or to continue to be dragged through everything she wanted to run away from, all for one chance she might never get.

8. Knowing You

Keller's P.O.V

My Converse drags across the stone floor of the kitchen as I see the other four guys huddled over a chocolate cake. I make my way over to the open fridge door to pull out an apple. The white tiled walls, wooden table, and low light would make a cute little domestic scene but I have no time to admire it as the scent of the cake wafts through the air making my mouth water.

"Look who James brought!" says Will smilingly. He must really love people. Ian, Al and Ed smile my way before returning to their food.

"I did not invite you here, to this food place of wonder so you can eat apples," James says with fake anger and he pulls the red apple out of my hand.

I frown, "But I like apples."

"Pears are better mate," says Al.

"Regardless if apples are better than pears or not, both will pale in comparison to this double layer chocolate cake!" James says cutting me a huge slice. Ed hands me a fork and the others stare at me waiting for my reaction. I stab the fork through the thick cake and place it gently in my mouth. The cake is moist and the icing is sweet and smooth and absolutley delightful. This is just what I need, I think and my stomach seems to agree as I groan. There are laughs all around at my reaction.

"What happened?" I ask with my mouth full of cake.

"Nothing, it's just that we saw you smile for the first time," says Ed.

"No, didn't I smile that time..." my voice trails off and I wonder if I ever smiled in front of them before.  "But I only met you guys now, so it doesn't count."

"Sure love," Ed says through his dimple, "Now eat your cake so you can get that scowl off your face, everyone looks nicer when they're not frowning." I happily continue munching through the slice.

"And besides," Ian says with a smile on his face, " Al and I saw you dance you dancing in the library remember? You smiled there."

"What?" says Will. "I have got to hear this," says Ed. Al starts laughing and James stays silent, thank God. It takes a long time for Ian to tell the story which is odd because the encounter was so short but nevertheless they boys got a good  laugh. It wasn't a teasing laugh like the ones I'm used to but more like the laughs that mean they're laughing with you and before long I am.

"I knew there was somethng I liked about you," laughs Ed.

"Yeah and that was her face," mutters James. Ed swats him over the head while I laugh.

"A smile and a laugh," says Al, "it must be our lucky day. And it wasn't just Ed who liked your face, it was James too." My face reddened at his compliments and the rest of them laugh.

"Speaking of your face, how'd you get that scar over there?" Ian asks. My face reddens and I frown some more.

"I'm not really comfortable talking about it, maybe when I know you guys better," I say before hiding my face with my hair. The sound of chairs scraping the ground fills my ears and I look around to find the five of them sitting down.

"What are you doing?" I ask.

"Getting you to know us better," says Will. My mind reels and I find myself in confusion. They wanted to know about me? And to make that happened they were willing to tell me, a total stanger, about themselves first. No one's ever done that for me before. Will's lightly acented voice cuts through my thoughts.

"I'm William but my friends call me Will. I like loud people," he says.

"I'm Albert but my friends call me Al. I like chicken," he says.

"I'm Edward but people mix me up with the vampire Edward and I hate that so my friends call me Ed. It reminds me of Ed Sheeran and he seems cool to hang out with," he says.

"I'm Ian and I wish I had curly hair," he says while flicking away one of Ed's curls.

"I'm James and like to sing along to Coldplay, particularly Viva La Vida," he announces.

"Is that enough?" Will says hopefully.

I sigh, "You guys aren't going to stop until I tell you are you?" I ask. They nod their heads enthusiastically.

"Well, then I have no choice do I?" I ask.

James smiles, "No, you don't."
