Letting Go

After being brutally abused by her father and outcasted by her classmates, seventeen year old Keller Alvidas is glad and even relieved to spend her last year at Edge-of-The-World, the sleepy small town she grew up in. Everything changes when the Gabriels, a group of orphaned teenage boys arrives. They break all her rules about meeting new people but they too have secrets and when the truth comes out Keller has to decide wether to let go and save herself or to continue to be dragged through everything she wanted to run away from, all for one chance she might never get.

7. First Meeting

Keller's P.O.V

I honestly feel like throwing up as my stomach lurches for the hundredth time tonight. I look up to see Al, with a worried expression on his face as he pats my back. I try scooting away but the world seems to spin again and I groan.

"It's okay, I'm not going to hurt you," he says softly. I can't seem to trust him just yet but I still keep his hand protectively on my back. The whole world is fuzzy and I reach for the glasses on my face only to find it not there.

"My,my glasses," I stutter. I start to get up but Al gently sets me back down and pulls my frames out of his jacket pocket.

"I figured these were yours," he says shyly as I slip them on. I finally see his face up close and I notice his long lashed eyes staring down at me with concern. I look away and see Josh and the others tied up with the same rope they attempted to tie me up with.

"You want to go interrogate them?"Al asks. Something inside me hardens and I get up without hesitation to interrogate the jerks who tried to take me away. Al runs up with me and we're suddenly beside the other four Gabriels.  Ed, I think his name was, pulled the rope out of Josh's mouth.

" Hey, what the heck man!" Josh says, "What did I ever do to you?" He tries wriggling out of the rope but it's no use.

"We want to know what you were planing on doing to this girl," Ed says with an authoritive voice.

"None of your business," he says without looking at either if us in the eye.

I take a step forwad so he can see my face, "It may not be his business but you were planning on taking me somewhere and that would be my business." He stays silent and Will, I think his name was, starts untying him.

"We'll let you go if you tell us where you were planning on taking our friend here," he says. I start to say 'don't let them go' but I stop myself and realize that I have five other guys to back me up.

"Fine man, we were going to leave you on the front steps of the school as a joke and stuff okay. Goodness, now can we go?" He stares at me with wild eyes.  Will unties all three of them and they run out into the night.

"What cads," screams Ian and I can only find myself in agreement. Ian nods towards me and thrusts his hand out. "I'm Ian," he says. I stare at his hand in bewilderment. It occurs to me that staring is rude only after a few moments later and I hesitantly shake his hand . Ian just laughs at my reaction and says, "I thought that since we just helped you beat the crap out of those guys that we could at least introduce ourselves." He points towards the others guys, "That's Will, Al, James, and Ed."

"I'm Keller," I say in a small voice.

"Keller," Will says putting his arm around my shoulders, "I think I'm going to like you Keller, any person who can hurt anyone like you did to those guys over there is a friend of mine. You see, we're  alike you and I." I find this hard to believe because he seems so harmless, like a cute little puppy.

"You shouldn't be worried, he says that to everyone but he's not really that frightening," says James who smiles at Will teasingly.

"Says you, you're about as frightening as a baby penguin," Will teases.

"Enough guys, don't you see the girl between you? She's almost been harassed for goodness sake! Do you really think she wants anyone touching her right now," Al says. He must've seen my reaction. Will drops his arm and I sigh with relief, I really needed my personal space.

"Where do you live?" asks Ed. I point towards the orphanage and they all smile in delight.

"You see Keller, I told you we were alike," Will says. We all walk into the orphanage and right when we were a going into our separate rooms my stomach rumbles, extremely loud. My cheeks flame red and I silently pray that they didn't hear. I really wish I had something to eat but it's 12:30 and  all the stores are closed already. I turn around and I practically see James' ears perk at the sound. Oh,please no, I think. He turns to his friends.

"Hey, do you guys want anything to eat? I haven't had anything all day," he says. I hear murmurs of agreement and mutterings of "let's head to the kitchen." Before I can fully escape to my room James walks back to me.

"Hey, you want to go eat something with us?" he asks rather loudly and then he whispers something soft, "I heard your stomach growl, so you can't say you're not hungry." I really was starving, I say to try convince myself to go with them, and they are really nice. But I really needed sleep and  didn't want to get into a awkward conversation or get in the way of private chats and stuff. My stomach growled again and twice as loud as last time. In the end hunger won out and I gave James a half-hearted smile and joined them in the kitchen.
