Afraid of Falling - Niall Horan Fanfiction

'Just keep running' I kept telling myself, ' just keep running and don't look back'. As I ran, I thought about the events of the last hour and felt my eyes begin to fill with small droplets of water before I ended up on the floor.

Tegan's POV:

I rinsed my glass out and set it down on the draining board before taking a seat next to Liam at the island. Louis and Eleanor were absorbed in their own little conversation, as we're Harry and Zayn, which left me Liam and Niall sitting silently in a line. With nothing to do, I decided to check my twitter, which I had been recently neglecting. I reached down into my pocket and only felt empty space; great, I must have left it in my room earlier. As I stood up from the table I felt a warm hand on my lower arm. Before I managed to turn round, Liam brought his lips close to my ear and whispered,

"Please trust him."

As quickly as he appeared, his lips were soon gone and I carried on walking to my room, my mind replaying what Liam had said.

I scanned my room and saw the phone lying on the bedside table. As I picked up my phone I sat down on the edge of my bed and opened twitter. Wow, I already had over 200k followers and a constant stream of mentions. Scrolling through them, I noticed the first few were compliments, and people saying how lucky I was to know the boys; but then I saw the others. The hate. I saw how malicious some of their 'fans' could be.

'You're such an ugly bitch. Can't understand how the boys like you.'

'Fat whore. Such an attention seeker. Slut'

As I felt the tears threatened to spill, over I closed twitter and quickly shoved my phone into my pocket. As I stood up, I heard a short, quiet knock against my door, making me jump. I wiped my eyes dry and turned round to face the doorway, a pit forming in my stomach as I recognized the face peering nervously into the room. Niall.

"Can I talk to you, Tegan?"

I didn't respond. "Please?" He begged.

I gave him a small nod, not looking at his face, fearing my own reactions if I did. My brain registered him walking over to the side of the bed I was stood next to, stopping himself a few feet away from me.

"Tegan, please let me explain what happened last night."

Again I paused apprehensively before giving him the short nod he was waiting for to carry on.

"Louise came over to me looking upset. She asked if she could talk to me, so naturally I said yes, but after we got outside her mood changed, and she just kissed me. Not the other way round."

Once again I could feel the little droplets of water returning to my eyes as my mind relived what I had seen.

"But you like her, don't worry about it. Go for it, ask her out." I tried to force a little smile from the corners of my mouth, trying to reassure him, but failing miserably. He sighed and shook his head.

"No, Tegan."

I managed to bring myself to look him in the eyes, his blue orbs displaying his mixed emotions. I continued to stare into his nervous eyes, searching for answers, not noticing him taking a step closer towards me, leaving only about a foot between us.

"I don't like Louise. I asked her to leave straight away after."

At the mention of her name, my eyes averted their gaze to the floor, my hair falling over my face, a single bead of water escaping my eye. I jumped slightly as I felt Niall's hand gently pull my chin up so our eyes met again, his displaying a hint of confidence beneath the anxiety, whilst the other hand brushed the strand of hair out of my face, tucking it behind my ear before cupping my cheek, carefully wiping away the stray tear with his soft thumb.

'I...I like you Tegan. I really like you."

"But, why?"

"You really have no idea, do you?" He smiled gently.

I gave him a questioning look, waiting for him to continue whilst his hand still lingered on my cheek.

"I have waited so long to find someone as funny, quirky and beautiful as you."

I flinched slightly when he said 'beautiful'.

"Tegan, you are beautiful, your perfect. If I could go back and change what happened, I would without hesitation." He emphasised 'are' as the words flowed past his lips, I could hear the emotion behind them, I could hear how much he meant what he said.

"Niall, I-I really like you too." I took a lot for me to release the words from my mouth, being afraid, never having felt this way about a person before, let alone admitting it to them, but that's all he needed to hear. I knew exactly what was coming as he closed the gap between us and tilted his head slightly, resting his other hand on my waist and shutting his eyelids just before his warm lips pressed carefully against mine, my whole body tingling, experiencing a feeling that was completely alien to me, but just felt so right. Our lips moved together gently before he pulled his away, only to pull me closer to him, resting his chin on my head as I laid my head on his warm chest listening to his steady heartbeat. We stood there for a while, enjoying each others warm embrace, before we were interrupted by a loud knock at the front door.

"Food!" He announced as he pulled away before kissing the top of my head and extending his hand towards me, which I gladly took, lacing my fingers between his.
