Ericka's Opus: The Journey of Discovering Myself

Ericka Madison Horan. The 15 year old daughter of Niall Horan and Olivia Horan (former Carsons/Clifton). Only child, plays soccer like her mom and writes music like her dad. When she was about 8, she's been working on composing one of the greatest opus of all time, and hasn't stopped since. Most would say that's something a prodigy would do, but it's her past time. But when something from the past comes up that could change her life, Ericka realizes that life is not just about the music, it's about the journey. (Third installment of Start of Something New trilogy)

4. Discovering myself

"Oh god, I am so sorry I got my coffee all over you!" Harry apologizes to me as I grab the towel the Jarret has brought down for me to dry myself off. "It's just...I never thought this day would come."

I look up from drying myself and my eyes widen. "What was it?"

Everyone was silent. Then Emma broke the silence. "Dinner is ready. I made chicken and rice. We can talk about it while we eat."

We walk into the dining room and take our seats. I grab a piece of chicken and a spoonful of rice. For the first few minutes, we ate in silence. Then it was Jarret who broke the silence. "What was it that you wanted to tell us about Ericka and her parents?"

I was just about to ask that. What was it? Did my mom have chlamydia? No, then I wouldn't be born. Was there something wrong with her that I didn't know of? Please tell me!

"Yeah." Harry answered. "I'll tell it. So 18 years ago, do I put it? Well, I was in a famous boyband."

I believe I forgot how to breathe and Jarret choked on a piece of chicken. "YOU WERE FAMOUS!?!?!?!" Me and Jarret yelled at the same time.

"Yes, Harry was famous. Me, I wasn't famous. I was a normal girl who was a typical fan of One Direction." Emma answers and takes a sip of water.

I swallow my rice and continue talking. "One direction?" I ask. "What's that?"

"It was the band I was in. When I was 16, I auditioned for this show called The X-Factor. I made it through. Then came this stage called bootcamp. I didn't make it through as a solo artist."

Jarret entered. "But then how did you become famous if you didn't make it through?"

Harry corrected him. "I said as a SOLO artist, Jarret. Back to the story. A few moments later, the judges decided to create two groups. A girl group and a boy group. And guess who was in the boy group with four other guys?"

"Larry King?" I ask.

"NO, silly! Me! And your dad. He auditioned too and made it. He too didn't make it through bootcamp as a soloist. That's technically how I met him. He still had his Irish accent then."

I knew my dad was from Ireland, but heck, I bet it was cool to hear his accent back then. "Then who else was in the band besides you and Ericka's dad?" Jarret asks with a mouth stuffed with chicken.

"Let's see. There was me, Ericka's dad, Niall Horan, and then there's Liam Payne, Zayn Malik, and Louis Tomlinson. My four best mates. The five of us made up the teenage British/Irish boy-band One Direction. That's how I spent the rest of my teenage years. Touring the world, award shows, tv interviews, paparazzi, and all the other schabang." Harry takes a sip of soda.

I look at Jarret, who was extrememly shocked. "I never knew our dads were that famous." I tell him.

"Me either." Jarret responds. "So my question: How did you guys meet and how did Ericka's mum and Niall meet?"

"I'll take this one." Emma answered. "So me and Olivia, Ericka's mum, were really great friends. We had three other friends, Rebecca Rutters, Gabby Walker, and Luna Schuster. Those are their names now, but back when I met Harry, they were Rebecca Gormley, Gabby Laboy, and Luna Knapper. And I was Emma Johnson then and Olivia was Olivia Carsons."

"I thought my mom's maiden name was Clifton?" I ask.

"Your mum was a foster child then, so were your aunt and uncle. So it all started the day Louis and his girlfriend, Eleanor, broke up. I told Becca who then told Olivia. She too was as shocked as the two of us. That day, she went for a run to clear her mind. Back then, she loved to do track and field. As she was running, she tripped over a wheel and fell. There was a man who was maneuvering a package, which just so happened to be Niall. Your mum had rocks stuck her knee when she fell. Two to be exact."

We finished eating and Emma continued the story. She told me of how mom met the rest of the band, and she had to have surgery to have the rocks out of her knee. Then she realized that Louis Tomlinson, one of the band dudes, was her old friend who she used to call Lewis because she lost her two front teeth. Then she started to date my dad. Around that time, my grandma, Annita, was diagnosed with cervical cancer, which she lost the battle to later on in the few weeks. Then mom started to date Louis behind dad's back.

Then on mom's 18th birthday, dad found out that she was dating Louis behind his back. He broke up with her and ran out of sight. Mom found him, then broke down on the streets. She didn't react in time but she was hit by a car that was driven by Rebecca's husband, Eli Rutters, and in shotgun was Gabby's husband, Kieth Walker. She had amnesia for a while, and then grandma deceased. Mom left the hospital, then the gang went to an annual fair in Canfield. Mom got her memory back when she heard lyrics from this old old song called "What Makes You Beautiful". She kissed Louis in front of dad, well, she was 18 then. After that, they haven't seen each other ever since. Then came three months later when mom ran into dad in Canfield and they started dating again.

"And this was planned, but Niall decided to propose to Olivia at our high school graduation, which he did." Emma continued. "And of course, she said yes."

"So the reason Harry spit coffee all over me was so that I can hear the story of how my parents got together?" I asked sitting on the carpet of the living room.

"No no no no." Harry answered. "That's not why. Well, the reason was because of what happened a year and a half later, a week before your parents' wedding."

"What happened?"

"Well, Olivia and Niall...did you ever hear about the birds and the bees?" Emma asks.

"Heard it a long time ago." I answer.

"Okay. Well, they slept with each other. The most disturbing birthday present Harry gave your mum on her 18th birthday wasn't used."

I look at Harry. "And that present was?"

"Protection." He answered with a smirk on his face. "So that's shenanigan happened. The next day, you mum went partying and got pretty drunk."

"I can imagine that."

"Well, she went home with another guy...and well...she slept with him too. Same thing. No protection. No nothing."

"Did she know who it was?"

The two adults nodded. "She told me that day. I was pretty shocked. Then, I was pregnant with Jarret. Eight months."

"So who was the guy? Please tell me!!"

The two were completely silent, and then Harry said the shocking answer of my life. "It was Louis. Louis Tomlinson."

A week before my parents got married. I was born May 15, 2015. My parents got married in September. So that all happened at the end of August and I was conceived in...the end of August.

That was the same week.

Oh god.

Tears filled my eyes. "So are you saying dad might not be my real dad? That I may be the child of a different guy? That we have no idea who my real dad is?"

They nod.

"So my dad could possibly be...Louis? And not Niall? That this whole time, my dad hasn't been my biological dad and my real biological dad doesn't know that I'm his child? That this is all a lie I've been living under?!"

"Ericka, we're..."

I jolt straight up from the floor, run over and grab my sandals, and run out of the house and straight home. I was crying the whole way.

Who's the dad I'm living with now? He feels like a stranger. But is he really my real dad?
