Stole My Heart

Leah's dreams were coming true. She's made it onto the X-Factor, and she was going places. The last thing she imagined would happen was that Niall Horan from One Direction would ask her out. Suddenly, her life is turned upside down as love, heartbreak, ex-boyfriends, distance, and complications stress their relationship to the max. Can they overcome everything?

16. Revelation

We flew apart so quickly I fell of the bed and hit the floor. My back slammed against the floor with a loud thud and I stared in terror at Niall’s mom. She looked furious. Maybe even more than furious. She looked like she could kill me at that very moment.

She took a deep breath and gathered herself, looking towards the ground. “Dinner will be ready in a few minutes. I’d suggest coming down stairs.” With one last glare in my direction, she turned on her heel and stormed out, slamming the door on her way. I rolled over and put my head in my hands, beyond embarrassed. I felt Niall’s arms come around me and I had to fight tears.

“Niall, why does she hate me so much..?” I asked, looking up at him.

He sighed and shook his head, looking completely lost and hopeless. “I wish I knew…she’s never done this before, ever. I don’t have a clue why she is now.” He stared longingly at the door, like if he looked at it long enough, she’d come back with a smile and kinder words, but that wasn’t going to happen. “Come on, let’s go.” He sighed, getting to his feet. He reached for my hand and I reluctantly took it and let him pull me up. The second I was on my feet, his arms were around me and he just stood there, holding me. He buried his face in my neck and inhaled deeply, then kissed my neck softly, sending my heart racing. He pulled away and smiled solemnly down at me and then led me from the room holding my hand.

Dinner was painfully awkward. The only person trying to make conversation was Greg, who was completely oblivious to the animosity coming off of his mother. He was constantly joking around with the entire table. Niall was talking, but you could tell he felt uncomfortable.

Finally, the meal ended and Niall and I went back to his room.

When we got there, I closed the door and turned to face him. “Why doesn’t she like me? I got the evil eye all night, why is she acting like this?" I sighed, exasperated and raked my hands through my hair, yanking it behind me and away from my face.

Niall sighed and crossed the room to me, pulling me into his arms. “I don’t know, but we’ll figure it out and fix it. Now stop stressing out, babe." He kissed my head softly and pulled me towards the bed. I let him lead me and pull me down onto the bed. I fell asleep relaxing in his arms.

The next morning I awoke to an empty bed. I got up and threw my hair into a pony tail and changed my clothes, then went downstairs. I heard laughter coming from the kitchen so I knew exactly where to find everyone.

I walked in and saw everyone at the table, laughing and having a good time. When Maura saw me, however, her stone expression was immediately back and she refused to meet my eyes. Niall noticed the shift in mood and turned around. His eyes lit up and I walked over to him. His arm slipped around my waist and pulled me against him. I giggled and ran my hand through his hair.

Greg cleared his throat, gaining our attention. “Leah, would you mind if I stole my brother for the day?" He asked me hopefully, giving me a full on puppy dog look.

Niall and I laughed. “Of course, he’s your brother after all." I grinned back at him as his face lit up.

"Maybe you could spend the day with mom, shopping or something?" Niall looked at me hopefully and my face fell. I looked at Maura, who was looking aghast at Niall. He looked over at her and shot her a look that told her to give it a shot.

Maura made a noise and rose from the table. “Fine. Get ready and we’ll leave in an hour." And she stalked from the room.

I groaned loudly and buried my head in Niall’s hair. Greg tsk’d and sighed. “You’re right, mate. She is acting strange." He looked at me and smiled. “She really is a sweet woman. Let her see what kind of a girl you really are and I’m sure she’ll warm up."

I smiled at him as he stood up and came over, giving me a quick hug, and slipped out of the room. I sighed and slipped my hands onto Niall’s shoulders and he pulled me closer. I leaned down and kissed his head and he smiled at me. “Promise you’ll try? For me?"

I gave him an annoyed look. “I am trying, Niall, she just doesn’t like me.."

He sighed. “I know, I know. I’m just hoping this works. Good luck, babe."

About an hour I was sitting in the car with Maura and it was dead silent. Almost painfully so. You could feel the tension in the air, and it was suffocating. I sat as far over in my seat as I could and stared out the window at the passing scenery. Every so often I felt her eyes flash over and glare at me and it made me squirm.

We pulled into a little shopping center and Maura jumped out of the car, not even bothering to see if I was following. I quickly ran to catch up, barely slipping into the store she entered before the door closed.

I huffed in frustration as she practically ran away from me. I wasn’t as upset anymore that she didn’t like me, I was just mad. Who was she to judge me anyway?

I kept my cool and shopped around a bit until she came to me and told me we were leaving. I followed her out of the store and into the car. In the car, she kept giving me dirty looks, and I finally cracked.

"Look, I don’t know why you feel the need to give me dirty looks, I didn’t do anything to you." I practically snarled, glaring.

I received one of the dirtiest looks yet, and if looks could kill, I’d be dead. “What makes you think you can talk to me like that?!"

I turned in my seat and looked her straight in the eye, letting all of my anger flow. “Ever since we got here, you’ve been nothing but rude to me! I haven’t said one mean thing to you and you’ve been treating me like dirty under your shoe, and I want to know why!" I snapped, refusing to back down.

She continued to stare me down. “He’s too good for you. Anyone he chooses over his family to see isn’t worth it. I missed out on seeing my son for the last month because he was off gallivanting with you." Her eyes welled with tears, and they spilled over, flowing down her cheeks.

Realization dawned on me and I lept forward and pulled her into a hug. She fought me for a few seconds, but quickly gave in, hugging me back.

"I’m sorry, I had no idea…I didn’t even know he was going to show up at my house, if I had.."

Maura wiped her eyes and shook her head. “I’m being so stupid. I just hated the thought of my baby being off with someone else when I though he should be home.." She sighed and finished rubbing the tears off her cheeks.

I couldn’t believe that was all it was. Just jealousy. Of me. That was different. I leaned forward and hugged her again. “I would never dream of taking Niall away from you. I love him, yes. But he loves you guys, and I would never keep him from you guys."

The rest of the day went surprisingly well. Maura’s mood towards me immediately changed, and the rest of the day was full of shopping and laughs. Toward the end of the day, we were in our last store for the day when I found the most beautiful dress. It was deep red and it came up to just above me knees at the front, but flowed to my ankles at the back, and it was strapless.

Maura caught me admiring it and came over to me. “You can get it is you want. I’ll pay." She smiled encouragingly at me, and I felt my face light up. I quickly ran to the dressing room to try it on. It fit like a glove and hugged my body everywhere it was supposed to. The soft fabric fell over me like a waterfall and it moved with me as I walked around. It was perfect.

I took the dress out to Maura, beaming, who took it from me and went to the check out. I was grinning from ear to ear the entire ride home.

Later that night at dinner, everyone was laughing and having a good time, even Maura and I. Niall kept glancing at me, giving me questioning looks. I just shrugged him off and continued to eat my food.

After dinner, Niall and I decided to head back to his house. We didn’t want to stay there since there were two of us and we didn’t want to be in the way. We did promise to come back before we left again, though.

As soon as we left the building, Niall pulled me in for a huge hug and kissed me forcefully on the lips. “I don’t know what you did, but you’re fantastic."

He beamed down at me and I gave him a smug look. “I told you everything would be fine." and winked at him. He chuckled and threw his arm over my shoulders, leading me to the car.
