Kiss and Tell

Emily just thought she was going to your average One Direction concert.
Emily just thought wrong.

Emily's 18, and when she and her best friend Jenny turn up to a 1D concert to find it's cancelled, they aren't pleased. All too fast, they're sharing a hotel with the boys, and Jenny's changed. Drastically. They discover parites, clubs, drugs and fame. Jenny's going off the rails, hitting headlines for the wrong reasons, though she's not the only one making mistakes. Emily gets pregnant, oblivious to who the father is. Let's just remember not all stories have a happy ending, and where there's love, there's drugs, and where there's drugs, there's guns..

31. The Best Friend For Life And Beyond

“This is so you,” Jenny drawls, tossing a flirty coral dress my way.

I add it to the Eiffel-tower-sized pile of clothing I’ve got going in my basket.

“And this,” She says, pulling a barely-past-the-bum playsuit up to her reflection in the mirror, “is sooo me.”

This should be paradise for me. The old Emily would have loved it. So much. But the new Emily just wants to get away. But why?

“OH. EM. GEE.”

Turns out Jenny’s just spotted the prom dresses.

Why is it that the hairs on the back of my neck are on ends, that my heart is thudding and I just can’t relax? What is so unsettling about going shopping?

“That’s beautiful, Jen,” I smile as she pulls out a turquoise dress. “You should try it on.”
It’s enough to convince her, and to be honest, even without my word she would have done it anyway.

“You’re right. Have you got everything? Let’s go to the changing rooms. I. Am. In Heaven.”

Jenny was right about the dress suiting me. I almost look as pretty as she looks on a bad day in this dress. I twirl, and the bottom layers float outwards. The floral patterned dress barely makes it halfway down my thighs, showing off my almost-perfectly-toned legs, thanks to Zed. It’s great having a stylist. In fact, he would be proud of this choice. Well, to be fair, I didn’t choose it. Jen did. But he doesn’t have to know that. Okay. Now’s the time. I take a deep breath, and reach for the price tag. Brace yourself, Emily.

I almost die of relief. It’s in the sale. Fifty pounds. Half price. I can afford it! And it actually suits me! I should win a gold medal or something of the sort.

“Emily? You almost done?” Jenny calls over the changing room door.

“Yep!” I reply, buzzing. “I’m done!”
After paying, we hit a big grassy park which looks so out of place in the city landscape. But it’s a relief, getting proper air around here. It’s like being back home, sort of.

“You seem different,” I finally say, leaning back on my arms, the sky stretching over our heads. Jenny cocks her head.

“Yeah,” I press on. “In a good way though. Like the old Jenny. The Jenny I know and love.”

A smile plays on her lips. “What about the other Jenny? Do you love her?”

“Not so much.”

She flicks my bare shoulder and I nudge her back. She starts laughing, the way she used to, the way she’d laugh and not stop, getting in a hysteric fit about the dumbest of things. But it always set me off too, and right now, it was doing that job pretty well. We probably look like right idiots, laughing and rolling around on the grassy ground of England at this age, but I don’t care. I am so glad to have Jenny back. I don’t want to lose her to fame again. And what’s more? All feeling of uneasiness is gone. In fact, I feel relieved to be alone with Jen, away from the guys. I’ve only just realised it. I’m homesick. Jenny makes me feel at home. I want dad back, and I want mum to still be here. But she’s not, and dad’s got a flat now. And I’m a big girl, on my own. No. Not on my own. With Jenny. That’s so much better than being alone.

“Hey.” Jen’s voice breaks through my thoughts.

“Yeah?” I look at her, still smiling.

“Best friends forever? Best friends for life?” She looks at me hopefully, but doesn’t need an answer.
