How to Save A Life..

The Fault In Our Stars Competition Entry!

When Zach and Tara met, it was magic.
They've been dating for 4 years now, and they're both 17.
But Tara has cancer. And she's been told she probably won't live for much longer. They live hours away, and Zach is in care, but he leaves his carehome to live homeless on the streets in Dover, 4 hours away from his hometown, just to be with Tara for her last year. A touching story of love, loss, and death.

Based on the song "How To Save A Life" by The Fray.

6. Tara

This isn't right. This is a mistake. I force away tears, and stare at Tara's pale body, curled up beneath the crumpled thin hospital blankets. There is a mask covering her nose and mouth helping her breath, and her chest heaves as she breaths. What used to be long, auburn hair is now nothingness. Where's it all gone? What has she ever done to deserve this?! I can't help it. I break down in tears and cry so hard it hurts. A thick hand gently pats my shoulder.

"She's gonna be alright," Seth says, and I slip back to reality. A short nurse hurries towards us.

"Who are you? Are you supposed to be here?" She says, her words rushed.

"I'm Zach, this is Seth. We were told we're allowed..." I say, and her blue eyes fix on me. Suddenly, a croaky voice emerges from my right.

My head flicks round to Tara's bed, and she's sitting upright now, fiddling to remove the mask.

"Ohmygod Tara!" I grip her hands and press my forehead to hers, and her misty eyes meet mine.

"Hey," Seth grins, perched on a plastic chair. "I'm Seth."

She looks at him, and back at me.

"Zach, I would kiss you so hard right now, but I'm not allowed," She whispers.

"Gee," I say, "That sucks." I dig my hand into my denim pockets.

"And by the way," she says, the corner of her mouth lazily curling up into a lopsided smirk, "you're an idiot."

"I know."
"You should go back home."

"I am home."

"This is a hospital, Zach."
"Home is where the heart is. And you're where my heart is, Tara."

"I mean it," she says through gritting teeth. "Where will you sleep tonight?"

I open my mouth to speak, but I close it again. "Zach," She repeats, "where will you sleep tonight?"

I look into her eyes, ashamed. "I don't know."
"How much money do you have?"

I retrieve a crumpled five-pound note from my pocket.

"Shit," she says. "I'm calling my dad. He'll take you back home."

"No!" I say. "There's no way I'm going back to care, Tara, and if you da-"

"You can come stay with me."

I turn my head to Seth and raise my eyebrows.

"What?" I say, not quite believing him.

"I said, you can come stay with me," He repeats. And I hug him. Properly. Like you hug a friend.

We're forced to leave after an hour because Tara is struggling to breath. I don't protest, because I really don't want her to die. I blow her a kiss goodbye, and leave with Seth to his car, a Jeep. We drive in silence most the way, but he finally speaks up.

"Damn, you're girlfriend's hot," he says.

"I know," I reply, and stare out the window at the road slipping past.
