Average girl

Amelia is an average girl. Average knowledge, average looks. But yet, she doesn't have many friends. She is sweet and caring and absolutely adores everybody. She tries her best not to judge the people she meets, and that is what got her in this situation. When a new student starts at the start of the school year, she is quick to jump head in on trying to make the person feel comfortable. Yet what happens when this new student is the bad boy Blake Harris? Does the magic sparkle or will they even be friends?

8. The beach

If you would just slow down, you would see

We were meant for something
Lay your armor down and stay with me
Aren't you tired of running?

Amelia's point of view:

I sighed deeply. The sea breeze hit my face and traveled through my core. I always felt more connected with him out here. Nothing between us but the sound of waves. I got out my photograph and felt the tears pressing, blurring my vision. I sat down close to the water and wrapped my arms around my legs, looking up into the sky.
"I don't know what to do Percy. It's been 2 years now, but I still feel you so close. The pain is still so fresh in my body, and it doesn't show sign of stopping. Maybe it's just a twin thing." I smiled through the tears. "Remember when we used to tease mom about that? Claiming that we could read each other’s minds. I think sometimes she believed it, even though she refused. But we made a pretty convincing case, agreeing beforehand what we would say." I shivered in the cold.
"We spend so many hours down here. Hiding in the dunes, playing around in the water. This was our favorite place. It's still mine. But it's not the same without you. It's so... quiet."

"Blake told me today that I was afraid of living. I think he's right. I haven't really lived since you. Something felt broken. But at that party, you know the one with the beer pong - tournament I told you about, I actually felt something. I can't describe it, really. I just felt this spark, like something was starting inside me."

"Go play Pea" It was a whisper but I heard it. I turned around swiftly, drying my tears in the sleeve of my hoodie. And there he was. Standing there, very still and looking into the ground, clearly uncomfortable.
"Blake?" I whispered. He came closer and sat down next to me.
"Hi Aly." He stared straight ahead into the waves. I shifted my position so I once again faced the water.
"How much did you hear?" I said quietly.

"Who was he?" He looked down onto the picture. In the picture, was a smiling dark blond haired boy with pale green eyes. I allowed myself to breathe out some of the air I had been keeping in since he sat down.
"He's Percy, my twin brother. I mean... He was."
"How long ago?"
"Two years today." He raised his hand to his face and ran it across his neck.
"I'm so sorry. I shouldn't have said any of that. I regret all of it."
"It's okay, I regret it too. I'm sure you have your reason. I'm just always a bit more sensitive on this day."
"That's okay. I do have a reason; her name is Penny. She's my baby sister. Let’s just say my family is kind of complicated" We sat in silence for a bit.
"My dad died 4 years ago, he took an overdose on accident after beating the shit out of me and my mother." I looked over at him. He was drawing circles in the sand with his fingers, staring into the sand.
"I'm sorry."
"I'm not. He was a horrible person." I stared straight ahead again.
"Banana!" A small girl with dark blond hair and brown eyes jumped over to him and laid down in the sand, her head in his lap.
"Tell me another story about dad" He looked at me, looking guilty at first and then shooting me a short smile.
"Have I ever told you how he met mom?"
"No. Tell me! Tell me!"
"Okay, okay. He was the new kid, just started out at a new school. On his first day of school, he had to have someone guide him around. And when he got out of the principal’s office, he saw this girl. It was mom. He thought to himself: 'What a beautiful girl.' She wasn't beautiful in the normal way, from across a room you wouldn't really notice her, but right there in that moment. He felt a spark. She had this thing about her. He couldn't really put his finger on it. But there was just something about her, and he couldn't shake the feeling that she was special. But dad was stubborn. So he brushed it off and went about his day. But then this one time, they were playing a game. And they got so close to each other that their faces were almost touching. And he felt it again, the spark you know." He looked up into the sky.
"And then he swallowed his pride and kissed her. And they fell in love. And even now, even though he is gone. He is still here. Every night looking down on her and us from that star right there" He pointed up and Penny followed his hand.
"Hi dad." She whispered. "I like that story." She seemed to doze off, falling deeper and deeper into slumber.
"Was that true? Did they really meet like that? Like we did?" I asked quietly, trying not to wake up Penny.
"No, in reality they met back when mom was doing drugs too. They hooked up a couple of times high on shit and she got pregnant with me, so they just decided, why not just be together then."

"I'm sorry."
"I just want to protect her. She doesn't deserve this. When I got home today, she hadn't been feed all day and hadn't been to school because my mother went on a bender. That's why we are here actually. She drove home, almost passed out, puked on me and proceeded to go into bed. So I asked Penny to take a walk with me, at least until she's asleep." He gazed down, stroking her cheek gently.
"I can't even begin to try to understand how that feels." I shivered just by the thought.
"You know what? Why don't you crash at my place? We have a couple of guest rooms you can stay in."
"What about your parents?" He asked and looked at me.
"They aren't home. Business trip. For the next three weeks. So you can stay until then and then we can figure something out." I looked right into his dark brown eyes.

"No... I don't need your help. I've made it this far without you" He looked back down into the ground.
"I didn't say that. I just offered help so you didn't have to do it alone." He got up and picked Penny up.
"Come on Pea, time to go home." With that he left. Not long after I started the short walk home.
