Do We Really Need Homework?

Home work has been around since the beginning of modern schooling. Some homework is harder than others and some is just to plain much to give as homework! Whilst most students hate homework, teachers still seem to give it to us, why? My thoughts are ´do we really need homework?´  I mean, all it ever does is stress out students during their free time and even though in some schools there are rules saying teachers can´t give homework over the weekend, they still do! It is my belief that homework is irrelevant and does not help the learning process in anyway.

One reason that homework is unnecessary is because in most cases it does more harm than good, however “homework continues to be assigned – in ever greater quantities – despite the absence of evidence that it’s necessary or even helpful.” (Alfie Kohn) Also, there is no evidence that homework affects grades for the better, in fact, “the only effect that does show up is more negative attitudes on the part of students who get more assignments.” (Alfie Kohn) As well as this, “decades of investigation have failed to turn up any evidence that homework is beneficial for students.” (Alfie Kohn) While the idea of homework is to increase the knowledge, and therefore, the grades of the student, there is no evidence that homework actually has the effect that teacher´s desire.

Since Homework has no apparent help to students, Homework is evidently unnecessary and irrelevant. This it is why it is my belief -and I believe it to be the wish of all other students too- that homework should be removed from the school program. However, if future studies do show that homework is helpful then we should have it but until that time, I remain strongly opposed to the idea of homework.
