Chapter Three

The city was waking up now; Mobians of all ages were beginning another day without knowing whether Eggman or some other evildoer would attack during its course. Kay walked slowly and silently along the road nearest the artificial forest, her eyes trained on the dirt beneath her feet. She had come to see the city one more time before she left for Station Square, but her mind was so busy she was unable to focus on anything clearly. Instead she simply walked without a care in the world as to where she was going.

This is crazy, she thought. I can see everything that’s happening all over Mobius all at once, and I can’t stop it! Doesn’t the Emerald have an off button? Apparently it didn’t, for no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t block the images that plagued her now all-knowing mentality.

Then all of a sudden a new picture appeared – the lone figure of Espio flashed into her mind briefly. In that split second she saw him walking through a different part of the city, his golden eyes pondering. Kay glanced up to see where she was in relation to him and quickly figured that if she took the next path leading left she would intercept him within the next few minutes.

Good. She turned and began walking deeper into the beautiful metropolis. Maybe talking to him will help all of these other things go away. She continued on in silence, trying to block out every new image that popped into her head to no avail.

Finally she looked up and saw Espio just a few paces away. He’d seen her as well, and he stopped with a smile and said, “Fancy meeting you here.” Kay’s mind still wouldn’t give her a break. She was too overwhelmed with new information to answer right away, and after a few moments of silence she heard his voice again, this time asking, “Are you all right?”

Go away! she screamed in her head, and just like that everything was blank except for what was happening right now before her. She gave Espio a weak smile. “Fine. Just taking in the city before I leave, I guess.” Yeah, right. That’s what I was trying to do.

“Same here,” Espio replied, taking a glance around. “Vector said that as soon as I get you safely to Station Square we are going to go looking for Mighty and Ray.”

Kay quickly remembered the story behind the two characters: they had gone off in search of Mighty’s long-thought-dead sister and had stopped sending letters recently. That was the least of her worries, however. Kay cringed when she heard Vector’s name, painfully recalling their conversation a few hours before.

Espio noticed her wince and frowned, tilting his head to the side in an attempt to meet her eyes. “Kay,” he said gently, “what happened between you two?”

Suddenly Kay was faced with a new dilemma. She wanted so badly to tell Espio about everything – the relentless visions, her conversation with Naugus, her misunderstanding with Vector. But at the same time she was worried that Espio would only start acting weird again. To tell or not to tell? That, apparently, was the question. “I…I’m afraid that if I tell you you’ll take it the wrong way like he did.”

“Take what the wrong way?” Espio asked. When she didn’t answer him after a long pause, he came closer to her and gently took her hand, leading her to a nearby bench overlooking the Chao Garden. Once they were seated he removed his hand from hers, much to Kay’s relief, and waited patiently for her to respond. Kay still struggled with herself for a while. She wanted to tell him, but how would he react? Hopefully the same thought that had crossed Vector’s mind hadn’t crossed Espio’s. Was it worth the risk? She had to tell someone something – anything that would help ease her aching head.

“Espio, when you found me with N-Geoffrey,” Kay quickly corrected herself, “what did you think?”

The chameleon looked at her in confusion. “What did I think about what?”

“About finding me with him.”

“Well…” he still seemed a bit off-guard. “I observed the situation and wondered if he had brought and kept you there against your will.”

He didn’t say anything more than that. Kay looked at him. “Really? That’s it? You didn’t think anything else?”

Espio seemed really confused now. “Was I supposed to?”

Kay wanted to laugh out loud as she breathed a long sigh of relief. “No.” Espio watched her silently for a while, taking in her every movement – the way her eyes couldn’t seem to stay focused on anything, the way she kept wringing her hands every now and then.

“Let me guess,” he said. “Vector thought you were working for Geoffrey.”

“Worse,” Kay replied. “He thought we were dating.”

Espio’s mouth dropped open, and again Kay wanted to laugh at the out-of-character reaction. The perplexed chameleon couldn’t seem to keep his thoughts straight anymore, either. “He thought you were…? With Geoffrey St. John?” Espio leaned back on the bench with a thud, staring at the lake before them. “I’ve seen Vector react to some crazy things, but this…” He shook his head. “I have no words.”

Kay tore her eyes from him and instead found sudden interest in the grass at the rim of the lake. “I’m afraid he won’t talk to me after this.”

Her words surprised him. Espio turned his head to look at her worried expression and said, “He’ll come around. He always does. I mean, look at how quickly he accepted me back.”

“That was different,” she told him. “He’s known you for years. He’s only known me for a couple of weeks.”

Espio considered this. “True, but Vector does stuff like this all the time. He’ll like a girl, assume she likes him back, and when he finds out she doesn’t he’ll seclude himself for a while. He always comes out of it at some point.”

Poor Vector, Kay thought. She recalled her hopeless romantic life as a human girl and frowned, pushing the thought away before it could take root. That was the last thing she needed right now.

Espio noticed her internal dilemma and couldn’t help but smirk. This girl had so many problems she could rival a math book. He cocked his head at her. “Now what?”

“I’ve never…” Kay trailed off, shook her head, and finished with, “Never mind.”

“Kay?” Espio persisted, nudging her softly. She looked up at him for a moment before averting her eyes once more.

“I’ve never had a guy like me before,” she mumbled somewhat awkwardly.

Espio stared at her. “Seriously? How could anyone not like you? You’re…” He trailed off here, the rest of his sentence fading away in his mind as her blue eyes gazed up at him. For a moment he found himself lost in the deep cerulean orbs. Then he finished his previous thoughts with: “…an amazing person.”

Kay turned her head away, feeling the blood rushing to her cheeks. Why was she suddenly so popular with Mobian guys? Could her life get any crazier? So much for the chameleon returning to normal. Still, she appreciated the comment, so she quietly replied, “Thanks, Espio.”

“Uh…d-don’t mention it.” He sounded just as startled about the whole situation as she felt. A few moments later he cleared his throat and said, “Well…we’d better get ready to head out.”

Kay was still lost in thought when she nodded. “Yeah.” Then she stood up quickly before Espio could offer his hand and make the circumstances even more abnormal. He shook his head, seeming to clear his mind, and then began walking back the way Kay had come, towards the nearest city exit. Kay followed him silently, her mind doubling up on thoughts and visions as they walked.

One of those images was that of a pretty brown lynx, who stood behind one of the trees that the duo walked past. It was Nicole, and she had heard every bit of the conversation.
