Chapter Six

“You’re it, aren’t you?” Shadow muttered, catching Kay by off-guard. She blinked.

“You’re the one who wants us to train you.” His voice was deep and dark. It took Kay a moment to realize she wasn’t dreaming.

“Well…” she glanced over at Espio, still slightly amazed that she was really here in the G.U.N. headquarters. Espio nodded once in encouragement. Kay turned back to Shadow’s gaze and finished with, “Yeah.”

Shadow’s blood-red eyes observed her, taking in every detail. After a long pause he frowned and asked, “How old are you?”

“Sixteen,” Kay replied.

Shadow scoffed, crossed his arms, and turned to the side. Rouge poked his arm.

“Now, Shadow, don’t be mean. We don’t know her yet,” she said. He scoffed again and didn’t reply. Rouge sighed and shook her head before walking up to Kay. Agent Oliver still stood at attention beside Espio, but at a word from Rouge he was gone, and the room was human free. Rouge looked at the newcomer. “What’s your name?”

“Why do you want us to train you, Kay?”

“Well…I…” Kay began again, once more looking to Espio for support. He nodded again, indicating for her to tell them the truth about why she was there. Kay took a deep breath. “I’m the Emerald’s Chosen.”

Shadow’s head whirled around to stare at her, but Rouge only frowned in confusion.

“The Emerald’s what?” she asked.

“Emerald’s Chosen.”

“What does that mean?”

Kay shifted her weight from one foot to the other. “I’m apparently supposed to save Mobius from some…thing…” She shrugged. “I’m still learning about it.”

Rouge raised an eyebrow, obviously not buying it. “I see.”

“Stand aside, Rouge,” Shadow demanded, striding over to where the three of them stood. Rouge did as she was told and allowed the dark hedgehog to take her place before Kay. Kay couldn’t believe how close they were now. She had to lift her eyes to see his face; he stood about half a foot taller than her. Again she felt his criticizing gaze on her as he took in her features a second time. Finally he wrinkled his nose in disbelief. “You’re the Emerald’s Chosen?”

Kay recalled the incident from just last night and tried to make herself sound certain as she replied, “Yes.”

At this point Shadow finally shifted his eyes so that he was looking directly into hers. As they stood there regarding each other, Kay felt another wave of knowledge flood her mind – everything from Shadow’s life on the ARK to how he had come to work for G.U.N. to his presence before her at this very moment. During this wave, however, something changed in Shadow’s features. His eyes widened and he took a step away from her, still staring in disbelief. He darted his focus over to Espio, who folded his arms behind him and nodded calmly once again. Shadow then turned to his left and stared at Rouge, who only looked up at him with a hint of concern in her eyes.

Sonic’s dark twin frowned angrily and looked back at Kay with a fierce gaze as he growled, “It will take more than changing your eye color to convince me, girl.” With that, he shoved past her and disappeared into the maze of G.U.N.’s headquarters.

Kay looked at Espio a third time, completely bewildered by what had just happened. “Changing my eye color?” she asked.

Espio didn’t answer right away, but after a brief pause he replied gently, “Ever since your encounter with the Master Emerald last night, your eyes have briefly turned green each time you’ve made eye contact with someone new.”

That’s why they were all acting weird when I came down from the Emerald, Kay realized, and why Shadow was surprised just now. She began to look at Rouge but stopped herself just in time.

“Go ahead,” Rouge encouraged, taking a step closer. “I want to see this.”

Kay made eye contact with Rouge, and just as yet another wave rushed over her, the female bat gasped aloud and stared at her in wonder.

“Incredible,” Rouge whispered. Kay lowered her gaze. Things just keep getting crazier, she thought to herself. A moment later Rouge let out a breath and continued, “Well, it appears that you are no ordinary Mobian. I suppose I should show you where you’ll be staying.”

Kay lifted her head in surprise. “You mean you’ll train me?”

“Sure thing, hon.” Rouge gave her a half-smile. “You’re the Emerald’s Chosen, aren’t you?”

You have no idea what that means. “Yeah.”

“This way, then.” That being settled, Rouge stepped around Kay and Espio and began to walk down the hallway. Espio silently touched her hand to let her know they needed to move, and so the three of them made their way through the identical passageways of the massive HQ. How can anyone find their way around in this place? Kay wondered as they walked on in silence. Finally, after a few minutes of nothing but shoes tapping the floor, Rouge took a left into a small room with Kay and Espio close behind.

“Here we are,” she said, gesturing to the room with a gloved hand. “It’s not much, but around here we don’t have time for luxury.”

This reminded Kay somewhat of Eggman’s space station when she had first started this adventure two weeks before. It was small, square, and simple. The walls were grey concrete with one bed and one window. Kay headed for the only source of light and realized that she had an amazing view of the city below. She was still trying to figure out just how far she could see when Rouge spoke again.

“Welcome to the big leagues, kid. I’ll let you two say goodbye. Meanwhile, I need to talk to a certain partner of mine.” Rouge offered a small wave before disappearing again, leaving Espio and Kay alone in the confined space.

Neither of them spoke for a long time. Kay didn’t want to have to say goodbye to the only person she’d really gotten to know here on Mobius, but if she was to become the warrior she needed to be, she was going to have to. Espio waited patiently for her to speak first. When she did, her voice was so quiet she was barely audible.

“This is it, isn’t it?” she mumbled, not daring to meet his gaze. “You’re really leaving.”

“I am needed at home,” Espio replied gently. He made his way to her side at the window and took her by the shoulders. “Hey. You’ll be safe here. It takes a lot to get through these guys. And if you ever need us, we’re just a call away.” He waited, but she didn’t answer or look at him. “I’ll contact you as soon as we find Mighty and Ray.”

Scenes of Espio’s upcoming mission and all of its details flashed across Kay’s vision. She finally looked up at him for a moment before throwing her arms around him in a hug. She’d just begun to feel him hugging her back when she pulled away and looked back out the window, avoiding his gaze once more. Eventually, however, she knew she would have to really say goodbye. She looked at him again and saw that he was smiling at her.

Espio stood up straight and bowed to her in the traditional Dragon Kingdom style. Kay bowed back and watched him move to the doorway. He glanced back at her briefly, gave her an encouraging smile, and was gone.

Kay was alone.

She looked out the window towards Station Square, wondering how this new stage of her life as a Mobian would unfold.
