Chapter Seventeen

The Tornado started up with a roar as the engines came back to life, alerting Kay that it was time to start wrapping things up with Rouge. After the group had split up to help clean up the mess and get everything organized again, all but Shadow had returned to the plane’s landing site. Kay guessed he was back at HQ, possibly brooding on that ledge in the mountainside.

Knowing that their time together was drawing to a close, Kay again felt guilty for her departing so soon and said to Rouge, “I’m sorry about this. I feel like I’ve really wasted your time.”

Rouge shrugged a shoulder. “Don’t worry about it. The alternative would have been fighting guys a hundred times tougher than you. I was glad for the break.”

“Thanks, Rouge,” Kay said with a tentative smile. She was aware that Tails was getting into his pilot’s seat and that Sonic was helping Amy up onto one of the wings. Time was running out. “I appreciate your help. And...” Here Kay paused and thought briefly of her other trainer. He had been rough with her since her arrival and now seemed to hate her (for reasons she still hadn’t fully meditated on), but he had still helped her in his own unique way. So she finished with: “...give Shadow my thanks as well.”

Rouge smiled and nodded. “Will do, kid. Good luck.”

Kay took a step back and bowed to her trainer in the Dragon Kingdom style, briefly thinking of Espio again. She had missed him a lot since her arrival here, mainly because he was the one she’d been with the most and was, in a sense, her closest friend here on Mobius. Rouge, for her part, saluted her farewell just as a G.U.N. agent would. Kay had already gone to Commander Tower and informed him of her departure. He seemed all too happy to have her out of his hair, though she’d only been there for a week.

Goodbyes aside, Kay turned away from Rouge and walked towards the Tornado, where Sonic stood waiting to help her up onto the wing opposite Amy. Within those few strides she glanced around Station Square one last time, though she didn’t feel sad about her leaving. There were too many humans here, and humans only reminded her of her past. She was glad to be moving on to another Mobians-only location.

Sonic smiled as he gently took her waist and hoisted her up onto the wing of the plane before leaping up onto it himself. Kay could already feel the plane’s engine vibrating along the wing, making the machine seem alive for a moment. She gripped the front edge as she had seen Sonic and Amy do in her comics, nervous energy beginning to pump through her.

She turned to Sonic and said, “Uh...I’ve never done this before...”

“No sweat. I’ve got you,” Sonic replied, scooting closer to her. Then he turned his attention towards the pilot. “Ready, Tails?”

“All set!” The young fox replied eagerly.

“Then let’s get this show in the air!”

As soon as the plane lurched forward, Kay let out a startled yelp and gripped the wing even tighter. Sonic moved so he could wrap his arm around her back and hold her in place when the machine took off. Soon the Tornado was picking up speed, zooming down the empty street, and before she knew it Kay felt her stomach flop like it always did when a plane lifted into the air.

At first she was afraid of falling, but once the plane had lifted high enough and settled into a balanced position above the clouds, all of her nervousness vanished and she could think only of how incredible this experience was.

“This is amazing!” she exclaimed to Sonic above the roar of the engine. The wind was making her quills fly out behind her, but it was cool and reassuring. From up here one could almost forget about all the problems going on below.

“Right? Coolest view on Mobius,” he replied. Then he smirked a little and shrugged. “Well, above it, anyway.”

She remembered their destination and asked, “How long do you think it will take us to reach Angel Island?”

“Not very long. Half hour, maybe. Angel Island is right by Albion at this time of the year.”

Kay’s thoughts drifted to the ruined city of the echidnas and wondered if she would see it on their way to the island. That wasn’t what occupied most of her thoughts, however. Angel Island and its residents did. She was going to see Knuckles again, which excited her, but she mostly felt an overwhelming sadness for what he had been through recently. She wouldn’t be surprised or hurt if he refused to help her. He was having a seriously hard time right now, and she was going to respect his decision, whatever it turned out to be.

She also knew that she would soon be reunited with the Chaotix, since they had returned to Angel Island after locating Mighty and Ray in Sand Blast City. She remembered what happened between her and Vector and wondered whether they would get along during her stay. She thought of Espio and how he had been kind and encouraging to her during her first few steps into this Albion prophecy, despite the brief period of time in which he hadn’t fully trusted her. She looked forward to meeting Mighty and Ray as well. Even if she didn’t stay to train on Angel Island, she was glad for the opportunity to see her old friends again.

Soon a brown shape emerged from the clouds ahead, slowly filling in the details as the Tornado approached the island. It was a magnificent sight – mountains, rivers, forests...every aspect of the location was absolutely beautiful. It had been named perfectly.

Tails began to descend towards the western part of the island, where a tiny piece of rock floated alongside the greater one like a faithful follower. Once they were low enough Kay could see the bridge connecting the Shrine Isle to the mainland. She also saw a lone figure on the Isle at the same time that Sonic startled her out of her tranquility with a friendly shout.

“Hey, Knuckles!”

The figure moved slightly; thanks to Kay’s ability to see everything at once she was able to zoom in on the scene in her mind. Knuckles was glancing into the sky, seeing the plane, and lifting a hand in a half-hearted wave of acknowledgement. Kay again felt a stab of sympathy for the echidna – the last of his kind.

The Tornado circled gracefully until it had descended enough to come in for a landing. There was a long stretch of open field near the Isle, and that was where Tails chose to rest his machine. For an instant Kay could hear Bunnie in her mind, quoting a line from one of the TV shows: “Just look at that ground come rushing up to meet us!”

It was indeed rushing up quite quickly – rapidly enough for Kay’s nervousness to return. Again Sonic wrapped a protective arm around her to ensure she wouldn’t fall when the plane touched down. The impact was a bit rough, but most aircraft landed in that manner. Fortunately, the stretch was long enough that Tails didn’t have to “slam on the brakes” in order for the plane to stop in time. He was able to bring his machine to a slow and peaceful halt, much to Kay’s relief. It came to a full stop just a few yards from the bridge to the Shrine Isle.

Once it was safe to get off of the wing, Sonic leapt down skillfully and then turned to Kay. “You all good?”

“That was awesome!” she exclaimed in reply, her heart racing in excitement as she maneuvered herself into a sitting position on the wing. “I want to do that again.”

Sonic laughed. “I’m sure you’ll get your chance.” He reached up to help her down, holding her steady once her feet touched solid ground again. Kay swayed a bit and gripped him tighter in order not to fall.

“Sorry, Sonic,” she mumbled in a half-dizzy state.

“It’s all right,” he replied. “That first trip is a real doozy, huh?”

Kay’s world was spinning. “Yeah.”

“Maybe you should sit down for a minute,” the blue hedgehog suggested, gently helping her rest in the astoundingly green grass. “It helps to feel something solid after riding on air like that.”

“Yeah,” Kay mumbled again, only half aware of what he was saying. She vaguely noticed him letting go of her so he could move to the other wing and help Amy down from her perch. She didn’t need any assistance, but he was being a gentleman. Through her dizzy spell, Kay smiled a bit.

It took a few minutes, but the world gradually stopped spinning and came into clear and firm focus. At this point Kay was able to marvel at the beauty around her – everything from the tree-covered mountains to the clear, deep blue water of the river to the simple plain she rested on.

Then she remembered why she was here, and her focus became entirely different. She turned her head in the direction of the Shrine Isle. It was time to see Knuckles.
