Chapter Four

Silence was a rarity when the Chaotix were around, but now the silence was deafening. Kay was still being plagued by visions from all over Mobius – people she didn’t even know were changing history inside her head. But the vision that held her attention the most was that of Nicole back in the city, and how the lynx had watched her with Espio. Guilt was gnawing at her, though she’d done nothing to encourage the chameleon. Hopefully this is all just post-realization trauma, she thought to herself.

Kay looked up from her place at the table at Espio, who sat across from her. He kept his eyes lowered as though he were staring at his empty plate. Finally Kay couldn’t stand the quiet anymore and she stood up, snatching his plate before he could snatch hers and placing both of them in the sink to wash later.

“I will be ready to leave whenever you are,” he spoke, breaking the stillness. Kay watched four more scenes go by in her head (ending with Nicole again) before she turned around to answer.

“There’s one more thing I have to do first. I won’t be long.” That being said she made her way to what had been her temporary bedroom in Freedom HQ. Just before she stepped over the threshold she saw Vector in her mind and turned to look at his closed door for what felt like the thousandth time that day. The memory of his finding her with Geoffrey popped up, but she shook her head to clear it and stepped inside Amy’s room, closing the door behind her.

Again there was silence. For a few moments Kay just stood there with her back to the door, trying to figure out what to say. After a long while she sighed and said, “I’m sorry, Nicole.”

“You have nothing to be sorry for.” It was the first time Kay heard Nicole’s voice – she was so used to communicating through text. Nicole sounded just like she had in the original series, only less computerized. Seconds later her lynx form materialized in the center of the room, and the two girls stood looking at one another quietly. “You are better for him.”

Kay let out another sigh. “Don’t go there, Nicole.”

“You are flesh and blood. I am a computer,” Nicole reasoned calmly.

Kay stared at her. “But you’re so much more than that. You’re his friend. He depends on you. Everyone does.”

“I can break into complex computer systems for him. That is all.”

“Nicole, he—” Kay bit her lip to keep herself from finishing the sentence. She shook her head again and started over. “You’re a Mobian to him, not just a tool or even a computer.”

“Kay.” Nicole gave her a soft smile. “I do not mind that he is beginning to show signs of affection towards you. Mobians are drawn to Mobians. It’s only natural.”

Oh, boy, here we go, Kay thought. “I’m leaving in a few minutes. Once he drops me off, that’s the end of it.”

“You may be out of sight, but you will not be out of mind,” Nicole told her seriously. “Espio never forgets.”

“He’s known me for two weeks,” Kay replied. “I’m counting on him to forget.”

A puzzled frown appeared on Nicole’s face. “Why?”

Kay shrugged. “I have my reasons.” She paused for a moment to think about how things had been going between Espio and Nicole before her arrival, and where their relationship would have gone if she hadn’t arrived to alter the future. “Just promise me something.”

“Don’t let anything change between you two because of me,” Kay said, staring straight into Nicole’s emerald green eyes. “Act like I was never here.”

Nicole was silent for a minute or so before she replied. “I cannot promise that, but my actions and thoughts of him have not changed.”

“Good.” Kay smiled, feeling a little better. “I wish you luck.”

Again Nicole looked confused, but she said “thank you” all the same.

Enough love drama. “Well, I suppose I’d better be leaving. I’ll have to meet G.U.N. sometime, right?”

Nicole nodded once and smiled. “I’m sure you will make a good impression on them.”

“I hope so,” Kay muttered. She knew that G.U.N. was serious business – their agents were highly trained professionals who knew the battlefield like no one else. It made her nervous to think that she was going to meet two of these agents (and Mobians, at that), but at the same time she knew now how their system worked. The hardest part would be convincing them she was a fast learner.

Kay and Nicole exchanged goodbyes, and the lynx fizzled away into the computer of HQ. Kay took a moment to glance at Amy’s pink room once more before she left it behind and made her way across the living area of lower HQ, up the stairs, and into the computer room, where Espio stood waiting for her.

He turned when he heard the door opened, his arms crossed in deep thought. “Ready?”

“Yeah. Are you?”

“Yes.” Espio paused. “Do you know what Station Square looks like?” Kay nodded, and the chameleon tossed her a small gold ring. “Good. I don’t. I’ve never been to a human settlement.”

That surprised Kay, though she was supposed to know that already. Maybe the Emerald hadn’t told her everything after all. She looked at the ring that she’d caught. It fit into her palm and glinted in the light, and though she’d never used one before, Kay figured it out quickly. She tossed the ring in front of her as if she were flipping a coin, and it grew to a size big enough for them to step through. She envisioned Station Square in her mind. Within seconds the ring began to shine with a golden light that acknowledged their destination and waited for them to travel through it.

This is it, Kay thought, taking a deep breath to calm herself. It didn’t help much, though, because her next thought was, I’m going to meet Shadow and Rouge.

And her heart beat so fast she thought it would jump out of her chest and race her to the G.U.N. capital.
