Chapter Fifteen

Kay glanced around the familiar interior of the Death Egg II once Eggman had entered and then turned to him. “This is getting old, doctor.”

“You’re telling me,” he muttered as he began to press some buttons on his carrier’s control panel.

Kay recalled the visions she’d had of the alternate future and asked, “What happened to Doctor Wily? I thought you were going to team up and create the second Genesis Wave.”

Eggman stopped what he was doing and looked at her. “How do you know about Doctor Wily?”

When he’d transformed her into a Mobian all those weeks ago he had already known about her vast knowledge concerning Sonic and the others; what he didn’t know was that since her first escape she’d learned so much more. So her reply was: “I know everything.”

He scowled at her, clearly not amused. “Right. Well, I won’t need him as long as I get what I want from you.” He then returned to his control panel.

“That won’t happen.”

“We’ll see.”

Suddenly the mechanical arm that had her in its grasp extended, moving towards a small, circular platform in the center of the room. Once she was hovering above it the arm let her go, but a glass shield instantly came down to trap her inside before she could make a run for it. From within her new cage she watched as Eggman emerged from his carrier and moved towards the console that sat against the wall, pressing even more buttons once he got there. She waited for him to gloat, but to her surprise he said nothing.

She took the opportunity to observe her new environment. The setup looked very similar to one she had seen in her comics and some of the television shows. It was a room that all Freedom Fighters (and even some of Eggman’s minions) feared entering, for once they did, they were never the same.

Then it hit her, and she gasped. “This is a roboticizer!”

“Very observant, my dear,” Eggman replied, never turning to face her. “I’ve decided that if I can’t get information from you willingly, I’ll have to do it the hard way.” Soon the pad she stood on began to glow dimly, and a humming noise filled the capsule. Kay gasped, her heart racing wildly. It was then that the doctor turned to her, one eyebrow raised. “Unless you would prefer to keep your Mobian body, of course.”

Kay frowned, giving him her answer immediately despite the consequences she knew would follow. “I’ll never help you.”

“Have it your way.” Eggman turned his back to her once more, pulling down on a lever. The roboticizer fired up its engine, humming louder than before. Kay instinctively took a step back and pressed her hands against the glass on either side of her.

What happened next occurred so fast that she didn’t even have time to register it. The instant Kay touched the glass she could feel the roboticizer’s energy. It surged up her arms and spread throughout her entire body in a matter of milliseconds. There was a blinding flash of white light, a shattering sound, and she was sent flying backwards, landing on the floor and rolling over a few times. There were several clinking sounds on the metallic floor, and the smell of smoke filled her nose. Kay coughed and tried to sit up, ignoring the sudden headache that had come over her.

When she was finally able to open her eyes again, she almost couldn’t believe them. The roboticizer – every last inch of it – was in pieces all over the room. Glass lay all around her, chunks of metal sparked and smoked in the corners. She stared in astonishment, about to voice her thoughts, when Eggman burst through the ringing in her ears.

You broke my roboticizer!” He yelled.

Kay turned to stare at him, then again at the machine. I did? She wondered, amazed and terrified at the same time.

“How did you do that?!” Eggman demanded.

She turned to look at him, her fear overwriting her wonder as she answered, “I don’t know!”

Another crash sounded behind her, and both of them turned to look as a spiky, blue ball tore through the outer wall of the Death Egg and landed inside. It was Sonic, just having done a spin-dash. Once he located his target he raced over to her and knelt down at her side.

“Kay, are you all right?” he asked hurriedly, scanning her for any injuries.

Kay looked back at the damage she’d done and told him in a shaky voice, “I just broke the roboticizer.”

Sonic jerked his head to the side, took in the wreck before him, and then threw his head back and laughed. “That’s awesome!”

Eggman didn’t think so. He glared at them and shouted, “This isn’t over yet, hedgehog!” More buttons were pressed, and within a few moments robots were filing into the room, weapons ready and locked onto their targets.

“I’ve got this,” Sonic said with a smirk. He leapt from his position at Kay’s side and began attacking his attackers effortlessly, just as he was famous for doing.

Kay, meanwhile, couldn’t seem to tear her gaze from the remains of the roboticizer. Things were catching up to her now – feeling the machine’s energy when she touched the glass, experiencing a thrill when the power raced through her; the blinding flash of light and shattering glass...

Slowly she came back to her senses and became aware of the present once again, though there was one startling fact that still remained etched in her mind: I just broke the roboticizer. How do you break a roboticizer? She thought about it a bit longer as the sounds of Sonic’s battle played in the background. She searched all her knowledge for an answer and came to only one conclusion: Chaos Energy. The more she thought about it, the more it both thrilled and terrified her. She had had her first taste of the Chaos Force just now.

“Unbelievable,” she whispered.

Suddenly Sonic was at her side again, asking, “Can you stand?” He took her hand and helped her to her feet, but she was still recovering from the power surge and was unable to support her own weight. She collapsed into him, but he was ready and scooped her into his arms for the third time that day. Behind them, more robots came into view. “Let’s blow this joint!” Sonic said, and the next thing Kay knew they were falling down through the air.

As the city raced up to meet them, Eggman activated his megaphone and called after them. “I’m not finished yet, hedgehog! You hear me? This isn’t over! I will have you!”

It was a good thing that Sonic had years of experience on his side. Kay squeezed her eyes shut as he landed on one of the skyscrapers and then jumped from there to shorter buildings until he could make a safe leap to street level. Once she felt him stop moving she opened her eyes again and glanced at their immediate surroundings.

The battle had stopped; Eggman’s robots were retreating back into the Death Egg and the G.U.N. soldiers were already spreading out to help their wounded. She saw Tails’ plane begin to descend. A couple hundred yards away she noticed Amy running towards them, her hammer still at the ready.

Only when the Death Egg itself began its retreat did Sonic let down his guard. He knelt and gently set her down on the pavement, keeping a hand on her back to support her as he asked, “Are you okay? Did he hurt you?”

Kay breathed heavily, still trying to come to terms with what she had done. Again she remembered how it felt to have all that power surge through her. She was still unsure as to exactly how she had broken the roboticizer, but the fact that she had done so proved her earlier theory: there was already Chaos Energy inside of her. She just needed to learn how to use it.

Finally she turned to look her rescuer right in the eye. He gasped as new information filled her ever-learning mind, and when the wave was gone she said, “Sonic, we need to talk.”
