Here am I, hips swallowed

Finger-nails thick with clay

My heavy bones are bound for

Where forbidden creatures lay

They drag my heels, down, down

To a realm of mud and stone

With hair for rope, and hearts for heath

And skulls for their church domes

Here am I, submerging

My feet have left the ledge

And there you stand, with lace-white feet

Toes dipped in the swamp’s edge

Arms outstretched, calling

“Chase me, chase me!”

O, what a pretty game it was

When in possession of my limbs

But chase you farther I cannot

This swamp won’t let me swim
