Heart beats fast

Everyone wanted her to wear white. They said it was gentle, innocent, soft. Lux knew that love... love was more than gentle, innocent and soft. Love was red. Love was pain, beauty, heartache. It was the color of blood, it was the color of blush, of lips on skin, of tongues. Lux would not wear any color on stage other than deep, crimson red.

Colors and promises

It flowed to the ground, trailing behind her like water, like a red wedding gown, like the wedding gown of a woman scorned. The gown a woman would wear after the man left her at the alter. After the man told her he didn't love her. After the man stood there and watched her leave. It was beautifully sad.

How to be brave
How can I love when I'm afraid to fall

She stood in the middle of the stage, stared out at all the people who were staring back at her, waiting. She wanted to look them all in the eyes and scream at them, tell them “It's a lie! Love is a lie!” but words wouldn't form in her mouth. Only lyrics would. Only the song she chose for tonight would.

But watching you stand alone
All of my doubt suddenly goes away somehow

A song from a movie, that's the theme, and of course this one stood out to Lux, because its soft and tragic and makes her want to make love to a vampire. A Thousand Years by Christina Perri, from the movie Breaking Dawn. Lux wasn't a fan of the movie, but she was a fan of the song, and it made her tremble with pain when she sang it for the first time, by herself. Usually she would sing it to Harry, get his feedback, but he's still in the hospital, recovering. So she sang it to herself. Alone.

One step closer

Now she has to sing it on stage in front of everyone, let them all see her vulnerable and sad. Let them all see her heart as it gets ripped from her chest and laid out in front of them, bloody and broken on the floor, spilling out the color of her dress. Lux has to look into the cameras, knowing that Harry was somewhere watching her, she has to look into his eyes and sing a song that he will know is meant for him because who else could it ever be about? Who else but Harry?

“I have died everyday waiting for you..” Her voice cracked with emotion, and she could feel tears sting in her eyes already. She was hoping she could control this a little bit longer. “Darling, don't be afraid I have loved you for a thousand years, I'll love you for a thousand more...”

Her entire performance was riveting. People sat at the edges of their seats, feeling their chests crack open as she sang with such hope and sadness, her eyes shining with tears that refused to fall. Harry was one of those people. He sat as close to his hospital room television as he could get, his eyes locked on her. He caught himself reaching his fingertips up to touch the screen more than once, forcing his hands back down to his side. It wasn't the same as actually touching her.

I could be touching her right now, He thought to himself as he watched her smile at the standing ovation of her performance. His lips pulled upwards at the sight of it, wishing he was there to hug and kiss her and congratulate her on a job well done. His heart pounded in his chest, making the machines hooked up to him beep faster. The nurse walked in immediately, looking from him to the TV and then sighing and shaking her head as she shut the machine up.

“How amazing it must be to be young and in love.” She mused, fixing his pillows and checking his IV.

“We aren't in..” He stopped himself, looking away from the screen as Lux faded from it. “love..”

The nurse chuckled to herself, shaking her head again. “I told that girl when she was in here, you would have crawled on hands and knees through broken glass and fire to get to her. And you think you aren't in love? Maybe we should check your head while we're at it, eh?”

Harry laughed at that, sighing as he moved back to his bed, staring down at the bag that sat next to it.

“You can't hide here forever, kiddo.” The nurse said softly, “We told you that you can check on out whenever you feel ready. You're strong enough to be back with her now.”

“That's the thing... I'm not strong enough.” He whispered, “At least not emotionally.”

“Believe it or not, I remember what it's like to be young and in love. Wasn't too long ago that I was your age and crazy about a boy. But when you're young and crazy about someone... every little thing feels like the end of the world. It doesn't have to be so complicated, you know. It can be simple. You just have to let go. It will all work itself out. And that cute little blond of yours? She's strong willed. Ain't no way she's gonna stick around and wait for you to pull your head out of your ass. So I suggest you stop complicating things and start moving. You are young. Live.”

Harry watched her remove the IV from his arm, take off the little plastic sticky things on his chest that monitor his heart, and set it all down on the table.

“All you have to do is sign here, and you're free.” She whispered, handing him a piece of paper and a pen. He stared up at her for a long time, looked at the bags under her eyes and the wrinkles around her mouth from all the smiles throughout her life. He thought about Lux when she's old, about how he hopes she'll have a twinkle in her eyes and a smile on her lips when she thinks back to the British boy that invaded her life and made her feel every emotion possible.

“What happened with you and your first real love?” Harry asked before he took the paper from her.

She smiled then, her lips twitching upwards almost sadly, as a softness took over her eyes.

“I loved him every day from the moment I met him to the moment he left me, and then I loved him every day after that. And when I think back to that time in my life, I smile and I think about how much we loved each other, even if it wasn't for our entire lives. We were young, but what we had was real and true and it never went away for me. Not one day passed that I didn't love him.”

“That sounds sad.” Harry whispered, looking down at his lap.

“It is, but it's also beautiful and real.” She replied, watching him sign the papers quickly.

“Do you wanna know the exact moment I knew I was in love with her?” He said softly, looking down at his hands as they shook in his lap. He didn't wait for her response, just continued speaking. “She was jumping up and down on her bed, and I was quite annoyed with it, so I sat up and was about to tell her to stop when I caught her eye. And her smile grew. It was like, the most beautiful and massive smile I'd ever seen on anyone's face. Then she jumped on me, and I knew she was it for me. I just felt it.”

“So go tell her.” The nurse smiled at him, squeezing his shoulder tightly before turning and walking out, going back to her job and her life as if nothing had happened. She had no idea that all because of a few words, she was about to change the course of Harry and Lux's lives completely.

Harry changed his clothes, grabbed his bag, and ran out of the hospital as if he were on fire.

Only one thought in his mind.

I love her.”
