“ITS DUETS WEEK!!!”

All anybody saw was a red sweater and a mop of curly hair as Harry sprinted through the hallways in search for his girlfriend. He's had a smile on his face since the second he found out. Mentors and their contestants get to do a duet this week, the perfect week for Harry and Lux because he can support her when her voice is weak.

“Lux!! LUX!! Has anybody seen Lux?!” He was shouting in his heavy accent, not slowing down to listen to anyone's answers. His long skinny legs carried him effortlessly up the stairs, and as he hit the top he nearly ran over Sara, who let out a girly scream when he stopped just short of hitting her.

“HARRY!” She squealed breathlessly, “You almost ran me over!”

“Sorry, Sar. You're so teeny tiny, I didn't see you there.” He gave her a cheeky smile, watching her giggle as she smacked his arm. “Hey, have you seen Lux? Have you heard the good news?”

“Umm...” Sara paused, “Which question should I answer first?”

“Lux.” He immediately stated, watching her smile at him.

“She's in our room. And what's the good news?”

“Its duets week, babe! Better go get your boy and get ready for some stiff competition!” He laughed, messing her hair up as he walked past her to head for her shared room with Lux.

“We're gonna SLAY you guys!” Sara said happily, twirling around to run down the stairs in search of Niall just as Harry was searching for Lux. Everyone wanted to pick their songs as fast as possible.

“Luxie!” Harry yelled as he shoved her bedroom door open without knocking.

He saw her body jolt in surprise, her wide brown eyes turning on him.

“Sorry, love. Did I scare you?” He said quietly, almost whispering as he sat down behind her on the bed. He pressed his lips to her shoulder softly, trailing his hands down to squeeze her hips. She nodded a little bit, leaning back into him immediately, letting out a long breath.

“Feeling okay?” He asked, turning to look down at the side of her face. Her eyes slid halfway open and she nodded again, turning her face to nuzzle it into the crook of his neck.

“I have good news.” He whispered directly into her ear, smiling slowly. Her eyebrows raised as she lifted her face to look at him as he spoke. “It's duets week.”

A smile lit up her face instantly, which led to him smiling as well, because nothing made him happier than seeing her happy. She reached over to the bedside table for her white board.

'What are we gonna sing?'

“I have a few ideas... I want you to rest for a couple more days and then we'll bring you in for practice right before the show. I'll take care of everything, I just want you to get better.” He said, rubbing her arms.

Lux stared at him for a few seconds, sighing softly as she wrote, 'I'm scared.'

“Why?” He frowned, tugging her closer.

'I don't want to go home yet. I just got you.'

Harry nodded, leaning down to kiss her forehead firmly. “You're not going anywhere.”

She looked up at him doubtfully, but he kissed her lips to hush her fears.

“If you go now...” He paused, “Then I'll just have to take you home with me.”

Lux's eyebrows shot up as high as they could go, her lips parting in surprise.

'To the UK?'

He smiled and nodded, “Yes, silly. If you get eliminated, I'm taking you away with me.”

Lux swallowed hard, tears shining in her eyes as she shook her head slowly, writing on her board. 'What about New York? It's my home. What am I going to do in the UK?'

His smile fell as he read, looking up into her eyes slowly.

“Be with me...” He painfully whispered, his fingertips shaking against her skin.

A tear slowly rolled down her cheek and she shook his hand off when he tried to wipe it away. Harry snapped his hand back as if she burned him when she pushed him off, and he watched her hand shake fiercely as she wrote another message to him.

'I can't just up and leave to another country.'

“So that's it then? This competition ends and then what? This ends, too?” He gestured to the two of them, implicating their relationship or whatever it was. He wasn't even sure now.

“No, Harry, I..” Lux began to speak, and he clamped his hand over her mouth to stop her.

He waited for a second before moving it away, watching her sigh heavily before writing on her stupid board. She couldn't wait to burn it when she was done using it.

'I don't want it to end but I'm trying to be realistic. I don't want either of us to get false hopes.'

“I see.” He whispered, stiffly moving away from her to stand up. “Maybe we should have never started then, huh? Might make this a lot easier on you when its time to part ways.”

'You're being immature.'

“No, no. I'm being realistic!” He slightly raised his voice, turning his back to her and running a hand through his wild curls. His heart was beating out of control and all he could hear was the annoying fucking squeak of the marker against that white board. He couldn't stand it.

“Will you fucking stop with that stupid board?! Its driving me crazy!” He snatched it out of her hands and threw it at the wall, watching it smash against it with a loud crash before falling to the ground.

Lux jumped when he did it, allowing her fingers to let the marker slowly roll down to the floor as well. He turned to look at her slowly, seeing that they were both in stiff, defensive stances, as if they were scared of one another. Or protecting something, like their hearts.

“Young and in love and stupid. I shouldn't be surprised, but somehow I still am. Why did I have to fall in love with you?” He said softly, shaking his head. “Of all people...you, across the country, in another world. Why did I ever believe for a second that this would work? Why did I expect to be this happy forever? You demolished all the walls I put up just to rebuild them ten times as strong.”

Her cheeks were drenched with tears now, her face turned away from his so he wouldn't see.

“I just wanted to be with you.” He whispered hopelessly, feeling his feet numbly carry him toward the door to leave. “I just wanted you to stay with me. Stupid me.”

“Harry.” Lux whispered, choking back her sobs as she turned to watch him go.

“Don't.” He begged her, pressing his forehead against the door and shutting his eyes tightly.

“Please don't make me feel any dumber than I already do.”

She let out a quiet sob, turning away and bending over, pressing her hands to her thighs as she breathed deeply to stop herself from breaking down into ugly sobs. When she felt a little more composed, she stood and turned back to where Harry was standing, only to see that he had slipped out her door.

Lux took a moment to look around her bedroom, nearly praying that he would be standing in a different place instead of gone entirely. He wasn't. Harry was gone, and she didn't know if she would ever get him back at this point. She could feel a thickness in her throat and a heavy ache in her chest as she went to grab her white board off the floor, on it was a message that Harry would never see.

'I'm sorry. I don't want to fight with you, I love you too much. I'll go wherever you go.'

She pressed her fingertips to the board, and then with a choked back cry and a broken heart, she wiped the message away until the board was clean of any sign of her apology. An apology won't fix this, it won't tear back into his heart and make him trust her or love her. His walls were back up, and like he said, her stupid mistake made them tougher than ever.

Lux may never break them down again.
