46. Stupid

5 days of Lux texting Harry non-stop. 5 days of Harry's phone being turned off. 5 days of Lux unable to do anything about their fight without risking her voice. 5 days of Harry's mind wandering in a terrible manner, thinking up all types of situations Lux could be getting into with him not around. 5 days and Harry turned his phone on to 64 text messages from Lux. 5 days and she got 1 text in return.

'Meet in studio tomorrow. 9am.'

Lux's heart did a bunch of flips when she saw Harry's name pop up on her phone's screen, but it fell when she saw the bluntness of his text. She doesn't remember the last time a text from Harry didn't include 'Love u babe x' at the end of it. But at this point, she'll take whatever she can get from him. She decided not to text back because he probably already thought she was psychotic from all her other texts over the week. Besides, maybe if she ignores him, he'll think about her and wonder what she's up to. Maybe he'll even come check on her.

She sighed with a heavy heart as she laid down in her bed, knowing that with tomorrow morning on her mind, there was no way she was getting a good sleep.

Maybe a cup of tea will help with that, She thought as she tossed the covers off her legs and slid out of bed. She shivered as her feet touched the cold wood of the hallway floors, and in her tank top and sweats, she adventured down to the kitchen. Before Lux entered, she could hear familiar hushed voices.

“...just don't think it's going to work out with them. I told him to be careful with her, she just doesn't know how to deal with his dark side..” Louis. Must be talking about Harry.

“She's a tough girl, I think she'll make it work. I have faith in her.” Zayn. Always such a doll.

“Maybe we shouldn't be talking about this, guys. It's not our business.” Liam. Puppy dog.

“I'm kinda hungry, is there anything to eat in this kitchen?” Lux had to cover her mouth to snuff out the sound of her laughter. Typical Niall.

“You all saw how happy he was when he was with her... he overreacted with the UK thing. If it were the other way around, we would be on Harry's side. Nobody is moving across the country to be with someone. Hazza isn't gonna move to New York, Lux isn't gonna move to the UK. He freaked at her because he's not ready for a long distance relationship.” Zayn was whispering lower than before, and Lux had to take a few steps forward to catch everything he was saying.

“He freaked at her because he loves the stupid girl and she doesn't quite grasp how insane that fact is! Harry doesn't do this, he doesn't put his heart at risk and Lux is so clumsy that she's gonna break it. She already has! If they get back together, it'll just happen again!” Louis was upset, so Lux tried not to let all the mean things he was saying hurt her. She knew he was just sticking up for his best friend.

“Don't talk about her like that,” Zayn growled softly, “Lux is good.”

“If you love her so much, why don't you date her then?” Louis snapped, and Lux decided that it was time for this conversation to end. She stepped out of her hiding spot and strolled into the kitchen casually, noticing the dead silence and thick tension rise in the room as she did.

“Hi Lux. You're up kinda late...” Liam said quietly, forcing a smile as he shot a look at Louis and Zayn. She pointed to the mug in her hand and then at the kettle of hot water on the stove.

“Oh yeah, go on then.” Liam nodded, watching her smile at him before pouring it for herself. She looked up at all the boys as she silently made her tea just how she liked it, making direct eye contact with Louis on several occasions. He caught her stare and looked away almost immediately, his cheeks turning a hint of red.

She finished her tea and moved over to stand next to Zayn, who looked guilty even though he had no reason to be. He stuck up for her, and she really appreciated it. Lux gestured to a scrap paper on the kitchen counter and a marker, and Liam immediately handed them over to her.

'I wish we could talk' She wrote and slid it over in front of Zayn.

He looked down at her and she caught his eye, smiling up at him softly, watching his lips curve upwards back at her. Her heart still melted a little bit at the sight of Zayn. She wonders if she'll always have a soft spot for him. She reached over and poked him in the stomach gently, and he grabbed her finger to stop her, wrapping his fingers around it and holding it there for a second.

“Are you serious right now?” Louis spit out, seeming as if he were unable to hold it back.

Lux jumped, turning to look at him but not pulling her hand away from Zayn, and he didn't move to release it either. It wasn't a big deal. She poked him, he grabbed her finger, it wasn't like Zayn was fucking her on the kitchen counter.

“Harry loves you! What are you doing right now?!” Louis was nearly yelling at this point, gesturing to her finger locked in Zayn's hand. “You stupid, stupid girl!”

She stared back at him, feeling the tension rise even further in the room. Louis kept his eyes locked with hers, and for the first time since she met him, she saw anger in his eyes.

“'Ey, stop calling her that!” Zayn snapped back, finally releasing his strong grip on her finger. She flexed it out, listening to the sound of her knuckle cracking, casting her eyes down at the ground.

How do you fight your battles with no voice?

“I'll stop calling her that when she stops acting like it!” Louis stepped around the corner and put his hands onto Lux's shoulders, moving them up to grab her face and make her look at him.

“My best mate is crazy in love with you and you don't know how to deal with it. He's so in love with you that he asked you to move to another country so he can be with you. And before even thinking that it might hurt his feelings, you said no. He's crushed, Lux! Why wouldn't you just talk to him?!”

“Lou, ya idiot, she can't talk!” Niall snuffed back a laugh, covering his mouth.

Louis removed his hands from her face and stepped back slowly, staring her down.

“If she had something to say to him, she would say it. Nothing would stop Lux.”

“The risk of losing her entire singing career might stop her, yeah? Knock it off now!” Zayn pushed his friend back further away from Lux, but Louis' eyes remained locked with hers.

“I think Harry mentioned to me once that if he had to pick between a hundred platinum records and Lux, he would choose her without hesitation.” Was all Louis whispered before he broke eye contact with her, turning to walk out of the kitchen.

“I would choose him, too.”

Louis stopped walking and turned around, seeing that his three band mates all had their eyes on Lux as well. After her not speaking for so long, it shocked them to hear her voice so suddenly.

“I texted him 64 times since we fought, and every text was either an apology or me telling him that I will go wherever he wants me to go. I'll follow him anywhere. I'm not a stupid girl, I have stupid moments, but I'm trying to fix it and if Harry won't let me fix this then he's the stupid one. Not me. I love him. I still love him...”

Lux took a giant breath after her speech, clasping her fingers over her mouth to stop herself from continuing on. She's risking her voice again, but she did notice that as she spoke, her tonsils didn't throb as they did before. It was a dull ache now.

“Lux,” Zayn whispered, shaking his head, “you don't have to explain yourself to anyone.”

“Except Harry.” Louis said, but his voice was softer now, almost sympathetic toward her.

She nodded once, picking her mug back up and laying a quick kiss to Zayn's cheek before heading to leave the kitchen. Louis blocked her exit, pressing a hand to her arm softly.

“I'm sorry. I'm just worried...I just...” He paused, looking down at his feet. “Are we okay then?”

Lux nodded again, waiting for him to step aside so she could leave. He didn't.

He was staring past her now, at where the door adjoined to the living room. She turned around to see what he was looking at, and was surprised to see Harry at the door, his eyes half-open and his hair a mess. He must have been asleep on the couch and woke up due to all the commotion.

Harry's eyes were glued onto Lux, as hers were onto him.

“I thought I heard you.” He whispered, speaking to her for the first time in 5 days. It was such a relief to hear his voice, his words directed at her finally. Finally.

“You did.” Zayn said for her. Lux was unable to move from where she stood but felt the desperate need to. Her legs ached in pain as if the only thing that would make them stop is if she lifted them and began to walk toward Harry. She forced herself to stay put.

“I thought maybe I was dreaming but you, you were really speaking, weren't you?”

His lips moved and they were all she could look at. She nodded slowly.

“Oh...” He murmured, and she swore she almost saw one side of his mouth twitch up into a smirk, but it was gone as quickly as it appeared to her.

She watched him stand there and continue to stare at her, not making any moves to turn and walk away. He didn't want to go back to bed now. He wouldn't get any sleep anyways.

“I'm not tired anymore.” He said softly, still watching her. “Do you want to go to the studio?”

Lux's heart leaped out of her chest, parting her lips to finally speak to him, “Okay.”

He stared at her for another minute before his body started to move and he was getting closer to her. Her heart raced, her fingers twitched, her body ached all over. His body was right in front of hers, she could smell him and see the dark circles below his eyes, the stubble on his face, and the dried toothpaste in the corner of his mouth. She could feel the warmth radiating off his body as he moved past her slowly, his arm accidentally rubbing against her skin, his eyes catching hers the moment it happened. Sparks flew through her body, and she watched him pause to look at her for a moment before leading the way to the studio.

And just like she said she would, Lux followed Harry.
