21. Okay

Harry sent Lux upstairs to wash her face and change out of her stage clothes while he went to get something for his headache and the ice cream. He put two spoons onto the counter, swallowing two Advil with water and opening the freezer. He stopped in his tracks.

Like a ghost haunting him from a better time, there in front of his face was the pint of Ben&Jerry's with the words HARRY + LUX scribbled onto it in his handwriting. He had forgotten all about it. He took it out and stared at their names, sighing softly as the two names repeated in his head, over and over, sounding more right than anything he's ever heard.

HarryandLux, HarryandLux, HarryandLux..

It was like a mantra, and he continued to repeat it to himself as he scooped up the carton and spoons, whisking them out of the kitchen and into the large living room where a large plush leather couch sat, empty. He set everything down on the table, flicked the flat-screen TV on and then headed up to check on Lux and change into sweats as well.

He stumbled up the stairs, his legs shaky and weak still, and he hated that he was in this condition in Lux's time of need. He rubbed his forehead, knocking on her door lightly before opening it, walking in without waiting for an invitation. He knew he didn't really need one anyways, Lux wouldn't care about him barging in.

Harry found her room empty, so he moved to the adjoining bathroom and slowly opened the door to it. She stood in front of the mirror, water dripping off her freshly cleaned face, and her eyes stared down at her hands as they gripped the edge of the sink.

She was breaking again.

“Luxie..” He said quietly, watching her look up slowly, staring at him through the mirror.

“Is everything all right?” He asked, knowing it was a stupid question as the words left his mouth.

“No.” She barely whispered back, looking back down at her hands.

Harry strode over to her, grabbing her from behind by her bare shoulders and leading her out into her bedroom where he sat her down on her bed. He leaned down before her, glancing up at her quickly before moving to grab her left foot. He pulled her boot off, considering making a joke about her feet smelling – which they really didn't – but decided against it. He was too tired to joke or be mean, and she didn't deserve any comments like that right now anyways.

He felt her eyes on him like fire on his skin, watching him remove her other boot as well, tossing it carelessly over his shoulder. Harry moved around her, kneeling on the bed and undoing the corset she had on for her. When it was unlaced, Lux let out a huge breath, and he smiled lightly, wondering how long she had been holding that in.

“These corsets are quite like death traps, aren't they?” He muttered, tossing it on the ground as well. Lux sat before him in black skinny pants, heavy gold necklaces, and traces of glitter across her shoulders. And nothing else. No bra.

“Um..” He paused, chuckling nervously, “Permission to continue?”

“Permission granted.” Lux found herself laughing lightly at that, and he smiled in success of making her laugh.

“I'll try not to.. um, look at your boobs but, um, they're right there, so.. um..” He mumbled, undoing her necklace and placing it gently on her nightstand. She snorted another laugh out, this one weak as well.

“I'd be worried about you if you didn't look at my boobs, honestly.” She said, “But I'll just-...”

Lux stood up mid-sentence, her back still to him so he couldn't see anything even if he was trying, and she quickly yanked a tank top on, turning to face him afterwards.

“Better?” She whispered, raising an eyebrow and moving back to her drawers, searching for something.

“Lux, sit down. Let me do that.” He protested, moving over to her, but she held a hand up and continued to go through her drawers until she found a pair of little white shorts.

“You're in worse condition than I am.” She answered, “I should be taking care of you.”

“I don't need to be taken care of. I'm not the one who just bombed on stage.” He said harshly, biting down on his tongue roughly after the words left his mouth. He instantly felt hot blood in his mouth and bit back an urge to whimper in pain. “I-.. I'm.. I'm sorry.. I didn't..”

“Yes, you did.” He looked at her face, seeing the pain clearly written across her face. “But you're not here to be my friend, you're here to mentor me and tell me when I fuck up.”

“No.” Harry protested, shaking his head. “I didn't mean that. I am your friend.”

Lux opted to stay silent, knowing that arguing with him would get her nowhere.

“I'll be right back.”

She quickly disappeared into the bathroom, and he sighed heavily as he collapsed onto her bed, waiting for her to return to him. She exited a minute later, wearing her shorts and pulling her hair up into a messy ponytail. He stood up and followed her out, realizing she was leading him to his own room.

Harry slowed down at the door, watching her stride in and immediately go for his drawers, tossing him a pair of gray sweatpants and a white v-neck. He caught them with ease, nodding at her before disappearing to his own bathroom to change and splash some cold water onto his face, hoping to sober himself up a little bit more. He was beginning to feel extremely tired.

When he came out, he found Lux sitting on his bed, flipping through the pages of a magazine she must have found on the floor, wearing his purple Jack Wills hoodie again. He watched her for a moment, picking up a gray beanie and fiddling with it as he stared. She looked up at him slowly, gave him a tiny smile and stood up, striding over to him.

She took the beanie out of his hands, yanking it onto his head and over his eyes before turning and walking out. He followed without hesitation, fixing the beanie as he did so.

“Hey..” He whispered, taking long strides to catch up to her at the stairs.

He jutted his hand out and caught her own, cradling it for a long moment, waiting to see what she would do. Lux turned and looked at him, then down at their hands, and then back up into his blue-green eyes. She looked utterly confused.

“Is this part of Nice Harry's act?” She asked softly, not trying to mean, just curious.

He shrugged lazily, “Is this okay?”

Her eyes were shiny when he looked into them, and he wondered if he was doing the wrong thing. It felt right, so how could it be wrong? There's no way. This was right.

“It's you.” She lifted one shoulder in a half-shrug, blinking quickly to keep her tears back.

“Lux..” He mumbled, reaching out his free hand to cradle one of her cheeks softly.

She sniffled, lacing her fingers through his own, “It's always okay when its with you.”
