37. Light

Lux's eyes opened during the ambulance ride, she saw the faces of the EMTs and stared at them through blurry vision before letting them close again.

Blackness.

They re-opened in the hospital, where she could hear someone yelling – no, screaming – her name. She looked around briefly until she found the source of the screaming. Harry was being held down to a hospital bed, his arm hooked up to an IV, his face pale and his eyes wild as they watched Lux get wheeled past him.

“Hazza..” She managed to whisper before her eyes fell closed again.

Blackness.

Lux woke up to the dark, and she blinked to adjust her eyes to it, spotting a clock next to her bed that said 2:54AM. There was an IV hooked up to her arm just like Harry's, and she searched around for the button that calls a nurse. Then she remembered seeing Harry when she first came in.

Light.

She shuffled out of bed slowly, wondering who exactly put her in this hospital gown. She wheeled her IV out of the corner and tugged it along with her, feeling a little woozy still but not enough to keep her away from him. Lux eyed the nurse that was doing paperwork a few desks down the hall from her, and she quietly began to creep out of the room and toward where she thought Harry was.

“They warned me about you two.” The nurse chuckled, not even looking up from her papers.

Lux turned around slowly and quirked an eyebrow, staying frozen like a deer in headlights.

“Said you two couldn't be kept apart. I've already taken the boy back to his room 3 times tonight.”

“He's okay?” Lux asked, feeling a wave of relief flow through her body.

“You were both severely dehydrated, him more than you. I'd say he's been avoiding food and water for the past week or so. When was the last time you ate?” She asked and Lux sighed, shrugging.

“About 4 days ago..” She frowned, thinking back to that moment in the studio when her stomach twisted into a knot. It hasn't untwisted since. How could she possibly think about eating?

“I understand you're in a singing competition, a pretty big one... I know you're probably under a lot of pressure and have a lot on your mind, but you must remember to eat and drink plenty of water. That's an order, now. You'll be on fluids overnight and then probably released tomorrow. He's a different story. His body was shutting down from not getting any fluids, he's in much worse condition than you. He'll probably be on fluids and on watch for a few days.” The nurse explained, walking over to Lux and looking down at a chart as she spoke.

“Technically, I'm not supposed to share his condition with any non-family members, but...” the nurse sighed softly, looking up at Lux, “that boy seems like he would crawl on all fours through broken glass to get to you if he had to. You obviously are of some importance to him, and I'm sure he'd want you to know that after some rest and fluids, he'll be just fine. There's no need to worry about him.”

“I can't help but worry about him.” Lux whispered, looking down at her feet.

“You want to see him, don't you?” The nurse sighed again, staring at Lux for a second before gesturing down the hall. “Down the hall, take a left, last door on the right. I didn't tell you this.”

“Thank you, thank you, thank you!” Lux beamed at her, turning and heading down the hall slowly.

Lux waited until she was safely around the corner to pick up her pace, trying to reach his room as fast as possible. But when she got there, she froze at the door, unable to turn the knob and enter. They were in the hospital because of each other, because they were so stressed about each other that they stopped eating and drinking. Lux was the reason Harry was laying in that bed, she's the reason he was laying on that floor earlier. How is it that she could love him so much and yet still cause him pain? How does something that feels so right be the same thing that causes her to cry at night?

What if this isn't how its supposed to be? Love shouldn't be this hard.

Just as she was going to turn around and leave him to rest, the door began to open slowly.

“Lux..”

Harry looked better, his face wasn't as pale and his eyes weren't all wild, but he looked tired.

“I've been trying to get to you all night. How did you get past all the nurses?” He grabbed her arm tightly, pulling her into his room and shutting the door behind them.

“I walked.” She shrugged, feeling her eyes well up with tears already. She was hoping this wouldn't happen so quickly, but he always made her come undone.

“Luxie.” He whispered, searching her teary eyes, grabbing both of her arms softly and pulling her to him. Her face buried into his matching hospital gown, inhaling to try and catch his scent but he didn't smell familiar. His lips were against her head, buried in her hair, moving down over her forehead and the side of her face. They were chapped, rough against her skin, but she didn't care. He moved over her tears, kissing them off her skin and wetting his lips.

“I don't know if I can do this anymore.” She said weakly, pushing her hair back from her face and wiping her cheeks of any traces of tears. “I... I can't close my eyes without picturing you.. with her..”

“Lux..” His breathing got heavier, and she frowned as she led him to sit down on his hospital bed.

“It didn't mean anything. It was just sex, and I know I sound like a right arse sayin' this, but it's true. It was just sex. I wasn't thinking with my head, I was thinking with my cock. I never meant to hurt you, that's the last thing I wanted to do... and I can't believe how cliché I sound right now..”

He buried his face in his hands, sighing heavily and shaking his head slowly. “I'm so angry with myself, Lux. I can't close my eyes for even a second without seeing your face when I told you. I hate to say this but... I knew I would do this. I knew from the beginning that I would fuck this up. Nothing good ever stays with me. Since I met you, I've been waiting for you to give up on me.”

“Don't pull that pity card with me, Styles. If you didn't want to hurt me, you didn't have to. You acted selfishly and I have absolutely no sympathy for you.” Lux wanted to sound angry but she was so tired that she could barely manage a glare in his direction.

And he was so beautiful, staring at her with his tilted head and his messy curls. She could see how he got away with so many naughty things without consequences, all he had to do was bat those eyes and show off those dimples and he was free to go. It wouldn't work on Lux, though.

It was something he loved about her, that she called him out on all his shit.

“Look, I don't want to fight with you. Not here... not when we're both so exhausted.” She sighed heavily, “But don't for one minute think you're off the hook. My entire chest feels like it's going to explode because of what you did to my heart. I just needed to see you and make sure you were okay and now I'm gonna go back to my own room and... cry.”

“Don't leave.” He whispered, his voice cracking slightly. “Please, I've been waiting to see you all night. Please, stay with me for a little while.”

“I..” She paused, “I can't. The more I look at you, the more I..forgive you..”

“Luxie,” he grabbed her hand tightly as she turned to the door, ready to walk out. “don't you love me?”

A noise escaped her throat, sort of a strangled cry that she choked back, clapping her hand over her mouth. She didn't think he heard her say that, he was half-conscious!

She turned around with tears in her eyes, blinking furiously to keep them from falling.

“Yeah,” She admitted in a whisper, catching his eyes. They sparkled even under the ugly fluorescent lights. “yeah, I do. That's the thing, Harry. I'm thoroughly, insanely, stupidly in love with you and you... well, you 'like me a lot', isn't that right? Which is why you had sex with someone else while I haven't even considered being with anyone else but you. I love you, I don't know how or when it happened, but it did and it hurts so much to love you when you're seemingly incapable of loving me back. So I need to go, and you need to stand here and watch me do so.”

Lux's eyes stayed locked with his for a long moment after her speech, looking for some kind of reaction. What reaction, she wasn't sure, but there was nothing. Blank stare. His eyes no longer sparkled under the lights, they looked dull and lifeless. She knew what that stare meant, it meant that he got her message loud and clear, and from now on he would leave her alone. It was time for him to run away from her, just as she expected.

Because nothing scares Harry more than love, and that was all Lux had to offer him.
