50. Future

“What’s going to happen to me?”

Everyone in the room ignored Lux, like they’ve been doing for the past 15 minutes. She sighed heavily and buried her face in her hands, leaning her elbows against the table.

This has been the best and worst night of her life, a total blessing and then a total nightmare. And now nobody will even answer her question. At this point, she wished someone would just come yell at her instead of everyone whispering and giving her disappointed looks.

“Am I invisible?” She mumbled, looking back up at all the producers, who still ignored her.

Mike walked in and over to Alexa, saying something to her quietly before her eyes looked up, past Lux. She would have turned around if she didn’t already know it was Harry standing behind her.

“Answer her question.” He demanded, yanking out the chair next to her and plopping down into it. His hand immediately pressed into her leg, but she brushed it off, feeling sick as she did so. He can’t possibly expect her to touch him in front of all these people who were judging them. Not with her career at stake right now. Not until she knows for sure what’s going to happen to her.

“We’re discussing it. Be patient, Lux.” Mike said softly, frowning over at her.

Same disappointment, same sad frown. Lux let everybody down.

“Babe,” Harry whispered, leaning his head in close to hers so nobody else would hear him. “look at me.” His voice was soft, but demanding, making her look up immediately.

Her eyes were dead, the sparkle in them gone, even though she was looking at the one person who always made it appear. It was just gone. It was like someone turned off the light inside of her, turning her dark and cold. He felt fear for the first time around her.

“I won’t let anything happen to you,” He whispered, shaking his head, “ever.”

“You can’t stop this.” She said, her voice monotoned.

“No, I can’t.” He confirmed, frowning. “But I can protect you from all the backlash you’ll receive out there.” He gestured to the front door, referring to the real world outside of this house.

“I deserve the backlash.” She whispered, looking down at her hands. “I deserve whatever comes to me. I should have..” Her voice trailed off, and she shook her head slowly.

She didn’t want to say something she would regret later on.

“You should have left me.” He finished her sentence, swallowing hard. It hurt so bad.

Lux looked up suddenly, fire blazing in her eyes. “I will never regret you.”

Finally, he got some type of emotion out of her. He was beginning to think she was turning into a zombie. He slid his hand over to her, palm facing upwards, his eyes never leaving hers. She looked down at his hand for a second, before slowly placing her hand in his.

Their eyes locked, her fire still blazing, her palm hot in his. He pulled it to his mouth and kissed each one of her fingers, down the inside of her palm to her wrist. He kissed it softly as he put her hand on his cheek, nuzzling into it as he stared up at her.

“Lux,” Mike started to speak, and they both jumped out of their own world. She dropped her hand from his cheek, but it landed in his lap and he scooped it up, holding it tightly.

“Yes?” Her voice was strong, calm, and she sat straight with her shoulders back and her head held high. She was holding it together, and Harry never felt so proud.

“As you know, there was a romance ban within the competition. You and Harry broke that ban, and as much as it hurts us to do this, we have to let you go. We tried to figure out a way around this, but there is nothing we can do. You have to go home.” He said softly, watching all the producer’s avoid eye contact as he spoke. Everyone was so sad.

“I understand.” Lux said quietly, but her voice broke this time.

Harry was biting his tongue hard to stop himself from speaking, and he tasted blood in his mouth. He squeezed her hand tightly, watching his fingers turn white.

“We are going to do something to help you though.” Mike’s eyes flickered over to Harry, and Lux caught it instantly. Her eyebrows furrowed together, “When we release the statement, we’re going to tell them that you withdrew from the competition to have vocal surgery.”

“But you’d be lying.” She said softly, “Why would you lie?”

“Because if it gets out that you were having a secret relationship with Harry, your world as you know it will crumble.” Mike said, sighing. He shook his head, sharing another look with Harry. “The press, the fans, everyone will lash out at you. They won’t blame Harry for this, this will be all your fault. If we can do one thing for you, we want to prevent that from happening.”

“Why would you want to help me? I broke all your rules.” Lux questioned, wiping a tear from under her eye.

“You have a damn good voice, Lux.” Alexa said, “Your future doesn’t deserve to be diminished because you fell in love with a boy. We believed in you, everyone believed in you.”

“And I let everyone down!” She cried out, finally breaking down and letting tears stream over her cheeks. “I don’t deserve any special treatment just because I have a good voice. I don’t want any special treatment.”

“But you do, Lux.” Alexa said softly, grabbing onto Lux’s hand. “You deserve this.”

“You worked damn hard. If we could change the rules entirely, we would, but for now this is all we can offer you. Please, take it and just say thank you.” Mike said, pushing his glasses up. Everyone was quiet for a moment, listening to Lux sniffle and wipe her cheeks.

She heaved out a long sigh, looking from Alexa to Mike, nodding. “Thank you.”

Everyone’s shoulders visibly relaxed, and they all tried to force smiles her way.

“The press release goes out tomorrow morning. You have a flight back to New York tomorrow night.” Mike said, standing up. “Get some sleep, we’ll talk in the morning.”

“Can I..” Harry began, but Alexa’s laughter cut him off.

“Yes, Harry. You can stay with Lux. God, just please don’t conceive a child in this house.”

“Alexa!” Mike tried to hold back his laugh, his eyes widening at her.

“Oh, should we all just pretend its not happening?!” She asked, waving her arms around.

Everyone began to chatter, voices spilling over other voices as they all filed out of the room.

The door clicked behind the last person, leaving just Lux and Harry sitting alone.

“Did you have anything to do with this?” She asked softly, refusing to look at him.

Harry eyed her warily, wondering for a moment if he should lie to her.

“Yes.” He said finally, admitting the truth. He told her he would save her.

She stayed silent for a long time, staring down at the table, her fists clenched.

"Are you upset about it? Because I just wanted to help-"

“I never wanted your help!” She snapped, looking up at him finally. “Why couldn’t you just let me handle this?? Why?! Now I look like a bratty child whose boyfriend has to use his fucking connections to save her ass! I would have rather chewed off my own arm than ask anyone for special treatment here. Do you know how this makes me look?”

“I was protecting you, Lux! Just shut up and take it, bloody hell!” Harry snapped back, “You don’t know how fucking helpless I felt, I’m the one who got you into this situation in the first place, I had to do something to help get you out!”

“No, I’m the one who got myself into this situation because I didn’t fucking stay away from you like I should have!” She said as she stood up, turning toward the door to leave. He flew out of his chair and grabbed her arm, pulling her back to him.

She shook him off and shoved against his chest, and he stood there, breathing heavily as her tiny fists pounded against his chest, tears streaming down her face. He grabbed her wrists to stop her, but all she did was push him away again and grab for the door.

Harry wrapped his arms around hers, holding them to her side so she couldn’t move them. She fought against his grip wildly, shouting at him now. “I hate you, I hate you!!”

“I love you.” He whispered to her, ignoring her words, holding her tighter, restraining her. Lux’s knees gave out and she fought to catch her breath, sobbing loudly as he held her up, her legs limp beneath her body. He lowered them both to the floor, cradling her body against his, smoothing her hair down. “I love you.”

She sobbed into his shoulder, her body shaking against his as she let it all out.

“I’m sorry…” She cried, wrapping her arms around his neck tightly, pressing her face into his curls. He hugged her back even tighter, shaking his head, ignoring her apology.

“I didn’t mean it, I swear, I didn’t mean it..” She pulled back and held his face in her hands, looking at him with his favorite face on. Red wet cheeks, puffy lips, teary eyes. Her crying face always made him smile. Harry shushed her, grabbing the back of her neck and pulling her forehead down to his lips.

“You never need to apologize to me for anything.” He said quietly.

Lux’s hands grasped his sweater tightly, her hands making fists around the material as she cried again. “I don’t want to go home. I’m not ready for this.”

He sighed softly, petting her hair down gently. “Me either.”

“What are we going to do, Harry?” She asked, looking to him desperately for unknown answers. The way she said “we”, the way she included him in her life, meshing them together as one, it was the first time that he looked at her and saw not only a present…but a future, as well. He looked down at her and their possible future together flashed before his eyes. Love, marriage, babies… divorce…custody battles…hatred.

He shook his head, trying to rid those thoughts of his mind. They’re both so young, he doesn’t need to worry about this shit, but of course he’s going to. He’s looking for any reason to leave Lux behind so she can move on with her life. He knows its the only way she’ll become a success on her own, without his help or his name guiding her along.

Harry’s first instinct, as always in these types of situations, was to pull away from her. He knew if he did that with Lux, it would only upset and confuse her, and she doesn’t need that right now. So although he had already decided what their future together held, he smiled at her. “We’ll be okay, you know that right? No matter what, we’ll always find a way back to each other.”

Her brows pulled together, confusion setting in for a moment, but he pressed his lips to hers to silence any questions that formed on her tongue. She kissed him back, frowning as he pulled away, but she didn’t say anything, simply curled back into his body.

With a heavy heart, he wrapped his arms around her and held her tight, because he knew that when tomorrow comes, their relationship as they both know it - will be changed forever.
