12. Care

“Do you want to go out today?”

Lux looked up slowly, surprised to see Zayn at her door. He smiled brightly, raising his eyebrows and entering her room. He sat down next to her, wrapping his arm around her shoulders in a half hug.

“I think you and I need to go out today. It's sunny, its hot, we're in LA, I need someone to go shopping with me and help me pick out stuff..” He trailed off, listening to her laugh at him.

“You had me at 'sunny'.” Lux whispered, bumping his shoulder with her own. He stared down at her for a long time, a smile lightly placed on his lips, and she briefly wondered what they tasted like.

“Right then. Let's go, shall we?” He jerked up, moving away from her quickly, and she sighed, standing anyways.

“I was thinking we could go to lunch afterwards, but that would classify as a date to the magazines and the fans, so..” Zayn sighed, turning to watch Lux follow him out of the room. His eyes swept over her body slowly, and she felt a shiver run up her spine as they did.

“What?” She asked, looking down at her outfit when he continued to stare. “Should I change?”

She was wearing pretty skimpy shorts, a white tank top that allowed her boobs to peek over just enough, and old brown cowboy boots. Maybe this isn't what LA girls shop in, but it's what she shops in.

“No.” He smiled, shaking his head. “You look beautiful.”

“Funny,” She smiled, walking down the stairs in front of him. “nobody tells me that unless I'm all dressed up. Especially not in old shorts and cowboy boots.”

“I think you would look beautiful wearing a brown sack, love.” Zayn whispered, running his fingers through her hair lightly, brushing against the nape of her neck.

Lux looked up at him as he did this, their eyes locking solidly and fearlessly, and she still felt shivers run up her spine again, but her stomach didn't flutter around and her heart didn't race. She wished it would. He's so good looking and she hasn't had sex in months, so any touch from him will send shivers up and down her whole body. Any touch from any man would probably do so right now.

“What in the bloody hell is going on?” Harry's voice was slightly louder than it should have been, which he realized too late to do anything about.

Zayn's hand snapped back from her neck so fast he nearly yanked her hair out with his fingers. Her eyes widened as she looked from him to Harry, feeling an insane amount of tension rising.

“You know what? Maybe we should do this another time..” Zayn whispered to her, sighing heavily.

“Um,” Lux's eyebrows pulled together. “Oh..ok..”

Harry watched Zayn turn and go back up the stairs slowly, turning and glancing back a few times before disappearing from Lux's sight. She turned back around to look at Harry, who had his arms folded across his chest and his eyebrows raised.

“What did I tell you? Stay away from my mates, Lux.” He stated sternly, as if she were a child.

She whispered, “Harry, you don't get to tell me what to do.”

“I do when it comes to them.” He said, “That's my family, and I don't want you swooping in and breaking any of their hearts.” He turned to walk away, but only got a few steps when she spoke, saying something that he wasn't expecting, something that made his heart clench up in sadness.

“Is that what happened to you? Is that why you're so cold?”

Harry stopped walking, lowering his head slightly as he waited for her to continue.

“So you're not going to tell me anything, huh? So someone broke your heart, and now you think all women are out to get you and your friends? You should know better, you're not a child and I won't treat you like one.” Lux wanted to yell at him, but tried to keep her voice at a controlled level. She didn't want him to see her upset again.

He inhaled sharply, feeling his heart begin to beat harder and almost.. slower as he turned to face her, looking down into her eyes. They were on fire, her eyes, blazing darker than he's ever seen before. He wanted to touch her eyelids and see if they were hot, the fire in her eyes was so fierce. He held back.

“What did you just say?” He murmured, feeling his fingers shake as they itched to touch her.

“I said that I won't treat you like a child, Harry. You're a grown man.” She said passionately.

Harry gave into his temptation, reaching his fingertips up to her lips, touching them softly. Her head tilted in confusion, but she didn't stop him as he let his fingers dance along her cheeks, up to her eyes. Lux felt her stomach flutter when he touched her eyelashes, moving to shut her eyes for her, and then he touched her eyelids gently as well.

He removed his fingers slowly, watching her eyes flutter open and her eyes focus on his face immediately. He hadn't realized he was so close to her, but he was, his face within inches of hers.

“She treated me like a child..” He heard himself murmur, and then he snapped his mouth shut and backed away from her. Harry wasn't supposed to say that, he wasn't supposed to say anything. He didn't want this with Lux. He just wanted everything in his heart to go away.

“What?” She eyed him in confusion, “Who did?”

“Nothing. Nobody. Go out with Zayn if you want. Tell him I don't care.” His voice was hard, tense, like he was having trouble saying the words that were coming out of his mouth.

“Harry..” Lux stepped toward him as if she were going to comfort him, and he threw his hands up.

“I don't care about you or what you do. I don't.” He said once more before turning and walking off as quickly as possible without running.

“HARRY EDWARD STYLES!” She yelled out, running after him.

She was not going to let him do this to her, say stupid cryptic things and then run off. No way.

“Harry!” She called out again, following him down the second flight of stairs and into the studio.

He turned around, staring at her with wide eyes, “Just leave me alone! I don't care what you have to say, and I don't care about you!”

“I didn't ask you to care about me.” Lux whispered, hoping to calm him by not yelling back.

“Then what the bloody hell do you want with me?! Huh? Why are you here??” He was still yelling, waving his arms around, his eyes wild.

“I want you to..” She paused, getting lost in his eyes for a second. “Come here.”

She grabbed him by the arm and sat him down on the big comfortable couch that was against one of the studio's walls. He stood right back up, and she pushed him down again.

“I don't want to sit down, Lux!” He said, standing up once more, but she planted her hands on his shoulders and shoved him back down, straddling his lap before he could stand again.

He looked shocked by her actions, watching her with wide eyes as she grabbed his face in both of her hands and made him look into her eyes. She stared for a long moment, her eyes searching his for some kind of feeling other than hatred and coldness. All she could find was pain within him.

“I don't care about you.” He said again, but this time his voice was a cracked whisper. She nodded.

“I know you don't.” She whispered back, still nodding.

He dropped his eyes to look at her lips, and she watched his tongue poke out and swipe over his bottom lip. She wanted to take it between her teeth and nibble on it, and the desire to do so was so overwhelming that she found herself leaning into him slightly.

His eyes met hers again, his hands moving up along her bare thighs, up over her shorts until they rested on her hips firmly. He squeezed softly, moving his fingertips underneath the hem of her shirt to touch the warm skin of her lower back. He saw her shiver visibly, and he would have smiled smugly if he weren't so shocked that this was actually happening.

Then the door opened. “-and I was thinking about doing... woah. Uh....”

It was Sara, Lux's roommate and Niall, who was her mentor. They stood in the doorway of the studio, obviously looking for some time to work on Sara's song, and instead they found Lux straddling Harry as if she were riding a horse, cowboy boots and all.

In a flash, Harry had lifted Lux by her hips and placed her on her feet, standing up as well and walking out with only a pat to Niall's shoulder. Lux stared at them, and they stared back, and she laughed nervously.

“Uhh...” She paused, “That wasn't nearly as scandalous as it looked.”

“Ride 'em, cowgirl!” Sara said with a laugh, causing Niall to smile and cover his mouth to hide his own laugh. Lux chuckled too, feeling her face heat up as she squeezed past them.

Lux groaned in embarrassment, I am so throwing these boots out.
