40. Always

They moved from the pool into the house when the air got a chill and he noticed her shivering. He wrapped her in a warm towel before diving to the bottom of the pool to retrieve her ruined dress and undergarments, even though she insisted that he leave them. He wanted to get them for her.

After walking her to her bedroom, he left to dry himself off and get her something hot to keep her warm. Harry doesn't quite remember the last time he wanted to take care of someone so badly. He doesn't think there's ever been a time when he felt sick when he walked away from someone, even if it was just for a few minutes. He wanted to be attached to her side at all times.

While he was in the kitchen in his sweats, making hot tea for Lux, someone came up behind him and slapped him lightly on the bum. He laughed when he turned around and saw Louis, not surprised by his actions.

“Hazza, you've disappeared from my life. I hope you're enjoying your cat.” Louis stated, hopping up onto the counter and smirking down at Harry, who laughed at the reference to an incident that happened to him on his own X-Factor.

“I am quite enjoying it, thanks.” Harry grinned over his shoulder at him, shrugging.

“Are we keeping this one? Luxie will be our new pet, yea?” He laughed softly, picking up an apple from a fruit bowl and taking a bite. Harry smiled lightly, turning around to look at his best mate.

“I'm going to keep her as long as she lets me.”

Louis raised his eyebrows and paused with the apple still raised to his mouth, his lips parted to take a bite. He lowered the apple slowly and tilted his head to one side, staring down at Harry.

“Oh no.” He mumbled, sighing heavily. “You love her, don't you?”

“Oh no? Why is that a reason for 'oh no'?” Harry asked, widening his eyes.

Louis sighed, staring at Harry for a second longer before jumping down off the counter to stand face-to-face with him. “It's just a 'oh no' because long distance relationships suck and you've never dealt with one before. Lux lives in a different country, Haz... it's, it's just not gonna be easy, mate.”

“I haven't felt like this about someone in a long time, Lou. I tried to not love her because I know one day we won't be together every day and I know that day is going to suck.... but I can't stop. I might as well be happy with her as long as I can, and when the day comes that we have to go our separate ways, we'll deal with it. Together. I'm trying not to think about it right now. As long as she continues to do well in the competition, I'll still have plenty of time with her.” He finished up with the tea, lifting the two hot mugs into his hands and turning to look at Louis before he left.

Lou stood there and stared at him before smiling lightly, nodding a little bit. “I get it, mate. Just don't want anyone to get hurt here..especially you.”

Harry put his mugs down and hugged his best friend, burying his face into Lou's shoulder as Louis rubbed his back softly. He felt bad that he's been spending all his time with Lux or locked up in his bedroom being moody, so he hasn't been spending any time with his bandmates.

“I'll be alright, boo bear. Don't you worry.” Harry pulled back and smiled at him, watching him laugh lightly before they released each other. Harry picked the mugs back up and turned to leave the kitchen, but stopped when he saw Lux leaning against the door frame, smirking lightly.

“I didn't know men could be so affectionate with one another until I met you two.” She said softly, her voice slightly hoarse. Harry stepped over to her quickly after he heard her speak, handing her one of the mugs before grabbing her elbow and pulling her into the kitchen further.

“Open your mouth.” He ordered, and she scrunched her eyebrows before doing so.

“Stick out your tongue, girly.” Louis said in a creepy voice, wiggling his eyebrows. Lux laughed as she did what she was told, looking at them both as they tried to look at her tonsils in unison.

“Your throat is bright red. Is it tender?” Harry whispered, reaching one hand up to touch her throat lightly. Lux nodded a little bit, shrugging.

“Kind of. I'm sure it will be okay tomorrow.” She whispered and they both sighed.

“That's what they all think. No more talking for you until you have to sing. Got that? None. Whatsoever.” Louis ordered and Harry nodded along with these instructions.

“But-..”

“No.” They said in unison.

“I have-..”

“NO.” They repeated, and she huffed out a sigh, nodding again.

“Just drink your tea and go to bed, love. That's right, there ya go.” Louis said, guiding her mug of tea up to her lips and watching her take a long sip.

“C'mon, Luxie. You need some sleep.” Harry whispered to her, beginning to lead her out.

“Happy Birthday, by the way.” Louis said before they could exit, and Harry turned to him with a smile. He ran back and hugged him again, tighter this time.

“And here I thought you'd forgotten!” Harry said, smiling brightly.

“Never, sweet cheeks!” Louis gasped, shaking his head vigorously.

“Alright you two, get outta here.” Lou said finally, sighing softly.

Lux and Harry both grinned before moving to the door once again.

“Oi, Lux..” He called out, and she felt Harry's eyes on her as she turned around.

“Take care of him.” Louis said softly, his voice taking on a rare serious tone.

Lux smiled softly at his concern for his best friend, nodding slowly as she went to give him a hug as well. As she wrapped her arms around his torso, she leaned her mouth close to his ear, and whispered one last word to him before she'd have to stop speaking completely.

“Always.”
