See Through

Olivia Adams isn't alive, but she isn't dead either. Somewhere between heaven and hell lies perpetual purgatory, and she's inevitably stuck in it. There's unfinished business to be tended to, but the question of what it is remains unanswered. She walks the streets of New York City with tears in her eyes, but nobody notices the girl that barely exists. Until a beautiful day. Niall Horan has found her, and he sees and feels and hears her. She's falling in love with him, even though she's frightened since her last lover took her very own life. Through Niall, Olivia is able to reconnect with her sister, Jessi, and exist as if she never left. But, what happens when a dark mass tries to ruin any chance Olivia has of living again? Will the mass get to her, allowing her spirit to move on? Will she be able to fight it off long enough to become human again? Or, will she forever remain see through?

13. I Will Fight This

I get of the plane at LAX, seeing Louis there to pick me up. He helps me with my luggage and we climb into the backseat of a black subaru. “So tell me again why you're picking me up instead of Niall,” I say to him.

“He's sick,” he replies, glancing out the window. “Love sick.”

“I see.”

“You don't act very happy about it.”

“It's complicated, Lou,” I say through clenched teeth. “I thought we had something. But, he has obvious feelings for Olivia, and I'm not going to take that away from her. I can have any other guy in the world...she can only have him.”

I smile and he returns it as he places his hand on mine. “You're strong,” he says simply.

“I like to think so. This whole thing is so weird. Olivia becoming human and things...”

“I don't think it's weird. I believe in the paranormal, always have.”

“But the black mass..” He rubs my hand as I feel myself tearing up. “It'll ruin any chance she has of being normal. We can't let it get to her. I wish I knew how to stop it.” He raises a gentle hand and wipes a tear from my eye. His touch is captivating, entrancing, like nothing could compare to it, million soft hands wouldn't be the same as his. “Thanks,” I whisper.

“Anytime love. Did Niall tell you Olivia is sleeping now?”

“Apparently a few days ago she said she was tired, and she just went to sleep. Just like that.”

“I guess he failed to mention that,” I reply, thoughts wondering. “I know what it means. She's changing. Do you think so?”

“I hope she is...for your sake. Is that other entity still bothering you?”

“Nope. It just vanished I guess. I do feel safer though, now that I'm with one of the guys,” I reply and nudge him playfully.

He laughs back and says, “don't worry, I'll protect you.”

We pull into the hotel parking garage and make our way up to the extravagant suite the guys are staying in. First I see there's black couches and a crystal chandelier hanging from the ceiling, dangling there gracefully like a star. Everything is so pristine, clean, and overwhelmingly fancy. “Good lord!” I say aloud as he shows me the rest of the suite. “This place is incredible.”

“And expensive,” Louis replies with a laugh. “But we can manage. We'll have to wait for the guys to come back to find out where you'll be sleeping. Unless you want to room with me. Liam and Lena are sharing a room, Zayn and Perrie are sharing, and Harry is staying with Niall. I'm the only one who has extra space.”

I think about this for a moment, thinking maybe it's a bad idea, but I don't have really anything to lose and accept his offer. “That's fine,” I say, collapsing onto the cusiony, relaxing couch. “But I have to warn you, I'm a bit of a snorer.”

“I am too,” he replies, joining me. “Maybe we'll balance each other out.”

I giggle and look into his eyes for a brief moment. “Why the sudden change towards me?” I ask him, merely curious. “You used to ignore me, and when you did talk to me you were kind of rude. Now you're being all sweet and funny.”

“Well, I was bitter towards everyone after Eleanor and I broke up. Don't take it personally.”

“What happened between you two?”

“We just wanted different things. She was ready to settle down and start a family, and didn't want me to go on tour this year. I didn't want to give up my career. My life.”

I feel bad for the poor guy. He seems genuinely heartbroken by her, but I can also tell he's slowly moving on. “I'm so sorry,” I say.

“Don't be sorry. It just wasn't meant to be.” He smiles half-heartedly. “And some of my being rude might have been because I was a little jealous, of Niall that is.”

“Because he had you AND Olivia, and I had no one.”

The door of the suite swings open and Niall, Liam, and Lena come in holding bags from Burger King. “Whaddup Jess!” Liam yells, jumping over the couch and onto my lap. “We got you food.”

“Get off me, I can't breathe!” I laugh, shoving him off.

“Liam, you idiot,” I hear a voice say, familiar and warm. Olivia. “Ignore him, Jess, he's been hyper all damn day. Nearly drove Lena crazy.”

“It's true,” Lena replies to the voice. “I made the mistake of buying him coffee.”

“You're all jealous!” Liam shouts. “Of my sexyness and responsible charm!”

“Yeah that's it,” I say, laughing my butt off at this new Liam I've caught sight of. “Where's Harry and Zayn?”

Liam shrugs, as does Lena. I then turn to Niall who speaks up, “Zayn and Perrie went out to spend time, and with Andrea.” I feel rage in the pit of my stomach.

“She's here!?”

“Calm down, Jessi,” I hear Olivia say. “If doesn't take your word for things, she's no friend of yours.”

I'm so pissed off I can hardly think. I brought Andrea into this mess, but I didn't give her permission to call me a liar and accuse Olivia of torturing me. Olivia's right. She's no friend of mine, despite the years we've spent being so. “I guess it's her prerogative.” I sigh and rest my head on one of the zebra print pillows.

Later that night, as I lay in bed with insomnia, I hear Louis shivering on the floor. I climb out from under the covers and peer over the edge of the bed at him. “Louis William Tomlinson!” I say, half-shouting. “Get in this bed right now before you catch a cold.”

He looks up at me in agony. “I'm fine on the floor. It's not that cold in here.” I give him a 'yeah right' look and he sighs. “I don't want to make you uncomfortable, but thanks for the offer.”

“It wasn't an offer, it was an order. Don't make me come down there and get you.”

He rises to his feet and picks up his pillows. “Like you could,” he says with a laugh. I scoot over to the left side of the bed and feel is cold body slide in next to me. Surprisingly, I'm not uncomfortable in the least bit. I'm actually pretty comfy feeling him snuggling up close to me to get warm. Our faces are close, but I try my best not to send him any signals of what I'm thinking.

“Better?” I ask.

“Much. Thank you.”

“Not a problem. You're welcome.”

We lay in silence for minutes on end, and sleep is not exactly in my schedule tonight. I glance over at him briefly to find his eyes wide open, staring at me. “What?” I whisper with a slight giggle.

“You're beautiful in the dark.”

“That's kind of insulting,” I reply laughing again. “Am I not when the lights are on?”

“No. In the lights, you're drop dead gorgeous.”

“You're not so bad yourself,” I reply.

Jessi, what have you gotten yourself into? I feel his face getting closer, and our lips brush against each other subtly. The kiss is easy and transfixing. Natural, so I go with it and soon find myself so wrapped up in his arms that the thought of escaping is the farthest thing from my mind. I lean into his kiss a little harder and his hands run down my waist, fiddling with string on my sleep pants.

This night is something I never wanted to happen, until it did.

“Do you hear that?” I ask Harry, fixed on the noise I hear coming from one of the other bedrooms. I glance around the room for Olivia, and then remember she's sleeping on the couch. “Sounds like somebody is...” I don't finish the sentence, but Harry does.

“It sounds like somebody's getting in on,” he laughs. “Go Liam!”

“How do you know it's Liam?”

“Because Zayn and Perrie haven't come back yet. They're still out. It's either Liam and Lena, or Jessi and Louis. Which do you think?”

“Jessi would never.”

“Exactly,” he says. “Liam's gettin' it.”

The next morning I wake to the smell of pancakes and bacon, instantly making me jump from the bed with hunger grumbling in my stomach. I hear the faint sound of music playing, and find Jessi in the kitchen dancing around to What Makes You Beautiful.

“Morning,” I laugh, interrupting her little dance party.

She shrieks and grabs her chest. “Oh my god! You scared the crap out of me!” She seems surprisingly perky this morning, all smiles and giddiness. “You hungry?” She asks, sliding a batch of pancakes onto a big plate on the counter.

“Very, thanks.” I sit grab a plate of food and sit down at the table. Soon, the guys start pouring out of their rooms. They excitedly get their food and join me.

“What time did you get in last night?” Harry asks Zayn and Perrie.

“About four,” Perrie laughs. “We lost track of time.”

“Told you,” Harry whispers to me.

“These are delicious,” Louis says to Jessi. “You're a great cook.”

“Thank you,” she smiles, grinning from ear-to-ear. He smirks back at her and gazes into her eyes like they're having some secret mind conversation. Finally, Liam and Lena emerge from their room, and Harry doesn't have the strength to keep his damn mouth shut.

“Atta boy, Liam!” he says, nodding to them both.

“What?” he says, a confused look on his face.

“Couldn't help but hear your big finish last night! Bravo!” Liam looks at Lena awkwardly, and she gives him the same look.

“What are you talking about?” she asks in her thick British accent.

Harry laughs and replies, “I heard you guys getting things done in there. Don't hide it.”

Jessi's eyes get big and shoots a knowing look at Louis. “We didn't do anything,” Liam says, fixing himself a plate of breakfast. “You're hearing things.”

“Well, I'm done here,” Louis says and wipes his mouth, stands, and disappears back into his room. Jessi's head falls to her hands, and it becomes obvious why she's in such a great mood. I look around the room for Olivia to see her reaction, but she's no where.

“WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME!” I yell at the mass, inching it's way towards me in the lobby of the hotel.

“Yooo---ouuuuu.” I hear the eeriness from the black and red jumble of electricity and evil. The sound of its voice sends me into shock, and I'm frozen on the spot. It's only fifteen feet away from me this time, something preventing it from getting closer.

“Well you CANNOT have me!” I yell back. “I'll destroy you before you get the chance.”

Whatever it takes, I'm not leaving Niall, and I refuse to leave my sister again. I WILL fight this thing.
