See Through

Olivia Adams isn't alive, but she isn't dead either. Somewhere between heaven and hell lies perpetual purgatory, and she's inevitably stuck in it. There's unfinished business to be tended to, but the question of what it is remains unanswered. She walks the streets of New York City with tears in her eyes, but nobody notices the girl that barely exists. Until a beautiful day. Niall Horan has found her, and he sees and feels and hears her. She's falling in love with him, even though she's frightened since her last lover took her very own life. Through Niall, Olivia is able to reconnect with her sister, Jessi, and exist as if she never left. But, what happens when a dark mass tries to ruin any chance Olivia has of living again? Will the mass get to her, allowing her spirit to move on? Will she be able to fight it off long enough to become human again? Or, will she forever remain see through?

Jessi's POV

“Dad, I'm telling you she's here. She's been with us the entire time! Why don't you believe me?” I try so hard to get through to him but he refuses to believe Olivia isn't gone. Unlike me, he has accepted the fact that she's dead, however, she's not...well, kind of.

“Stop it Jessica!” he spits. “Olivia is dead, gone. You getting involved in this spirit world with this boy is ridiculous, and not to mention dangerous.”

“It's not dangerous, daddy, it's her!” I shout back at him. “She proved it.”

“ENOUGH!” he bellows out in his deep, raspy voice. “Any more talk about Olivia and I'll cut you off completely.”

“Dad...” tears stream down my face in the thoughts that my own father doesn't believe or trust me, “...you can't pay your bills without my help. Don't be like this, please!”

The phone shuts off and I'm left to wallow in self-pity and confusion. Niall's hand traces comforting circles on my back and I let myself go in his arms. “He doesn't believe me,” I cry to him.

“Shhh, it's okay. I'm here,” he whispers. He lifts up my chin to look him in the eyes. “Why don't you and Andrea go get yourselves something pretty to wear tonight. It'll take your mind off things.” I wipe my eyes and smile to him.

I'm lucky to have him right now. Frankly, he's the only person who completely understands my situation. Andrea does in some ways, but he actually sees Olivia and he knows how much it hurts that I can't. I thank God every day for bringing him to me.

“That's a good idea,” I say. He smiles and pulls out his wallet, handing me a platinum visa card. I push it away immediately. “I can't take your money, Niall.”

“Yes, you can. Think of it as a condolence gift.”

I laugh as he slides it back into my hand. “Fine then, but I'm not going to use it. I have money.”

“Just let me do this for you,” he groans. “You deserve it.”

“You've done so much already.”

“But not enough. Buy you and Andrea the prettiest dresses you can find. Besides,” he gets up and smiles before exiting his bedroom. “I can't have you looking crappy at our dinner party. I have a rep to maintain.” He winks as I laugh at his failed humor.

What am I even getting myself into?

Andrea and I decide to shop at JC Penny, where it's not too expensive but not exactly cheap either. She picks out a skinny, form-fitted black halter dress that reveals her busty cleavage, and I go with a subtle yellow strapless, knee-length one that flares out a little at the bottom.

Hopefully we're not over-dressing, but Niall himself is wearing a tuxedo. God, that boy. I'm so looking forward tonight. He keeps saying it's a date, but of course I'm playing it safe and telling him it's not. But actually, I like the idea of this little “date.” Flattered.

“Your total is $134.76,” the cashier says with a smile on her face. I look at Andrea, guilty for taking Niall's card. “Ma'am?” the lady says again. I hand put the card back in my pocket and take out a hundred and two twenties. Niall will never know.

Olivia's POV

It's getting old, hearing him talk about her when it's just us. I'm literally about to blow up. I'm surprised steam hasn't started spewing from my ears yet, but I try to maintain a smile and pretend I don't care.

“She's just so...extraordinary. I can't believe how calm and collected she is,” he gushes.

“Yeah, except when she gets upset.”

“Even then. She's so pretty when she cries...”

“Ew.”

“Oh come on, you know she is,” he replies with a smile. “I can't wait to ask her out tonight.”

I'm appalled, and repulsed and disgusted...UGH. “You're asking her to be your girlfriend!?” I shout, half a question, half a statement. Maybe he can't see my anger...

“No, I'm just asking her on a proper date. Alone, just us two.”

I roll my eyes as I follow him into the lounge with the rest of the guys. “Hey mate,” Liam says as we walk in. “Is your ghosty friend around?” Oops, eyes rolling again. That's starting to become a habit.

“Yeah, she's right here.”

“Good,” Zayn says. “Can you tell her to stop making noises? It's creeping us out.”

I laugh and bang on the wall next to me, watching them jump at the sound. Harry's girlish shriek is probably the funniest, but nothing beats the look on Louis' face. “What's wrong, boys?” Niall says with a laugh. “Ghost got your tongue?”

“That's not funny, Olivia!” Harry yells. I stride over to him and ruffle his hair, snickering as he dodges away from my touch.

“OH MY GOD GET IT OFF ME!!!”

Everyone laughs at him and I'm starting think being see through isn't so bad after all. It's fun to scare the crap out of people, even though it's a bit mean. Harry fixes his hair and I sit down on the floor, listening in on their conversation. Niall, of course, talks about Jessi. Eye roll.

“Tonight, she will be mine,” he declares.

“Oh, Niall's gettin' some!” Louis says with a laugh.

“No, man. Not like that. I have more respect for Jessi than I do for any other girl I've liked. She isn't just some girl I met at a party...she's real.”

The word 'real' lingers in my mind. So that's what's so 'special' about my sister? She's real, and I'm not. I don't quite understand...I thought I found Niall because we were meant to have something, but now, I don't know what to make out of it.

Maybe this is all there is for me. Maybe I'm not meant for anything but being invisible.

Jessi's POV

It's time for the dinner party, and I'm so nervous my palms are sweating and my legs are shaky. I curl Andrea's hair and twist it up into a gorgeous up-do that my hair couldn't pull off if I wanted it to. I only curled mine and left it to fall kindly onto my shoulders and frame around my face.

Taking a deep breath in the mirror, I hear Niall calling from the lounge for us to come on. I put my arm in Andrea's and we enter together, smiling as Niall and Harry both take our hands. “Damn girl,” Harry laughs as he checks Andrea out.

As for Niall, he can't stop staring at me with the biggest grin on his face. “You look amazing,” he says in awe. “So beautiful.”

The dinner party is extravagant to say the least. Amazing food, lots of celebrities and music producers, and on top of that, everyone is dressed to the nines in their best attire. Now, I feel under dressed. “All these people are so fancy,” I say to Niall. “How do you get used to this?”

“Relax,” he says taking my hand in his. “Everyone thinks you're lovely.”

“Really?”

“Of course. Why wouldn't they? You're the most beautiful girl in this room.”

That beautiful accent drowns out all the other voices and the rest of the world disappears when he speaks to me. I want so badly to just kiss him then and there. “You're too sweet,” I say shyly. “It's almost criminal.”

He leans in, only a small space separates our faces. It's happening...

Before our lips touch, a glass spills on the table and red wine spills onto my brand new dress. “Olivia!” Niall yells at the air. “Why did you do that?!”

One things for sure, Olivia definitely didn't want him to kiss me.
