19. What A Night

Zayn POV

I think I said the wrong thing to the little girl. I said that I was Charlotte’s friend and it upset Charlotte. Katie called me over and whispered, “She’s pretty,” and I replied that I thought so too. Katie asked again on the way back if we were friend’s and before I could say that it was complicated Charlotte cut me off.

When we got back Charlotte only talked to me when it had something to do with Katie. Everything that Emilie had filled me in on, kept running through my mind. Then we met up with Belle and Emilie at Nandos because Charlotte had figured out who was Katie’s parents.

I found out where Charlotte lives because we had to drive to her neighborhood. Her and Belle went to drop off Katie and then I saw Charlotte go into a different house. By the time she came back out, she was starting a different car and I was climbing in.

She turned the music up so that I couldn’t possibly explain or apologize. Wordlessly she let me get my car at Nandos and then waited for me to open the door at my flat. After a while she went upstairs – which I’m assuming was to get ready to go out.

While she was in the bathroom I grabbed a shirt from my room and then traveled back downstairs again. Eleanor called my mobile and said they were going to be here in twenty minutes so I said okay. I waited for Charlotte downstairs and she didn’t come down until after the others got here.

“You look stunning,” I complimented her as she came down with a strapless blue dress and black heels. Her make-up was done and her hair was fluffier than normal. She nodded and walked past me.

“Hey guys!” She smiled at the others. They raised their eyebrows at me but I just shrugged and they said hello. Eleanor pulled me to the side.

“How’s it going?” She asked me.

“Well she’s pretty much ignoring me at the moment,” I sighed.

“Maybe she’s hurt. Didn’t you tell me how she went into her house today?” She questioned and I realized how selfish I was being.

“You’re right,” I mumbled. She nodded and went to stand with Louis as Harry came back to walk with me.

“What are you going to do when she gets wasted again?” Harry asked.

“Be there for her,” I shrugged. We continued the walk until we got there where we put our coats in the closet. I walked to the bar and got a beer. I saw Charlotte walk onto the dance floor with a guy but I refused to watch. If she couldn’t handle it then I would be here for her.

One of my friends that I knew came up and said hi to me. We sat and talked for a while as I told her that I thought I was falling for Charlotte. “Watch out. Incoming,” My friend Alyssa said. I turned to see Charlotte walking towards us.

“Charlotte this is my friend Alyssa. Alyssa this is Charlotte,” I introduced them.

“Oh so your another friend?” Charlotte asked Alyssa. Alyssa nodded and excused herself.

“I’m sorry for saying that you were just a friend. But what was I supposed to say with Katie there?” I told Charlotte.

“Nothing. You told the truth,” She snapped and turned. I grabbed her hand and turned her around again to look at me.

“Alyssa is just a friend. And the truth is, I am so jealous of that guy you’ve been dancing with,” I exclaimed. She crossed her arms over her chest.

“Prove it,” She said. I pulled her to me and pressed my lips to hers urgently. It was different than the other times because at the moment we were “normal” people. Instead of pulling away, I took the last sip of my beer and pulled Charlotte on the dance floor with me. A slow dance came on and I put Charlotte’s arms around my neck. She leaned into me and I held her close as we circled slowly.

“Are you drunk?” I asked her when we moved off the dance floor about half an hour longer. She shook her head.

“Just a little tipsy that’s all,” She laughed.

“I’ll take care of you either way,” I told her.

            “I know,” She replied.

“How are you holding up?” I questioned.

“What do you mean?” She responded.

“Well you went into your house today,” I said.

“Oh right. That. I’ve been better,” She told me.

“I’m here for you okay? Don’t shut me out,” I whispered in her ear.

“We’re normal today. Don’t ruin it,” She frowned.

“You’re right.” I answered. I walked to the bar and got two shots for us. “To being normal,” I held up one. She smiled and we clinked them together before finishing off the vodka and slamming the little glasses down on the table.

After a while we were all ready to go. I was slightly drunk, Charlotte was pretty much hammered, and Harry kept falling all over the place. Everyone else seemed decently sober at the very least.

We were walking back when Charlotte’s heel broke. She laughed hysterically as she took the other one off too and threw them both. I scooped her up into my arms and ran the rest of the way to my flat. When we got there she pulled my head down to meet hers. I climbed up the stairs into my room and took off my shirt. When I turned Charlotte had her dress in her hand and was in only undergarments.

“Charlotte we can’t,” I shook my head, but she just smiled as she stumbled forward and I caught her in my arms. “Not when we’re under the influence,” I protested and smacked myself for looking her up and down.

She pulled me by the hand to the bed and I sat down. She climbed in top of me and started to kiss my neck. “No,” I said more forcefully. Tears watered in her eyes.

“You don’t want me?” She cried.

“Not tonight. We can’t tonight. Let’s go to sleep love,” I told her, trying to get her to calm down. I slid on the opposite side of the bed from her but she just followed me and cuddled close. “Good night,” I kissed her forehead.
