6. The "Switch"

Charlotte POV

I was so tired of everything. I was tired of keeping secrets. I was tired of reality. I was tired of putting up a brave front. And most of all, I was tired of living the way I was living. So I let Zayn talk me out of not cutting with the razor, and then took a chance by letting him hold me.

When we got back downstairs I was biting my lips to keep from doing anything. But I was too weak so I got up and walked into the kitchen to grab the knife from before. Before I could grab the knife though, Zayn had pulled me towards him again.

I didn't have the strength to fight Zayn. He said he wouldn't give up on me and I found that hard to believe. Zayn just held me in a hug for a while. I gripped to him because when I touched him I felt something. I wasn't sure if it was positive or negative yet but any feeling helped me. As I had told Eleanor, Zayn reminded me of someone I used to know. He was awful; part of a dark secret.

         "You're making a big mistake," I whispered.

"And how is that?" He asked, forcing humor into his voice. I just shook my head, trying to hide it in his chest. "So are you okay with physical contact with me now?" He questioned.

"I'm still trying to figure that out," I answered.

"Who is the person I remind you of that hurt you?" Zayn inquired.

"He used to be someone special to me. But things would go wrong in so many ways. And he uh broke my...heart," I lied. The guy hadn't broken my heart. He had broken my wrist because he was an abuser and had abused me.

"I wouldn't do that to you, you know," He told me.

"Well thanks I guess," I replied. During the movie Zayn and I would have times where our gazes locked. It was a nice moment but I thought that's all that it was - a moment. Zayn shifted a little so that almost all of my weight was on him.

"Are you hungry?" He asked. I shook my head no.

           "I'm just tired," I said.

"I don;t know what to do with you. With all of the sharp objects in this house and the condition you're in..." He trailed off.

"What do you mean the condition I'm in?" I snapped standing flat on my feet. I got a burst of strength.

"Easy love," He said softly. I crossed my arms over my chest, waiting for an explanation. "I just don't want to take any chances for you hurting yourself. But if everyone is asleep than you could possibly sneak out," He explained.

"So let me go. Then I won't have to sneak out," I barked. There was a switch inside me. I didn't know how to trigger it, but it switched when Zayn said something about my condition. When the switch was changed all of my feelings went away. Compassion, love, hurt, all of it. Usually I knew how to trigger it so I wouldn't feel anything when I cut. Cutting set of the switch normally. But right now it was Zayn.

"Charlotte you know I can't do that," He replied, trying to keep his voice gentle with me.

"And why not? Your so desperate for company that you have to keep me hostage?" I asked getting up in his face.

His face twisted and he looked away. "Great. I'm so out of here," I said and moved around him. He grabbed my good wrist so I couldn't move forward any more.

"I'm going to help you, whether you like it or not. And so I'm going to ask you the same question as before. Would you like to do this the easy way or the hard way?" He questioned me in a forceful voice.

"I'll pass. Bye," I replied and jerked my arm to have him let go. His grip tightened. It didn't hurt but now I definitely couldn't break his hold. "Zayn. Let me go," I growled.

"I guess it's the hard way," He stated and turned to face me. Like before, he threw me up on his shoulder so I was hanging off.

"Zayn! Put me down!" I yelled. He started to walk to the living room.

"Are you going to behave yourself?" He asked like I was a little kid.

              "Put me down," I insisted.

"So no?" He inquired. I pounded on his back and tried to kick him. He walked through the living room towards the stairs. Everyone was looking at me and I looked at Eleanor, asking for help. She got up and began to follow wherever Zayn was taking me.

Zayn put me in the room where I had slept earlier. If he expected me to sleep he was surely mistaken. He put me on the bed and turned towards the door. I got up and he came to push me back down. His eyes had gone dark and hard as they had earlier. He exited the door and when I heard a click I realized there was a lock on the door.

"Zayn! Eleanor!" I screamed pounding on the door. I ran to the other side of the room where there was a window. I opened it and tried to decide whether I should take the chance or not. I could get seriously hurt from two stories up. But if I tucked and rolled it would only be a couple of bruises. And I had put my bag in here earlier so...

There was a click of the door. I turned just in time to see Eleanor slip in. She closed the door behind her but it didn't re-lock. "You were supposed to help me. Instead of plotting with Zayn to keep me here," I yelled at her.

"Do you have family?" She asked making me go silent. She ignored the question and the fact that she was so calm aggravated me. I glanced at the window that was still open. "Charlotte you could get seriously hurt if you jump," She said following my gaze.

"It'll get me out of here," I countered.

"It's nighttime. Dark. Which means you shouldn't go out at this time," She replied taking a hesitant step towards me.

"Stay back. I'm getting out of the hell hole," I barked. She took another step towards me, staring at my face. Eleanor could usually find a way to flip the switch too. That's why I averted her eyes.

I got up on the window sill, preparing to jump. I could hear Eleanor behind me, trying to tell me to stop. And then, as I was going to start my descent, I slipped so that I was holding onto the edge of the window. "Charlotte!" Eleanor screamed. I could hear rushing to the window. "Give me your hand!" She demanded. I reached up to grab one of her hands. In that moment, the switch flipped again.

"Zayn!" I screeched. Eleanor looked behind herself so I assumed he was in the room.

"You and all of the boys get a blanket and hold the edges. I'll let go of Charlotte and she'll fall safely on the blanket," Eleanor planned quickly. "And hurry!" She yelled.

               "I'm slipping!" I cried.

"Charlotte I hate to say this, but I told you so," Eleanor laughed but it was a forced laughter. She was trying to keep me calm in the dangerous situation.

"Alright! We're set up! Charlotte let go!" We heard the boys yell.

               "Eleanor I can't," I cried.

"Your angel is going to be there to catch you," She said grabbing my other hand so that she had both. "Your safe," She whispered.

I nodded once and closed my eyes. Eleanor let go and for a second I felt myself falling. Then I felt like I was flying. I saw my mom which was impossible because she was dead.

She was holding my hand and we were floating above the boys. Time had frozen. "Mom?" I asked. She nodded.

"I love you baby. Stop blaming yourself. Zayn will help you. Trust him. He'll help you. Zayn will help you," She kept repeating. Then she began fading, still repeating the message. I saw black and then I was in someone's arms.

I opened my eyes and saw that I was in Zayn's arms outside. "Are you okay?" He asked me. I nodded, speechless of what to say.

I was so confused. Was that really my mom? Did she just send me a message from the grave? Or was it someone trying to trick me into trusting Zayn? But how would they know who my mom was? And how did time freeze? I closed my eyes and took deep breaths.

"I don't like being locked up," I whispered.

"I'm sorry love. But you get to me so easily and I didn't know what to do," He said.

"Take a break from reality," I advised.

"And how would I do that?" He asked. I mimicked a cutting motion on my wrist. "That's not the answer Charlotte." He scolded me.

"You're going to make me switch. I need to go to Eleanor," I said quickly.

"What do you mean switch?" He questioned. He looked me in the eyes and I felt frozen in place.

"It's kind of like I have two personalities. This one and..." I trailed off.

"The one from upstairs," He whispered. I nodded. "What sets off the switch?" He inquired.

"You. And Eleanor," I answered. "So I need to go see her so I don't switch," I insisted.

"Are you two friends?" He asked.

"Yeah. In this hell hole I've got a friend," I replied after a minute. He still hadn't put me down. I took it that he wanted to say something but he didn't. Instead, he pulled me closer to him, and planted a gentle kiss on my lips.

"Ain't it good to know you've got a friend? People can be so cold,"
