17. Not Exactly Planned

Zayn POV

Charlotte had a way of driving me insane. I literally didn't have a clue what was going on with me and her. I probably shouldn't have told her friends about her cutting. But it came out anyways and she got pretty pissed off. I asked the two girls to leave and Belle said they would contact us. When Charlotte got back she threatened to leave. I held her and she fell back, hurting her arm. We rushed her to the hospital and I kept thinking of how it was my fault. I realized I would have to be extra careful with her right now because she was super fragile physically and emotionally.

She requested to be normal for the day. Louis changed it to two days and I agreed, trying to make her happy. They dropped the two of us off at my flat and we went in. i got ice out for her but she ran and put it back with me following. When she turned I was awe struck by her beauty. We got caught up in a moment and I was going to kiss her before her mobile went off. Instantly her mood switched to seriousness while talking on the phone. She hung up less than a minute later and walked straight past me to the living room.

I sat down a couple of feet next to her. We watched the tellie for  while as I stole occasional glances at her.  I got a text on my mobile and it was from Louis saying we would have to go out later than normal if we wanted to go out tonight. I told Charlotte and she sighed but then just relaxed again on the couch.

She looked so laid back and normal - if I had just met her I would swear she was mentally stable. “Let’s do something,” She said after a while.

            “Like what?” I asked.

She shrugged playing with her fingers and then turning to play with her hair. I walked to the kitchen and packed a picnic basket with food. I wasn’t sure what was going to happen, or what her reaction would be, but I wanted to see what she would say. “Charlotte, will you go on a date with me at the park?” I questioned. She laughed and nodded a yes, getting up from the couch. I smiled at her reaction as I put my shoes on and checked to make sure we had everything.

I lead the way out the door and down the block. “Won’t the little kids stare?” She giggled as we sat down at the park a couple of feet from where all the children were playing on the play scape.

I shrugged. “Would you like to move?” I asked her. She smiled and shook her head sitting down on the blanket. I pulled out some pepperoni and crackers along with chips and chicken. As we ate, we talked and I asked her if this is where she had come to think earlier.

“Yes. It’s just so peaceful here I love it. I stared up at the clouds like this,” She laid back and looked up, like I wasn’t there. I tried it too, laying back and gazing at the puffy white things in the sky. I could see the beauty in it, true, but I found myself turning my head to the side so that I could look at Charlotte.

She turned her head and caught me gazing at her. Our eyes locked and I felt why she was so calm here. Charlotte moved closer to me a little bit and I grabbed her hand. Something caught her eye in the distance and she sat up. “Swings?” She exclaimed, clambering to her feet and climbing onto a swing. I laughed, getting up and going behind her to push the swing she was on. My mobile started ringing. I picked it up.

“Hello?” I called into the phone.

“Zayn? Can we chat?” I heard Emilie’s voice on the other end of the phone.

“Yes, but give me a moment,” I said and covered the speaker. “Charlotte I have to take this call. I’m going to be a little while okay?” I asked. Charlotte nodded and forced a smile even though she was upset. I kissed her forehead and walked out of hearing range. “Alright – what’s up?” I questioned Emilie.

“As you probably already know, Charlotte hung up on me earlier,” She said.

“Yeah I remember that,” I responded.

“Well I really want to help Charlotte,” She told me.

“I don’t really think that she can handle all of this at the moment,” I answered.

“Which is why I’m trying to tread lightly,” She defended.

“And what is it that you want from me?” I questioned.

“There was this guy that she used to go out with. I think his name was Josh. They would stay out late, and she would always be tired when she got home. She said she loved him but I suspected something was up. After the first week Charlotte always wore long sleeved shirts and jeans for pants. I feel really bad about not doing anything but I think…I think he…” Emilie trailed off, letting her thought hang there. I looked over at Charlotte who was climbing off of the swing. She looked at me and I smiled.

“How long were they together?” I asked, gripping the phone tightly.

            “6 Months,” Emilie spit out.

“Maybe if you weren’t ignoring her then she would’ve come to you,” I snapped and then regretted it.

“I’m sorry for what I did. I truly believe that this is my entire fault.” Her voice cracked.

“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have snapped at you like that. But it’s just so much to take care of her while not upsetting her and trying not to overwhelm her even more,” I sighed.

            “I deserved it,” She answered.

“Feeling bad for yourself isn’t going to help her. I have to go,” I said looking over at Charlotte and not finding her at first. Then I saw her over with a little girl, the two of them talking.

“Thanks for talking to me,” Emilie replied and I hung up. I started to walk over to Charlotte and the girl but she motioned for me to stay where I was. I raised my eyebrows but sat down on the picnic blanket like she asked.
