Everything Has Changed

It's funny how love can change someone. There's no warning. No hints, no heads-up. Deny it if you choose, but it's a fact. No matter who you are, what your age, or where you're from, love will change you whether it's for better or for worse. How do I know? I've seen it happen. To others, to me, and believe it or not, it will happen to you.

2. Ocean Avenue.

For a few months, that's how things were. Harry would come home with Ryan, walk by me (sometimes not even saying hello), and they would go off and play video games. It was strange for me, really. Harry hardly ever paid even the slightest bit of attention to me, yet I still had feelings for him. I still wanted to know him. I wanted to talk to him, and hear about his day. I wanted to watch as he pushed his curls out of his face, or licked his lips in the middle of his sentence while he talked to me.

At school, I would always smile at Harry as he walked by. I saw him two or three times each day. Sometimes he'd say hi, and sometimes he'd just smile crookedly and walk by. I couldn't tell if he liked seeing me, or if he was just annoyed. I don't know why I expected to be able to tell how Harry felt.. It's not like he was a book. I couldn't just read him.

Ryan got a job. He started delivering pizzas after soccer practice. When I found out about his new job, I figured that meant Harry wouldn't come over as often. It kind of upset me, to be honest. I don't know why I cared so much, I barely even knew Harry. But I was still curious, so after dinner I headed up to my room. As I walked past Ryan’s room, I glanced in, hoping to catch a glimpse of Harry. His curly locks were nowhere to be found, so I pivoted on my heels and walked into Ryan’s room and sat on the edge of the bed.

"Hey." He mumbled.

"Hey.. Did Harry go home?”

Ryan glanced up at me, “Nah, he’s on the phone outside.”

“Oh.” I replied.

“Did you want something?”

“Oh.. um, can I ask you a question?" I asked.

Ryan squinted at me before answering. "Go for it."

"Well, I was just thinking.. Okay, since you got a job now... -nevermind."

Ryan looked at me quizzically. "What?" he asked.

"Nevermind." I said, I got up to walk out but he tossed a pillow at me, hitting me in the small of my back. "Hey!" I whipped around, fighting a smile.

"Tell me what you were gonna say!" He said.

"It's dumb. Just.. nevermind." I said and I hurried out of the room.

I went into my room and shut the door. I turned on my radio and started playing Yellowcard’s newest album. Yellowcard was a band I'd seen on a t-shirt of Harry's. They were pretty good; they were a pop-punk group that not a lot of people knew about. I walked across the room and flopped down on my bed, burying my face in the pillow. A few minutes later I head a soft knock on my door.

“What.” I stated flatly, my voice muffled by the pillow.

“Can I come in?”

My body tensed, I scrambled to sit up and finger comb my hair in a matter of seconds.

“Umm.. sure.” I replied.

Harry opened my bedroom door and walked over to my bed. He stood a few feet from my bed and glanced around the room. His eyes lit up and he glanced over at the radio.

“Is this Yellowcard?!” he asked.

“Uh, yeah.. I love Yellowcard!” I lied.

Harry smiled at me, exposing his dimples.

“That’s sick!” He said. “What’s your favorite song?”

I didn’t have any clue, to be honest this was the only time I’d ever actually listened to this band. I glanced over at the radio, and back to Harry’s green orbs, which were fixed on me.

“Th-the one that’s playing now.” I said.

Ocean Avenue. Excellent choice.” Harry stated cooly.

“Yeah.. it’s… it’s pretty sick.” I said, mimicking Harry’s choice of words.

Harry smirked and nodded his head in agreement. He turned on his heels and walked out of the room, air-drumming and quietly singing the words to Ocean Avenue.

If I could find you now things would get better

We could leave this town and run forever

I know somewhere, somehow we'll be together

Let your waves crash down on me and take me away.”
