The True Emotion Games

(Just so you know, this has nothing, I repeat nothing to do with the Hunger Games. It just happens to have a similar name) When Tess's boyfriend Sam dies, she is broken. And when her ex goes on a killing spree of all of her family, aiming for her next, she feels she has nothing else to live for. But right before she decides to end it all, she joins the True Emotion Games, a competition set up by Love/Hate (after all, they really are the same thing). She now has a purpose, a meaning. Find out what the True Emotion Games are (it's in the prologue, you don't even have to read more, I swear) and how Tess copes with them in the True Emotion Games.

BTW, if you leave a comment telling me the name of your movella, I'll definitely read it! Please give feedback also, if you decide to read it. :)

3. Chapter 2: Two Guys, Two Scares

Chapter 2

A cough made Tess whirl around. And stop in her tracks.

"Um, hi," she greeted the newcomer uncertainly. He smiled coyly.
"Hello." He glanced away for a moment and Tess took the opportunity to look at him. He wore baggy but not too baggy dark wash jeans and a grey t shirt with a black leather jacket on top. He looked like the type of bad boy she would have never gone near before Sam died with his sharp cheekbones and piercing blue eyes. He was around her own age. He made her feel so dull. Tess let out a breath and began to play with the ring on her finger. Sam's ring. She looked down at her hand, watching it twiddle with the golden banded ring with a small but elegant few diamonds in the center. Tess felt his gaze back on her and she flicked her eyes back to his.
"I'm Tess. Tess Wilden," she told him with her head tilted to the side, trying to get a read on him. He took a few steps forward until they were two feet apart.
"Jason Nickels. Pleasure to meet you, Tess." Jason gave her a half smile as he extended his hand. She shook it and they eyed each other cautiously. A scream erupted from behind Jason and Tess jumped away from him, trying to see who was there. It was a wild eyed girl who looked around her own age. Maybe younger but certainly not older.  The girl's eyes found Jason and the eyes widened. They were piercing blue, startlingly like Jason's.
"Jason!" she shrieked at the same time he shouted "Holly!"  Tess glanced at him and saw that his entire face was lit up with joy. He sprinted toward her and she ran to him. Jason lifted her up in a sweeping hug and twirled her around in the air. Tess watched silently. Jason set Holly down and stared into her eyes.
"Holly, how...?" But he was cut off by her smiling and pulling him into another hug. Tess had almost confirmed that they weren't together together, and had realized with their looks so similar, they must be related. But she was pulled away from her thoughts by a familiar voice shouting her name. She whirled around quickly and her entire body froze and then whirred to life. It was him. She doubled over and he came rushing to her, his face animated with delight. His hands grasped her arms.
"Tess!" he breathed.
"Sam?" she choked out. He lifted her arms up until she was in a normal standing position. Tess eyed him. He pulled her into a hug. Her body shuddered to a halt, but then she relaxed and wrapped her arms around him. Tess put her chin on his shoulder and closed her eyes. She felt like her body was a machine that hadn't been oiled for centuries, and now there was the oil at last. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Holly and Jason still embracing. Jason's back was to her and Holly's head was on his shoulder like Tess's was on Sam's. Then, horror ripped through her as she saw Holly's face morph into a monster. Holly now had a slightly purple-er face, super duper small beady eyes and razor sharp teeth. Holly grinned evilly and moved her mouth toward Jason's neck. She opened her mouth to take a bite...
"Jason!!!" Tess screeched, jumping away from Sam. "Jason, MOVE!!!!" Luckily, Jason had fast reflexes and he let go of Holly like she was a wildfire.  His face fell, but the emotion cleared from it quickly. He pulled a switchblade out of his jacket pocket and sunlight glinted off the blade.
"You're not Holly," he spat before lunging at her. Tess looked back at Sam and screamed. His face was identical to Holly's. He smiled, revealing his own set of knife-ey teeth. She widened her eyes and took a step back. His body was as still as stone. Then, he came at her. Tess darted to the side, only missing his grasp by a few inches. She had no weapons on her or any way to protect herself so she decided that she would just have to dodge him until Jason could help. Hopefully he wouldn't let Sam-the-demon have her. Hopefully. Sam-the-demon roared and jumped at her. She noticed that his face had taken on a more reddish tinge. It wasn't his color. Tess squeezed her eyes shut and slid to the right. Sam-the-demon's face was getting bluer now. So now he was Sam-the-face-color-changing-demon. That was a mouthful. But Tess's brain could hardly process anything else but staying alive. Sam-the-demon leaped and jumped and snatched at her and Tess dodged and ducked and moved so many times that they were in a rhythm. It was like it was some sort of sick game, and Tess knew that she wouldn't keep winning forever. At some point, she would lose. Only, there would be no more lives. She wasn't a cat, you know. Sam-the-demon took another leap at her and this time, she couldn't move fast enough. His body slammed into hers and knocked them both over until she was pinned under him and she was staring fearfully into his beady un-Sam-like eyes. His hot breath wafted over her skin and Tess tried to hold her breath; the smell was horrible. He caressed her cheek slowly with the back of his hand and leaned in to her neck. He opened his mouth and Tess braced herself for excruciating pain and death.
"Jason!" she yelped out, closing her eyes quickly. She heard him shout her name and waited for the bite into her neck. But it never came. Instead, it felt like she was showered it water droplets. What the heck?, she thought. She cautiously opened one eye and found Jason staring down at her breathing hard, the switchblade still gripped tightly in his hand. Tess opened the other eye and stood up. Holly-the-demon and Sam-the-demon were nowhere to be found. She let out a sigh of relief before more grief came crashing down on her, settling over her heart like a blanket. She clutched her stomach and stumbled to the side. Jason's head snapped up and his arm grasped her arm, steadying her quickly. His touch electrified through her body. And she could tell he felt it too when he removed his hand as fast as the speed of light when she was firmly on the ground and not about to fall.
"Um, thanks," Tess said awkwardly, trying to fill the empty space in the room. He didn't respond, just looked down at his hand, his fingers not loosening on the switchblade, just fingering it nostalgically. "What was that?" Tess finally asked.
"Demons," he answered after a pause. She blinked at him until he looked up at her. "What?"
"It's just... Demons are real? And hold on-" she pushed her hair out of her eyes and put her hand on her hip, "how did you know how to fight them, and... How did you even know what they were?" Tess had her face all scrunched up and she had a faraway, slightly angry but slightly vulnerable look on her face and in her eyes. He stared at her. She stared back. They were quiet.
"Does it matter?" His eyebrow rose at her, daring her to object.
"Yes!" Tess exclaimed loudly. Jason's eyebrows were now knitted together. He looked at the ground. He glanced back at her.
"I..." he trailed off. She lifted her chin higher and sighed, the gust of air blowing her bangs up. They drifted back down into her eyes. Tess pushed them behind her ears. She sighed again and he turned his jaw, irritated. It was obvious that the feeling was mutual. Tess slapped her palms down on her legs and he flinched. She opened her mouth to say something but a different voice interrupted. Tess whirled around and Jason stepped in front of her, wielding the switchblade again. In front of them stood a smug man with blond hair, green eyes, and crossed arms. He wore a yellow and white striped polo shirt and jeans. His thumbs hung in the belt loops casually. There were a pair of Sperry's on his feet.
"Well sorry to interrupt your lovers' quarrel," he paused to smile at Tess's wild blushing, "but there are other people in this room and we would really like to get on with this meeting." Tess looked around, puzzled.
"What meeting?" she asked, stepping out from behind Jason. He didn't lower the switchblade. The polo boy scowled and Tess felt a guilty twinge of pleasure in her stomach. Polo boy didn't say anything. His nostrils flared.
"You can lower your little knife, you know. I'm not going to hurt you!" He wiggled his fingers at Jason who didn't move an inch. Tess side glanced at him and was kind of thankful that he didn't budge. It was a sense of safety that she needed.
"Who are you?" Tess blurted out rudely. Polo boy blinked slowly, and his eyes were closed for nearly a minute. Tess rose her eyebrow at Jason who shrugged in response.
"I," Polo boy started, "am Carl. I am your worst nightmare." Carl tried to look menacing as he stared them down. Tess and Jason burst out into laughter at the same time, so alike that the movement almost seemed choreographed. Carl crossed his arms and pursed his lips, waiting for them to stop. It was nearly five minutes. And even when they were done laughing, Tess was still hiccuping very few seconds and Jason was breathing hard. His breaths sometimes caught and he had short spouts of spontaneous laughter that was contagious to Tess. Then Carl would have to wait again. After what seemed like years, but was only really ten minutes, they were finally calm enough to carry on a conversation.
"So Mr. Nightmare, what were you talking about when you said that there were other people in this room and there was a meeting?" Jason's voice came out low and husky, sexy, but dangerous. His lip curled unintentionally. Carl sneered.
"Ugh, newcomers. You can't see a thing!" Carl muttered. Tess's hand was on her hip again. It seemed that this would always be the reaction with Carl.
"Excuse me?" she asked sassily. He stuck his tongue out at her and turned around. She started grumbling slightly and Jason noticed how her hands were balled into fists. Tess stepped forward to "give him a piece of her mind" as she called it, but Jason held a hand out to stop her. She stared down at his hand on her arm for a while before looking up at him. "Soon," he mouthed. Tess smiled after a tense moment and stepped back. Jason let out a sigh of relief and turned his attention back to Carl who was mumbling something under his breath, his back to them. His hands were tracing invisible patterns in the air, going too fast for Tess to figure out what they were. She glanced back at Jason and saw that his eyes were following Carl's every move. Jeez, it seemed that he had more hidden talents than Tess had even expected. And that's a lot. She smiled to herself. Suddenly, the room filled with people as Carl turned around. Tess and Jason shared a collective gasp of awe as she turned in a full circle. Wow. Just wow.
