1. The Attack

I took a shower and put on my pajamas. It was ten o’clock at night, but as I walked by my parents’ and my brother’s rooms, they weren’t in bed. I assumed they were having a vampire hunters meeting downstairs, excluding me as always because I was only sixteen. I opened my window, then sat on my bed and closed my eyes. I concentrated on trying to hear my family’s conversation but only heard mumbling. I sighed and opened my eyes. They were always having meetings without me. Talking about important things and saying it didn’t concern me because I was still in training. It was so aggravating. Of course I couldn’t talk to any of my friends about it without exposing the existence of vampires. All I could do was mope in my room. My brother Hayate was included because he’s four years older than me. I love him very much and he’s a great hunter, but it’s just not fair.

I saw my bow staff leaning against the wall so I got out of bed to put it away. I stuck it in my closet and shut the door. All of a sudden, I was pushed up against the wall and held there with amazing strength. I tried with all my might but I couldn’t get free. Someone else was in the room with me. My face was pushed against the wall, so I couldn’t see my attacker, and I regretted putting my weapon away. I was only inches from where it previously stood, leaning against the wall. I was trying to think of a solution, it had only been seconds since I closed the closet door. My thoughts were stopped abruptly when I felt a pinching pain in my neck. I knew what was happening then. If I didn’t hurry up, my blood would be completely drained from my body.

I froze in terror when I realized I was being bit by a vampire. I couldn’t think and the loss of blood was making me dizzy. I knew I had to do something. My whole family was downstairs, so close but probably too far away to sense the vampire’s presence. I knew I couldn’t protect myself in this situation, so I did the only thing I could do.

“Hayate!” I screamed. It must have worked because suddenly, I wasn’t being pushed up against the wall and, weak from the loss of blood, I fell to the ground. I saw my brother run into the room with my parents behind him. I was safe. I closed my eyes and fell asleep.

“Ayane, Ayane! Wake up!” someone was calling my name. My eyes fluttered open and I saw Hayate looking down at me, hold something to my neck. There was blood on his hands when he reached for more gauze, the one on my neck totally soaked with blood. Mom and Dad were on either side of my brother, mom looking worried, Dad looking furious. I tried to recall what happened, and as I stared at the deep red blood on the floor, I remembered.

“Where is he?” I asked, wondering if the vampire had fled or if he was lurking in the shadows, planning to go after my family too.

“It's gone” Mom said, “everything’s going to be fine.” I looked at Hayate; a pained look was on his face. I was glad he came to my rescue, and mom and dad too. Just then, my father looked at me and sighed.

“We have to go alert the Hunter Society, it would be better in person.” He said. They were leaving, that’s what he was trying to tell me.

“Its fine” I told him, “I know you have to.” It wasn’t really fine. I didn’t want to be alone. I looked at Hayate, he smiled. Of course he’d stay with me. They walked out the door and left us alone.

Hayate stood up, after getting the bleeding under control, and scooped me up in his arms. I didn’t realize until then that I was still on the floor. He placed me on my bed and pressed more gauze against my neck.

“You won’t need stitches,” he said, “its just deep, that why there was so much blood.” That didn’t really make me feel any better. “Are you okay?

“Yeah.” I said. I felt so stupid. This wasn’t like me; I wasn’t some weak little girl who couldn’t take care of herself. “I’m sorry I let him get away.”

“Don’t be,” he answered before I could say anything else. He understood why I felt so bad. “It’s your first time getting bit.”

“You say that like its common.” I retorted.

“It happens. It doesn’t mean you’re any less of a hunter.” He said.

“Has it ever happened to you?” I asked. He smiled.

“Twice actually. When you’re bleeding in a fight, it’s hard for them to resist. It’s one of their weaknesses.” I was surprised. Hayate’s so strong it’s hard to believe he’d ever let that happen. He grew serious. “It was probably a level E vampire.” E stood for end, humans who were turned into vampires and lost all their humanity. The only thing that controlled them was their bloodlust. “What I don’t get,” he started, “is why it came all the way up here just to attack you.” I thought about that. I didn’t cut myself, so he wouldn’t have smelled any exposed blood. Did I smell different than everybody else?

Hayate stood up and walked out of the room. He came back a few moments later with a bandage in his hand. He took the rag off and wrapped the bandage around my neck. I picked up my head to make it easier for him.

“So it wasn’t a pure blood?” I asked him. If you’re bit by a pure blood vampire, the royalty of their species, you turn into a vampire yourself.

“Don’t worry,” he said “there’s no reason for a pure blood to attack someone randomly like that. And if it was a pure blood, it wouldn’t need to escape; it’d have the power to fight off humans, probably even hunters like us.”

“Okay” I sighed. I was tired. I just wanted to go to bed.

“Keep your window closed from now on, okay?” I nodded. “I’ll stay with you until Mom and Dad get home.” With that, I closed my eyes and drifted off to sleep, knowing I was safe with Hayate watching over me.
