Flute Among Trumpets

This is a school project about adventure stories. The elephant orphanage mentioned is the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust's orphanage, found by Daphne Sheldrick.

9. Hurry!

Our quest was more like rapids. Elephants can't rock climb so we had to go around any boulders or rocky hills. It was hard to get enough to eat on the move, and the tension was beginning to show. Where was the herd? Was this a trap? We just had to continue.

We settled down for the night under a group of trees (after eating their fruit of course). That night, It took me the longest time to get to sleep. And when I did, I had a terrible dream.

Mahun and the herd were standing in a cage, with bars of red energy. Mahun was plainly scared, and she spoke to me.

"Nova! Do not trust what seems easiest!" she said.

"Where are you?" I asked, scared and bewildered.

"Hurry! The Cage-Maker's power grows!"

Then I woke up.

The next day we journeyed at double speed, sending great sheets of water up as we splashed through rivers, and barreling past trees. Mithr seemed to have grown since the Ischeers, and was more determined than ever to find the herd.

By evening we were exhausted and hungry. We were too tired to eat much, and food was scarce anyway. Thankfully, I had no more frightening visions, and I slept soundly.
