Flute Among Trumpets

This is a school project about adventure stories. The elephant orphanage mentioned is the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust's orphanage, found by Daphne Sheldrick.

3. Human Haven and Inspiration

The next day was spent getting used to my new body. In other words, playing. Elephants don't have all the rules people do; just don't bump the matriarch too much and you'd be fine. I was playing with another calf called Ram when Mahun called me.

"Nova, it's time I showed you where most of us grew up. Follow me."

With that, the herd moved after Mahun in a single mass.

We had been walking for some time when I caught sight of some buildings and large stalls. There were baby elephants there, younger than me, and people too.

"This is a home for little ones with no family," Mahun said, "Evil two-legs have killed their mothers and slaughtered their herd, leaving them for dead. However, good souls, like you, have raised the Lost Ones, giving them love and a chance at life. You must help us now, as these people have."

"What can I do?" I asked, feeling small.

"You must send the Killer back to his realm." said Mahun.

I stared around. The little calves were socializing with the herd, hearing stories about wild life. Their eyes shone with eagerness and life. But some were less lively, and had sorrow stamped on their features. How could I not help these little guys? But at the back of my mind self doubt and fear crept forward. I could not hide these emotions from Mahun; she could feel them. I ran off the other side of the group, ashamed at my reaction.
