1. Jungle Girl

"Ally! Ally! Where are you?" My sisters shrill voice cut through my sleep. I sat up, groggily. The sun shone directly through the trees, which had been shading me throughout my slumber.

"I'm here!" I yelled. I got up, my head spinning. In the distance, I could see the house made of logs, wood and leaves, which me, my mom and my 23 year old sister Caroline shared. The house, which my mom and my father had built together almost 15 years ago.

I made my way through the forest, pushing back leaves which slapped my face, sending cool drops of dew onto my face, giving me a good wake up call. I trudged up the wooden steps in front of our house, and into the kitchen, where Caroline sat at the small wooden table, drinking tea.

"There you are!" she exclaimed.

"Whats wrong?" I asked.

"Mom needs you...Where were you anyways?"

I rolled my eyes. Here was Caroline, in full on over-protective mode. "Umm just outside...."

"Did you go to sleep outside again?"

"Yeah...is there a problem with that?"

Caroline blew wind out of her mouth. She brushed her light blonde hair out of her face, and made a disgusted face. "Why do you choose to sleep outside when you have a perfectly nice house? I mean, aren't their bugs out there?"

"There are..but I don't really care." I replied. I was the only one out of our entire family who was born on the island. Mom said that was probably the reason why I loved the outdoors. Caroline, on the other hand, was born and had spent 8 years of her life in New York City, before my parents and her had ended up here.

"Ally! Can you come here for a second honey?" Mom's voice broke the silence.

"Coming!" I yelled.I walked down the hallway towards Mom's room. Right beside it was the small room that I had to share with Caroline. Another reason why I liked to sleep outside. Sharing a bed with Caroline was impossible.

I walked into Moms room, where I spotted her sitting on the bed, staring at a picture. I sighed. I had seen my mother in that same position, staring at that same picture, too many times to count. The picture was of Mom and my Dad. It was from before they had Caroline, while they were on their honeymoon in Jamaica. The reason Mom was so fond of this picture was because she said it brought memories of my father, who I barely remembered.

The story of how my parents and Caroline ended up here went like this: When Caroline was 8 years old, my parents had decided to go on a sailing trip, since my father loved sailing. Unfortunately, they got caught up in a terrible storm, which led them to ending up here, on this small, uncharted island which no on had heard about. After realizing that no one would ever end up finding them, my parents decided to make the best of it and adapt a new life here, building a house, finding food, and exploring the new island which they would have to call home. After I was born on the island, my father built a boat, and set off to try to find better land. According to Mom, his words were "I want a better life for Caroline and Ally. I want them to find love and have kids and live a better life." Unfortunately, he never came back. We all had to presume he was well, dead, because that was really the only other explanation. So mom had spent 14 years of her life alone, with both of us to take care of. Luckily, she got used to it, and we rarely talked about Dad.

"Mom?" I said.

She looked up and smiled. "Hey sweetie. I have a small request for you.

I nodded. "Yeah mom..what is it?"

"A few days ago, I was on the other side of the island, and I found these really delicious berries..I was hoping if you could go there and gather them, since I didn't have time then, and it completely slipped my mind yesterday."

I frowned. Mom never let me go to the other side of the island, which was basically on the other side of a huge wall of rocks just a couple feet from our house. She thought it was, well dangerous.

"Do you really want me to go? I mean, what about Caroline?" I asked incredulously.

Mom nodded. "I want you to go this time sweetie. I think you're old enough. Heck, you're 17!"

I smiled smugly at that last bit, feeling grown up. "Okay.." I replied reluctantly. On the inside though, I felt so alive.I had always wanted to go to the other side of the island.

"Alright then." Mom said. "Grab a basket, and stay safe. If your not back in two hours, I'll come looking for you."

"Geez mom, I feel so reassured" I replied sarcastically.

She laughed. "I'm kidding. Don't worry, nothing will happen to you. Now go along so you can be back before sunset."

"Alright mom." I said, planting a kiss on her forehead. I headed back into the hallway and out the front door, picking up the straw basket on the table. I walked around to the back of the house and towards the path that would lead to the wall of rocks.

I felt a sense of pride as I walked, knowing that my real adventure on this island that I called home, was just beginning.
