I put on a Nike shirt reading: Just Do It. Along with black shorts and my purple flip flops. I tie my hair in a messy bun, grab my phone and rush down stairs. Mom told me today to go out and get a summer job. I decide why not since in the end I will have enough money to go shopping. I grab a mini doughnut from the kitchen counter and pop it into my mouth. I grab my car keys and walk outside and drive off towards the beach.
I live close by, so I decide to apply for Food Shack at the beach. I park my car and walk up to the counter of the shack.
"Hi, do you know if you guys are hiring?" I ask a girl behind the cashier. She nods and walks through a door labeled, 'Employees Only' and returns with a man following her. His name tag reads, Joe and under Manager. I ask him if I could apply for a job and we talk and discuss. After a bit more paper work, he decided for me to start today and I was fine by that. Joe hands me a name tag and a red t-shirt then returns back to the Employee Door.
I write my name on the tag and from the corner of my eye, I can see the girl eyeing me. I close the cap and set it aside. I look up at her and she looks the other way because a women and her daughter approach the shack ordering up some food.
"I'm June, by the way." She says in a scratchy voice.
"Amanda." I reply laconically.
After the costumers leave and I'm sure no one else is looking, I quickly change my shirts and fix my hair along with it. I flung my original shirt into my handbag and we I look up and June is gone.
A few more people order food and I have no problem working the ice cream cone maker or any other machinery. I'm alone and June hasn't return since. I watch a few people surf and children making castles. I pour myself a cup of water and drank it in one gulp. This Miami beach is killing me. I notice a small TV in the corner and flicker it on. I switch to the sports channel and observe as the next few costumers eye the TV and enjoy it.
Just as things were getting settled for me, Joe walks in—again, dragging boy by the arm. I wince back and lean my back on the counter. He flings the boy forward so I can see the features on his face. Shaggy brown hair, blue eyes, thin nose, and small lips; James.
"Don't be late again!" Joe shrieks, before walking through the door. I stand there startled. James works here? I never really paid any attention before so this was news to me.
"You work here?" James asks in slightly cheerful way leaning on the counter.
"Yeah. If an hour counts." I reply nonchalantly. James chuckles a bit and then walks over to me.
"Joe can be such a jerk some times." He whispers to me. I nod and look the other way as a hunky man walks towards the shack.
"One hamburger and orange soda." He orders. I nod and walk towards the grill preparing the burger. I notice the man watching the TV and James pouring him the soda and handing it to him. Suddenly, a hand grips my wrist lightly and I look to see its James.
"Here, I'll help." He says winking at me. He stands directly behind me holding my hand and helps me flip the patty. Ua, ew, my best friend's brother flirting with me? Gross.
I hand the man his change and then stare back to James.
"I didn't need help." I cross my arms and lean on the wall.
"Yes, but I wanted to help you." He says. He walks over and ruffles my hair. What the heck is he doing? All these years I've known him, he's been so mean to me, but now... I stand there awkwardly letting him help me. He's so close I can feel his breath on my neck. I've never been so close to a guy before, but I...I like it. Maybe working here is going to be...a summer to remember.
