1. Prologue

I laid in the tall Ireland grass with Niall, my best friend. Our hands were almost touching as we watched the clouds roll by on this beautiful, but sad day for me. Today was my father’s funeral. He had died in a car crash and left my mother and I behind. Niall had come with his parents to my father’s funeral. They were all friends, until now. We were drifting apart…physically.

“Niall? Do you believe everything happens for a reason?” I asked him. I turned my head and my eyes met his bright blue ones.

“I guess….sure.” he replied thinking for a moment. Niall and I have known each other all our lives and we were inseparable, even though he is fourteen and I’m only thirteen.

I sighed. “Then why did my father die in that crash? Why, because of it, are we moving to the United States? I’m leaving my whole life, and my best friend behind! I don’t want to go!” I felt that lump in my throat returning, but I swallowed it, not wanting to cry in front of Niall.

He smiled sadly. “Well, I don’t know why your father died Jenny. Maybe he was needed up there…but you and I will still be best friends.” He took a pen out of his pocket, grabbed my hand and wrote his number on it.

“I already have your number..” I stated, glancing at my hand.

“Just in case.” he said smiling.

“Well, thank you.” I said smiled. To my surprise, he took my hand again and looked back up at the clouds.

“Anytime…” he whispered, shielding his eyes from the sun. “Maybe…maybe this is all happening for a reason. Maybe, we’ll meet again and we’ll be closer than ever.” he said hopefully.

“I don’t know. All I know is that this really sucks.” I said looking back up at the clouds, a light breeze ruffling my hair. “I don’t want to go to the United States. I don’t want to bury my father, and I DON’T want to leave you behind and have you forget about me.”

He sat up on his elbows and looked me sternly in the eye. “Jenny, I will not forget about you. I’ll call you every night and keep in touch with you. I promise. I will never forget you.”

I smiled and he held out his pinkie. I hooked mine with his and we shook on it.
