17. Getting to know you
"We need to get you some water." Layla said taking her hand. "You have water?!?!" She cried. "Tons." Layla smiled. "I'm Layla." "I'm Ali." She introduced Ali to everyone else. "How long have you been trapped?" Niall asked. "Since it all happened." Ali said gulping down her water. "Three days." Zayn whispered. "Thank you so much." Ali smiled. "I'll be going now. Sorry to intrude." Ali said standing up and walking towards the lake. "No! Stay with us." Danielle called after her. "We can't leave you out there alone." Eleanor added. Everyone smiled and invited her to tag along. "Really?!" She asked. "Thank you! And I know some of you guys from somewhere, you're One Direction right?!" She said excitedly. "Ya that's us!" Louis chimed. "I love you guys! You changed my life and kept me alive." She said revealing the old scars and fresh cuts on her wrists. "I wouldn't have been here if it weren't for you." She smiled. "You helped me." Niall rushed over to her and stole her backpack, throwing and breaking everything that Ali was able to harm herself with. He bent down and planted a kiss on each of her wrists. "Don't do it again." He said, face serious. "I promise I won't." She smiled. "Ok...we're getting close...maybe another hour." Dylan said. We all started walking back towards the lake. "So you've been in there since it all happened?" I asked. Layla looked at me. Her expression was unreadable. We were no longer holding hands, so I went to grab hers to send her a message, but she pulled away. "Ya, it was terrible. Everyone else killed themselves because they were sure they wouldn't survive." Ali said. "Well, we're happy you're ok." I smiled. "Hey Ali! Come here!" Niall called for her as she skipped off towards him. Layla didn't look at me. I grabbed her hand before she could pull away. "What's wrong?" I sent her. "Nothing. Let me go." She said. "No. Tell me what your problem is." "I don't have one. Let me go." She asked, but I didn't give up. "Please tell me." I asked again. She hesitated, letting out a long sigh, "Her." I looked at her, face full of confusion. "Why? You don't like Ali?" I asked. "No...that's the problem. She's too like-able...to perfect.....she's gonna be trouble...I feel it." She said, making no eye contact. "She'll grow on you..." I reassured her. "Ya? That's what my brother said about you guys. And guess what?" She said. "What?" I asked. "He was wrong." She snapped and stomped away. "Ow..." I grinned. She flipped her head around and glared, leaving me smiling in amusement. "You're not the best either babe!!!" I yelled after her. She turned around, thinking for a second before saying, "When did I say you were even decent?!" She smirked and started walking again. "Is that the lake?" Liam asked. "Ya that's it!!!" Dylan yelled. Everyone immediately darted off in that direction, running so fast they were sure to leave blurs from the side. My heart thumped against my chest as we made it closer and closer to the beach. Once my aching feet made contact with the sand, they started to slow down. One by one everyone fell to the ground, panting and gasping for breath. "We made it." Danielle whispered. I looked over to Layla, watching her pump two puffs from her inhaler into her mouth. The light sky was slowly being devoured by the dark. Snowflakes were falling from the sky, landing softly onto the sand of the beach. Some of the soft, white specks were finding their way towards Layla's hair, leaving her with a crown of sparkling snow. I really did like her, but she doesn't feel the same way.
