-- Caycia’s POV --

It had been a busy day. Early this morning I had walked to the mailbox to find the bill for the night of the accident. The bill from Zayn running the red light. I had stared at the picture accompanied with the bill for what felt like hours. I still found it difficult to believe that Zayn had run that red light. Why had he run a red light?

After finally finding the energy to get out of bed and change into clothes that the public would actually find acceptable I made my way to the police station. I stood in line for at least half an hour only to pay a couple hundred dollars for Zayn running that damn red light.

After paying the bill I made my way to the cell phone store, where I was currently waiting to hear back from the employee about what was the problem with Zayn’s cell phone. My cell phone buzzes in my hands.

Have you thought of ways to tell Zayn

I sighed, I didn’t need this right now. Louis couldn’t tell Zayn about us right now. Zayn was going through so many things at the hospital and I think he still needed to figure out what was causing the blackouts before we caused more stress for him emotionally.

Now’s not the time Louis.

“Malik?” The employee suddenly spoke up, talking to the group sitting.

“Yes?” I stood up, grabbing my purse and walking over to him.

“You can follow me,” he stated. He was holding Zayn’s black cell phone in his right hand and began walking further into the store. I followed him back towards a small wooden table which had a large computer upon it. He sat down and plugged Zayn’s phone into the USB port without ever speaking a word. I silently sat down and waited for him to speak.

I fiddled awkwardly with my thumbs. “So it seems as though I have bad news, Mrs. Malik.”

I felt my cheeks redden, “Uh, no it’s Ms. Clemons. I’m Zayn’s girlfriend.”

“Oh.”

I continued fiddling with my thumbs, “So, uh… what’s wrong with Zayn’s phone?” I asked in as un-awkward of a voice as I could muster.

He scratched his head as he stared at the computer. “Well I’m afraid he has obtained a virus from somewhere.”

“How in the world did that happen?” I questioned.

“Well from what I can track here…” he continued clicking the mouse and typing things on the keyboard, “it seems as though he was infected, but not from an unsafe website. I don’t recognize the code on this virus; it seems like an outside source.”

“What? How did he get that?”

“I can’t tell…” He clicked the mouse a few times. “I’m not sure if his phone is salvageable anymore either.”

“Are you sure you can’t like delete the virus somehow?”

He never looked at me. His eyes never darted from the monitor. “I don’t think so… This is some pretty sophisticated virus. His phone won’t even turn on.”

“So what are my options then?”

He laughed lightly, almost as if I was stupid. Ignorant asshole. “Well you can either take home a phone that doesn’t work, or you can buy a new one.”

“Buy a new one?”

He nodded his head, “that’s pretty much your only option if you want a working cell phone that you can actually use.”

“So what happens with that phone then and like all of his contacts and stuff?”

“Well everything has been erased off the phone. Everything he ever had saved on here,” he waved Zayn’s phone in the air, “is gone. Someone planted a virus and wiped it all.”

What the hell? “Was it like those stupid computer websites? Like maybe he accidentally clicked on an unsafe website? Are you sure you can’t save it? I don’t think he’d be too pleased to hear he lost everything.”

“No I don’t think it was a website, and no we can’t save it.”

I sighed heavily, “how much will it cost for a new phone?”

“A couple hundred dollars, probably close to three.”

It wasn’t the money I was frustrated about. Zayn had plenty, he didn’t have to worry about petty things like this, it was the fact that everything he had on that phone had been wiped and he’d never get it back. All of the photos and his contacts and everything would be gone and I knew he’d be upset. But my hands were tied. There was nothing else I could do about it, I had no other option but to buy him a new phone because he needed a phone.

“Okay fine.” I pulled my wallet out.

The employee pulled out another black iPhone and started hooking it up so Zayn would have a cell phone to use. I felt my phone buzz within my purse and so I pulled it out, looking at the screen. Louis again.

Are you sure you don’t want to tell him now?

He had sent that text ten minutes ago. I pinched the bridge of my nose.

Zayn still needs time Lou, he’s going through some stuff at the hospital

I sent back. The doctors still thought Zayn had PTSD and so something as traumatic as this could set him back. He was already progressing so well and I didn’t want anything to upset him while he was still trying to get all of his emotions back in check.

“Okay, well all you have to do is pay now.” The employee handed me the newly activated phone. I paid with my debit card and walked out the store, adding in any of my relevant contacts into Zayn’s phone. I headed to the hospital, wanting to see him after a long day.

-- Zayn’s POV --

I rolled over, rubbing the sleep out of my eyes. Why did I still feel so tired lately? It had been nearly two weeks since the accident and I was still sleeping ten or more hours each night. I sat up in bed and looked to my right, where Abby had a laptop lying on her lap.

“Hey, I didn’t know you were allowed to have those here! If I would’ve known I would have brought mine!”

She never cracked a smile, “I just use it for small things.” She quickly locked the screen and closed it.

“Oh, okay…” I said, feeling like I had made her uncomfortable. “When did Niall leave?” I asked, trying to change the subject.

“He left about ten minutes ago, not long after you fell asleep.”

“It’s great to see he’s doing much better,” I knew she didn’t know him but I was mostly speaking aloud to myself.

“For sure.”

Wait, what?

“Hey baby,” Caycia’s voice echoed in my ears.

“Babe!” I exclaimed, using my arms to help sit up in bed.

“Oh no, don’t worry about getting up, it’s just me.” She smiled at me.

“It’s good to see you,” I whispered when she was in front of me, she leaned down, grabbing both of my cheeks within her hands and kissing my softly and slowly.

“So why’d you come visit?” I asked, she jutted her hip out, placing one hand on it, “Uh, not that I meant it in that way.” I quickly defended myself.

“Don’t worry babe, I know what you meant.” She smiled before pecking my lips once again. She grabbed the seat on the other side of the room before placing it in front of my bed and taking a seat. “I have some news and some stuff to ask you.”

“That never sounds good,” I laughed trying to untie the knot I felt within my stomach.

“Oh, it’s nothing awful, but it will probably upset you.”

“Do you want to maybe go for a walk?” I thought about it for a second, “or you could actually grab the wheelchair and we could go outside? I haven’t been out in a while and I could really use a smoke.”

“Sure,” she threw her purse on my bed and walked out of the room and grabbed a hospital wheelchair. She began wheeling me out of the room. “Oh shit, hold on let me grab cigarettes.” She jogged back over to the bed and pulled a small pack of cigarettes out of her purse before walking back over and pushing me towards the elevator, but not before grabbing a large blanket to cover my body with and my winter jacket.

When we got outside I realized just how cold the winter air was. I mentally thanked myself for wearing slippers and slipping my winter coat on in the elevator ride down. Caycia found a small bench and wheeled me right in front. She pulled two cigarettes out and sat down on the bench. She lit both and we instantly took a drag, relaxing almost immediately. She didn’t smoke as much as I did, and she was definitely slowing down drastically, but it was nice to have someone to share talk over with a cigarette.

“So what’s this news?” I took a drag, loving the taste of the nicotine on my tongue. Fuck I missed being able to have regular smokes.

“Well firstly it’s about your cell phone.”

“Mhm,” I murmured with the cigarette in between my lips.

“Well it turns out you have a virus?”

“A virus?” I questioned.

“Yeah the cell phone guy said you have some sort of sophisticated virus and that they can’t fix it.”

“Where the hell did I get that from?”

“He didn’t think you got it from like clicking on an unsafe website. He said something about an outside source…”

I watched her blow the smoke out, watching just how sexy she looked, “I uh… I really don’t know where I would’ve picked that up from.”

“Well it gets worse…” I said nothing and so she took that as a cue to continue, “it turns out the virus wiped everything on your phone. Everything you ever saved on your phone is gone.”

“Fuck,” I muttered, “really?”

“Wow, okay. You’re taking this much better than I expected… Anyways, they couldn’t fix it and so I had to buy you a new phone for you.”

She fumbled in her pockets, “Oh shit. I must’ve left it upstairs in my purse.”

“That’s okay, really. I’m just glad I have a working phone now.” I took a drag, “what’s the other news?”

She looked away from my eyes, smoke coming out from between her lips, “I had to pay a ticket,” she said without looking back at me.

“For what?”

“You uh…” She cleared her throat, “you ran that red light on the night of the accident Zayn.”

I stared at my slippers when she finally gained the courage to look at me, “I’m aware of that.” I practically whispered.

She grabbed my hand, “why?” she was whispering now too.

I couldn’t bring it in my to look into her eyes and so I talked to my slippers, “I was showing off my car, y’know…”

“But why would you run a red light?”

“Well obviously I didn’t expect to get hit! I didn’t expect to put Sean into a coma!” I ran my fingers through my hair in frustration, feeling my pulse beginning to race and my mouth beginning to dry. “Harry was speeding too, in case you weren’t aware! I don’t know why I ran it but I can’t help but think what if. What if you were sitting beside me in that car? What if you would have died? What if Niall would have died? What if Sean dies? I will never forgive myself Caycia! And you need to know that I am constantly living with this guilt. These scars on my arms are a constant reminder of the guilt that I am feeling, that I will always feel for putting so many people I love in danger and through pain and suffering! I don’t… I don’t need… I’m so…. c- confused… ab-about…”

And all I heard was Caycia’s panicked muffled screams and the rushed voices of doctors as the blackness swallowed me whole within a minute once again.
