1. Making Plans

“Emily!! Get your ass down here. Now!” My step father called from downstairs. I kissed my sister’s forehead and then rushed out of my bedroom and down the stairs.

“Yes?” I asked him when I reached the bottom step.

“Get me a beer.” He commanded. I walked to the fridge and got out a Bud Light for him. Then I walked back towards where he was sitting on the couch.

“Here,” I grumbled holding out the beer.

“You’re lucky I’m tired but you’re going to pay for that later,” He snapped. I frowned and turned around to head back upstairs. “Did I dismiss you?” He yelled. I sighed as I walked back to where he was. He grabbed my arm and twisted it painfully.

“Ow!” I whimpered even though I was used to the abuse and it doesn’t hurt that much anymore. Robert, my step father, would abuse me and sometimes my little sister. He would hurt you and if you didn’t act like it was killing you then he would increase the level of pain. Rob released my arm.

“Now you’re dismissed,” Rob grunted. I rubbed my arm as I walked away. I climbed the stairs slowly so it wouldn’t make any noise. I proceeded to my bedroom where I had left my seven year old sister. I brought my finger to my lips to show her that she had to be silent and then I closed the door quietly.

I sat down on the bed next to her and pulled her towards me. She touched my arm where Rob’s finger imprints were still there. “Kylie I’m fine,” I whispered to her. “Go to sleep,” I whispered again. I pulled the blanket up and wrapped my arms around her. Soon she fell asleep. It was eight o’clock now and I usually went to bed at nine.

I climbed out of the bed carefully and walked to my desk. I turned on my lamp and pulled out my Calculus homework. By the time I was finished with all of my homework it was nine thirty. I put all of my stuff away and climbed back into the bed.

I just laid down in my bed for a while thinking. I was a eighteen year old girl in her senior year of high school with an abusive father and younger sister. I had to find a way to escape but it would be extra hard with Kylie.

There was a park about two miles away but in order to get there you have to walk through the woods. Once at the park we could crash for a night or two before buying a bus ticket to London. I had some money saved up and I hoped it would be enough to get away.

My last thought before I fell asleep was that I was graduating in two days and then I would be able to leave.

When I woke up it was to my sister tugging on my arm. “Are you okay?” She whispered.

“Yeah I’m fine. Why?” I asked her in a low voice.

“Yeah I’m fine. Why?” I asked her in a low voice.

“You were kicking and crying in your sleep,” She replied. I wasn’t too shocked but I felt bad for my sister. For the past three weeks I had been having night terrors and it had woken her up.

“Sorry baby. Just go back to sleep,” I soothed her. Soon she fell asleep again and I pulled the blankets up further for warmth.

Beep. Beep. Beep. My alarm went off in the morning. I reached over to hit the off button. I climbed out of bed and grabbed a black long-sleeved shirt. Pulling it on I realized today was the day before my graduation. I smiled a little to be thinking of something I had to be grateful for.

When I was done getting dressed I re-applied the concealer I had to my neck and face. My step-father normally aimed for my face but since I went to school I had to cover it up. “Wake-up sweetheart,” I whispered to Kylie. She turned over and opened her eyes. “You’ve got to get ready for school,” I said a little louder. She sat up first and then stood up. I gave her clothes to change into and she changed.

We finished getting ready and then headed downstairs. I dished up some cereal for Kylie and I and then cooked some sausage and eggs for Rob. Kylie and I ate our breakfast and then I wrapped Rob’s dish up in foil so it would stay warm. “Let’s go sweetie,” I whispered to Kylie. She smiled and we grabbed our backpacks.

I locked the door as we walked out and made sure to close it quietly. After living with Rob for almost three years now I pretty much figured out how easy it was to get awake and pissed off.

Kylie and I held hands as we walked down the street to her school first. Her school started after mine did but I would always drop her off and her teachers would let her wait inside. The teachers at Kylie’s school seemed genuine; they cared about Kylie. What they knew though, was that their step-father had a job that required me to drop off Kylie early on mornings.

“Alright be good. Love you baby,” I said to Kylie when we reached her school. I kissed her forehead and then watched her walk into the school. She waved good-bye to me and I forced out a smile to her.
