1. The Big Day
Beep, beep, beep. I woke up to the sound of my alarm clock ringing loudly on my bedside table. I glanced over to see that it was 7 30am. I jumped out of bed not wanting to be late for my big day. I heard my mother frantically packing in her bedroom, mumbling to herself about what she was going to wear and bring with her. As I headed to my bathroom, she came out from her room with a big smile on her face. “You already Sunshine?” she asked with her sweet, anxious tone. Sunshine was what she called me when she was trying to offer encouragement, or when I was upset or worried about something. I replied with an unsure voice and said, “Yeah, I guess so!” I turned around to enter the bathroom and began to run the shower. I let the hot water run down my back as I collected my thoughts. “This was it”, I said quietly to myself. I could feel my nerves starting to take over, so I stood in the shower a bit longer than usual to try and calm myself down. As I got out and got dressed, I realised there were still some things I needed to pack. Miami was far from my house here in Edmonton, and I did not want to leave anything behind. Today was the day we left Edmonton for a little while, and began my musical journey. Miami was where my mom and I were headed for the week, to do some interviews, photo shoots and of course perform in the America Airlines arena at the end of the week. I was very excited to begin my journey as a performer, but was a little bit unsure of what was to come. My mother was my manager, and she had been by my side since day 1. I started out locally; performing right here in Edmonton, but I had been recently discovered by a musical producer named John. He was quite confident in my voice and appearance, and began setting up dates and places for me to perform, starting with this week in Miami. I had never done anything like this, but ever since I was young, I always played guitar and loved to sing and write songs. This was just the beginning, I could feel it.
