“Why weren’t you answering?” Denver’s loud voice boomed over the phone as I waved at mom and headed up the stairs, jumping with excitement.
“Busy with mom,” I replied as I entered my room.
My room was still shrouded in darkness by the curtains I hadn’t bothered to pull open.
I headed for the midnight black silk that hid the light and yanked it open.
Sunlight streamed through the square shaped ivory glass windows and brightened up my room.
“What was that?” Denver yelped at the sound of the curtain pins rolling against the rail, screeching in protest at my insistence.
“Just yanking open the curtains Den. Nothing much,” I replied as I smiled at the jumpiness of my old friend.
“So… what did your mom want?”
“Just came by to… hmm… talk.”
“Did she walk in on you and another guy?”
I nodded in reply then face palmed myself as I recalled her being unable to see through the receiver.
“Uh huh. You should’ve seen her, Den. I’ve never seen mom blush more than she did then,” I laughed quietly as the memories from then dwelled into mind.
Denver laughed along, probably imagining the image of mom turning the same shade as a ripe tomato.
“So what did your mom wanna… ‘talk’ about?”
“Oh…. Y’know,” I tried to keep the excitement out of my tone.
“No… I don’t know Rora… That’s why I’m asking you.”
I chuckled lightly. “She got me… a…”
“Kill the suspense Rora. What did she get you?”
“NATALIA, if you don’t tell me this instant, I’ll…”
“Okay, okay Den. She got me a boyfriend… Geez woman, chill!”
The silence on Denver’s end was a new one. She never ever as long as I’ve known her remained silent for more than a minute.”
“She got you… a WHAT?!” her loud shrieky tone made up for her silence as I tore the receiver away from my ear, cringing at her loudness.
“That’s what I thought you said… Uh… A boyfriend?”
“Yes, a boyfriend.”
“Oh come on Den… Yes, a boyfriend. Let’s not become one of those girls that go about this for ages.”
“Oh-Kay. Fine… Last time though… a boyfriend??”
I rubbed my forehead, driving away the migraine beginning at the meaningless banter my friend was makig, “Yes, Den. A boyfriend. B-O-Y-F-R-I-E-N-D. Boyfriend. Now, do you want me to explain what that is?”
“I’m not mental Rora. Of course I know what a boyfriend is. I’m just… just surprised is all. That, hmmm… wait, are you going along with it?”
“…” Was I?
“Okay…. So you’re going along with it?”
“What makes you think I’m going along with it?”
“Oh c’mon Rora. I can hear the excitement in your voice,” she replied and I smiled at the thought that my friend knew me so freaking well.
“Yeah, well… I didn’t actually go along with it at first,” I admitted, “But then…”
“But then? Then what?”
“I found out who he was and well…”
“It, you could say… worked out.”
“Oh c’mon Rora, you’re forgetting the juiciest detail. Who’s the lucky guy?” Denver’s voice gave me the idea that if she was nearby she’d have strangled me to death for making her kinda suffer. “Or is it the unlucky guy?”
I cleared my throat, dragging the suspense. Coz after all, it isn’t just any day I get to hold the upper hand. I sighed then stretched my already loosened muscles.
Then I plopped down onto my still not made bed because the housekeeper came around only on Saturdays per mom’s rule of independency.
“AURORA NATALIA JESSICA REESE!!” Denver screamed into the phone.
“My name’s not Jessica,” I protested after having yanked the line away from my ear.
“Whatever! I needed another name for effect. So now I’m calling you Jessica too, Rora. Now who the eff if this guy you’re being forced to date and don’t waste any more time or I’ll drag my ass over there right now and---“
“Okay, okay. Sorry Den,” I apologized insincerely as I tried to hide my laughter at her explosion.
“I’m just having fun right now coz… Well coz you will never guess who mom matched me up with. It’s just ridiculously funny and well… kinda strange in a did-that-really-happen way, y’know Den?”
Den chuckled dryly. “Yeah… yay… strange and funny. Got it Rora. Now who the heck is the guy?” her tone had become like the tone she used when she saw another girl go after the latest Chanel handbag from their summer collection.
“Okay, I’m. Gonna. Be. Dating…” I couldn’t resist the suspense which at a slight growl from Den ended as I added, “Nathan Sykes.”
“Shut the hell up!” she repeated, stunned I guess.
“Yeah… Nathan Sykes from The Wanted.”
“Shut Up Rora. Shut Up!”
“Rora, I’ll be there in ten. This type of news isn’t the on-the-phone type of news. Why didn’t you ask me to come over?”
“Den, I w---”
“Shh!!” she shushed me hastily. “I’m on my way. Don’t do anything. Don’t say another word. You got some Diet Cherry Cola there?”
“Shh! Doesn’t matter. I’m bringing some over. Be there in ten,” with that she hung u[ before I got another word in.
Hmm… she took that saner than I expected.
