17. You're just a boy
*Jamie's P.O.V* "She's in a lot of pain," she said, her mouth in a grim line. My thoughts were scattered. I was so exhausted that I could barely stand straight and had to lean on Niall for support. "But she'll be alright?" I asked weakly. The veterinarian looked me in the eyes. "She's been through so much. Partially blind, an amputated limb...but I don't think she'll be able to survive this one,'' she told me sympathetically, placing a hand on my shoulder. I shrugged it off. '' The collision with the car has taken its toll on her. It'll be a miracle if she makes it through the night," she informed me, understanding my wariness of her and backing away. ''The best thing to do right now is to put her down and put her out of her misery. I'll give you some time to think this through,'' she tells me. ''Thanks,'' Niall says as she walks away. She nods in acknowledgement. "Are you alright, Jamie? You're shaking," Louis asked, as he touched my shoulder. I wanted to tell the vet that she was wrong. Mira would make it. "The best thing you can do for her right now is to let her ago,"she advised me. I started to walk away, heading for the bathroom without saying a word. Once there, I locked myself in a cubicle, breathing deeply. I felt breathless. I let my emotions get the best of me, as I broke down in tears. *Niall's P.O.V* ''She's been in there for a while. Should I go check on her?'' ''It's a female bathroom,'' Liam stated. ''I know that,'' I replied, frustrated. ''But I need to be with her. She needs me,'' I said. ''Hold on. I'll go,'' Perrie offered, letting go of Zayn's arm. ''Thanks Perrie,'' I said gratefully. I ran my fingers through my hair. I realised that Lou was sitting in the corner, his face buried in his hands. I made my way over to him. ''It's not your fault,'' I told him. ''Then why do I feel like it is?'' Lou asked miserably. Suddenly, the bathroom door swung open, revealing a red-eyed, shaking Jamie, her hands clenched by her sides. She marched up to the vetenarian. ''Do it,'' she grunted, before walking out of the animal hospital. She got in her Chevy Impala alone and drove away, leaving the boys and I out on the pavement, confused. ''What's she doing?'' Zayn asked. I could detect the worry in his voice. ''I haven't got a clue. But we need to find her,'' Liam advised. Half an hour later... Harry stayed behind to deal with the situation involving Mira. All of us would miss her. We'd been driving around in Harry's car, searching for Jamie's Impala but so far, there was no sign of her. We'd tried calling her too but she probably switched off her phone. ''Alright lads, I think we should go back to the flat. It's getting late. We'll think of something when we get back,'' I suggested. The lads agreed and we were back at the flat soon. And to our surprise, we spotted Jamie's Impala parked nearby. I ran up the stairs and stormed into the flat. ''Jamie!'' I yelled, looking around for her. I noticed that her door was closed and as I approached it, I heard some shuffling. Reluctantly,I knocked on the door. ''Jamie? Please open the door. I just want to talk to you,'' I told her. There was no reply. I knocked again. ''Please, Jamie,'' I begged. Still no reply. ''I'll be right outside if you need me,'' I told her, before walking into the living room to join the lads. ''I'll go fetch Harry,'' Zayn offered. ''I've gotta send Perrie back home anyway.'' ''Alright. Goodnight,Perrie,'' I said, hugging her. ''Goodnight,'' Perrie replied to all of us, after we all gave her a hug. ''Jamie's taking it hard,'' Liam stated as Zayn and Perrie walked out the door. I took a beer out of the refridgerator and chugged it down. ''I know.'' ''I think she hates me,'' Lou said sadly. ''No,'' I convinced him. ''She's not like that. She's just tired and losing Mira was....'' There was loud crash in Jamie's room. I jumped to my feet and forced my way into her room. Right away, I noticed that her closet was empty. ''What are you doing?'' I asked, worried, as I saw Jamie stuffing her clothes into her suitcase. ''What does it look like I'm doing?...I'm leaving,Niall,'' she told me coldly. ''What do you mean you're leaving?'' I asked, stepping towards her. I reached out to take her hand but she shied away from her touch. ''I mean I can't take it here anymore.'' ''You're insane! You're exhausted and hungry and....please just sit down and let's talk about this,'' I suggested, trying to keep my wits. ''There's nothing to talk about,'' she said, not looking at me, zipping her suitcase. ''Just hold on for a minute!'' I begged, grabbing her hand and turning her around to look at me. ''You can't just pack your suitcase and leave us! You can't just...leave me! Look, I know it's difficult. I know being with me is difficult. But we promised that we'd get through anything, right?'' I pleaded. I couldn't let her just walk away. ''Promises are meant to be broken,'' she said softly, roughly snatching her hand back. I was infuriated. ''What are you talking about!'' She ignored me and packed her remaining belongings into a backpack. ''Why are you doing this?'' I demanded. ''I can't live here anymore. I need to leave,'' she repeated. ''You don't need to do anything! All you need to do is be with me.'' Her eyes welled up again and she sniffed. ''Please don't make this any harder than it already is,'' she begged desperately. I stepped towards her and tucked her hand behind her ear. ''Then don't leave,'' I begged. ''Please stay. The lads need you. I...need you.'' She looked away and held my hand. ''I have to.'' That did it. ''Why!'' I burst out. ''I don't understand! If you want someone to be angry at or hate for that matter, hate ME! It wasn't Louis' fault that Mira got out! I shouldn't have made you come home with me. This is all MY fault!'' I yelled. ''Oh Niall,'' she murmured. ''I'm not mad at any of you. And I could never hate any one of you. Liam,Harry,Zayn,Louis...they're like my brothers. They're family. I love them. I love YOU. I always will. And Mira meant much more to me than just a pet. You'll never understand,'' she tells me as she picks up her suitcase. ''For God's sake, Jamie. Don't do this!'' She gave me a kiss on the cheek and headed towards the door. ''She's just cat!'' Jamie stopped in her tracks and looked over her shoulder. ''And you're just a boy,'' she remarked, walking out of the door. I ran after her and Liam and Louis were standing, a confused expression on their face. There was nothing we could do to stop her. We watched in silence as she loaded her bags into her Chevy and got into her car. She glimpsed at us. The expression on her face was unreadable. It can't just end like this. *James's P.O.V* I was on my bed, strumming my guitar. Everything was going well for the band. We were going to leave for L.A soon. I was humming Connor Maynard's 'Vegas Girl'-the first song Brad,Tris and I covered as a band on YouTube. What a tune! I was interrupted when my phone vibrated furiously on the bedside table. ''Hello?'' ''James?'' a shaky, raspy voice whispered from the other line. ''Jamie?'' I answered in surprise after checking the caller ID. ''Are you alright?'' ''I'm fine,'' she answered after a brief moment of silence. ''I'm sorry to bother you but, do you think I could give you a visit? I know it's very late at night and it'd be completely reasonable if....'' ''No, it's fine,'' I told her. ''Come over,'' I invited. ''Good,'' she sighed in relief. ''I'll be there in a few seconds.'' ''Great. See you soon,'' I said before she hanged up. Well, that was strange. As soon as I put my phone down, the doorbell rang. I hastened to open the door. ''Hi James,'' she greeted. Jamie didn't just look exhausted, she SOUNDED exhausted. She looked as if she was about to faint at any minute. ''Jamie? You look...what happened?'' ''Can I come in?'' she pleaded desperately. It seemed as if she was shivering. It was probably brutal out there. ''Of course! Come in!'' I offered, stepping out of the way. She smiled weakly at me, her hands in the pockets of her jumper. I noticed she was still wearing the necklace I got her. ''Thank you...for letting me come over,'' she murmured. Her cheeks were flushed, her lips pale. ''Did something happen?'' I asked cautiously. She flitted her gaze away. ''Did Niall?'' She cringed. ''Niall had nothing to do with it,'' she told me firmly. ''It's Mira. She's been in a road accident and...'' Mira. Her cat. ''Oh Jamie,'' I murmured, enveloping her in a hug. Mira was more than a pet to Jamie. Mira symbolised hope-she reminded Jamie that nothing is impossible. That being in love with a person like Niall, and for Niall to love someone like her, was possible. ''Jesus!'' I exclaimed, shuddering. Through the thin shirt I was wearing, I could feel how cold Jamie was. ''You're bloody freezing!'' I quickly ran into my room, grabbed a few blankets and turned up the heating before passing the blankets to her. I hurried to the kitchen to grab her a cup of tea. ''Here you go,'' I said, passing her the tea. She sipped it slowly. ''Thank you,'' she said gratefully, some colour returning to her lips. ''Are you alone here?'' ''Well, I was. Until you came along,'' I teased, trying to make her smile. She did, although her eyes didn't match. ''I'm not bothering you, am I?'' ''No,of course not. It's nice, you visiting me. It's been a long time since we last spent time together.'' ''I know,'' she agreed sadly. ''A lot has changed since then.'' I nodded in agreement. ''But I'm glad you still remember me,'' I joked. ''I could never forget you,'' she said, placing her cup on the table. She took out her phone and checked something, her eyebrows frowning. ''Is everything alright?'' ''It's fine,'' she answered, looking up at me. She put her phone on the table as well. As she did so, I caught a glimpse of the promise ring Niall gave her. She gushed over it when she told me about it over the phone. ''Twitter is insane,'' she sighed. She was probably scrolling through her Twitter mentions. ''Tell me about it,'' I said, checking my phone as well. There was a new direct message. It was from Niall. ''Did you know I have my own fanbase now?'' she asked me. I didn't reply as I read the message. '' They're called the Jellies,'' she laughed sardonically. ''Or something like that.'' She stopped talking. ''James?'' I didn't answer her. I was reading a text message Niall had sent me seconds ago, as Jamie was taking about something related to jelly. ''Niall sent you a direct message on Twitter too? Will you please just..ignore it? For now?'' she begged. The look in her eyes made me put down the phone. I'd do anything for her. To her, I was her best friend. But to me, she was much more than that. ''Let's do something crazy,'' she offered. ''Something we'd never think of doing.'' ''What did you have in mind?'' She pursed her lips, thinking. Then, her eyes brightened up. ''Would you like to go for a drink?''
