Rebellious Choices

When Bella is matched with her best friend Jacob, her family couldn't have been more pleased. But a mistake is made, and she rediscovers Edward, a kid she had long forgotten about in her classes. They become friends, and Bella decides that she might want to be with him more than her matchee. Can she break the match without starting an all out war?

FYI, this is the first story. I am working on a second story to begin where it ended.

5. Explanations and Apologies

Impatiently, I fussed with a loose thread on my shirt sleeve, pulling and twisting, until it broke off. I then tried to sit still for a minte, but soon my ankles started twisting in spirals, as much as I tried to stop it. Finally, the tall lady from the banquet glided out. "Ah, Bella. You are very prompt. Good. Follow me this way," she said, leading me down a hall to a small office. Closing the door, she pointed me to a chair and commanded me, "Sit." Obediently, I followed her direction, not wanting to cause more trouble than there already was. Before I was completely lost in thought, she began to talk. "Bella, we cannot apologize enough for what happened with the microcard. Someone hacked the system, one of the sorters, and put extra information into our matching pool. It put people who shouldn't have been there in, those destined to be Single and such. The cards were also hacked, we predict, only hours before the banquet. It's a huge crime, because it not only has upset you, it is unfair to the other person. You are still matched with Jacob, don't worry. Did you know the other person?" I knew that there was no point to lying. "Yes," I said, finding my voice, "it was Edward Cullen. What were the chances that I not only knew my Match, but that I also knew this other person?" I asked, cautiously edging my words. I didn't want to get him in trouble either. "The odds, already slim, are next to impossible. The worst part is that Mr. Cullen could never be matched to you because of what he is." What? I blinked, not comprehending. "I beg your pardon? You mean, he is destined to be Single?" I asked, still being very cautious. "Oh no Miss, he isn't destined to be Single either. The Law of the Society strictly forbids Vampires from being Matched or take any part in the Matching process. It's not his fault." Edward, a vampire? Why, no, how, could he live in our Society then? Vampires are threats to all citizens according to the Society. The official seemed to read my questions off my face. "Edward was, to phrase it, 'tamed' at a young age. He was trained to drink animal blood instead, still giving him energy without harming anyone. He proved to have perfect self restraint, and is now allowed to stay with an adopted father ame mother, both of whom are like him. Their secret is one of utmost importance, if another citizen finds out, it could result in mass panic. I have told you this," she said, answering my new question, "because it now partly affects you. Jacob is still your Match. Nothing is changed. I had a new card made for you, and I personally checked it myself. And if you know what's good for you, you will not tell anyone about this. It could cause many, many severe consequences." She stood up, and I followed her lead. "Ma'am, you won't have to worry. No one will hear a word about this from me," I reassured her. She shook my hand and guided me to the lobby. "Farewell, Bella Swan, and hopefully next time we will meet under more pleasant circumstances." I nodded modestly to her and walked out the door, heading for school, where I would soon see both Jake and Edward.
