I tried to put on a brave facade after that for my friends, even trying to convince myself that everything was okay. Things were a lot easier on the next Monday when Edward didn't show at all, a lot easier to be cheerful and talk with my friends. A week went on and I began to loosen up, my barricade slipping. The following Tuesday, I was walking towards the cafeteria, laughing gaily amongst my friends. I didn't notice that he was back until I stood up to head biology, and he appeared in front of me, talking with Jake animatedly. I frowned and headed to Bio. I didn't think that Jake and Edward were friends, but there they were, chatting away like two old ladies, standing right in front of me. I shook it off and sat down in my usual spot, and turned to see Edward sitting right beside me. I jumped in surprise. How did he get there so quickly? Then I remembered the thing that I had pushed to the back of my mind: he's a vampire. Duh. He started speaking to me, which also surprised me.
"Hey," he said, "I'm sorry about Friday." I shook my head. "Don't worry about it. I was just afraid to talk to you. I sometimes know too much about things." His eyes widened slightly, but the rest of his expression remained smooth. "You know?" he asked, his voice barely hearable. In an equally quiet voice, I replied, "There was a mistake, and an Official had to come talk to me. She slipped." He frowned slightly. "And they didn't do anything about you knowing, like try to make you forget?" I sighed. "No, they knew that I knew perfectly well if I told. I can't get reclassified, for Jake's future's sake." He turned away, looking a little upset. "I'm sorry," I whispered. "I never meant for any of this to happen." He glanced at me. "Bella, it's not your fault. I just think... that it might be good for you to stay away from me for awhile." I raised my eyebrows. he turned away and scooted over to his end of the table. "Wait, you're serious?" I asked. I knew the answer before he said it himself. "I'm sorry Bella, it's for the best."
