Watching a movie with One Direction was as entertaining as you probably imagine it to be. They all screamed like children when scary parts would happen. Like when it was zoomed in to Harry Potter's -- I mean Daniel Radcliff's -- face and in the hallway you could see a creepy lady, they just about flipped. Especially when she turned her head to look at him, oh, it was great. I had the time of my life, and it helped me forget about that look Harry and I shared.
When the movie was finished it was 11 pm. Niall already crashed so we decided to go to bed. I walked to my room but right as I was about to go in someone grabbed my arm. It was Liam.
"You want to meet Paege tomorrow? We can go to Starbucks and get some coffee. I think you'll like her." He said.
"Um, yeah, sure. Sounds great." I faked a smile.
"Ok how about 11 in the morning?" I nodded and quickly walked into my room. I shut the door and changed into my PJs. I laid in bed and stared at the ceiling. I sighed and tried to fall asleep dreading meeting Paege tomorrow. She was probably way prettier than me, that's why he went after her. I'll bet she's a slutty gold digger. I fell asleep with a frown on my face trying to imagine what Liam saw in her.
The next morning I woke up and looked at the clock. It was 10 already. I quickly got up and took a shower. I blow dried and straightened my hair and threw on a tank top and jean capris. I put on my converse and by now it was 10:45. I walked out of my room, sat by the kitchen table, and texted my mom where I was going.
Liam walked down the hallway 5 minutes later and grabbed his keys.
"Ready?" He asked. I nodded though I wasn't ready at all. "We're going to meet Paege there." He said.
The drive to Starbucks wasn't too awkward, just a little bit. We didn't date date, we just had a thing for each other when we were 15-16 so it was a little weird that he was introducing me to his girlfriend.
"How long have you been dating her?" I asked.
"7 months next Thursday." He said. I didn't see anything in his eyes when he said that. No joy or pride. That made me feel pretty happy but maybe my eyes were playing tricks on me. I just went with it though, it made me feel better about this whole thing.
"Wow, that's a long time." I commented.
"Yup." That's all I got as a reply.
We pulled up to Starbucks and got out of Liam's car. I saw a pretty blonde wave at Liam and he waved back and smiled. I put on a fake one. I followed Liam over and pulled at my brown hair. It was an ugly dirty color and I started feeling a bit self-conscious. She was beautiful, and she knew it.
"Paege, this is my old friend, Brandin." Liam said. I looked at her.
"Hey." She said chewing her gum. You could pretty much feel the awkward. I tried to smile a little.
"How do you know Liam?" She asked right off the bat.
"Ok, let's order something to drink." Liam said obviously feeling the tension. Paege glared at me and grabbed Liam's hand right in front of my face. We walked over to the counter and put in our orders. When they came we sat down.
"So how long have you been friends with Liam?" Paege asked me sipping her coffee.
"Since we were kids." I mumbled stirring mine with a little straw I grabbed.
"So you know him well?" She asked like he wasn't even there. I glanced at Liam.
"I--" I tried to give her a snappy answer, but Liam interrupted me.
"We're just buddies, it's fine." He said to Paege. Ok, that hurt. She just smiled, satisfied. I glanced at Liam, then at the floor. Liam and Paege chatted for 10 more minutes then Liam said we had to go. I got up and, if looks could kill, I would have murdered Paege. She made a face at me and I flipped her off behind my back as we left. She knew I liked him.
I didn't talk to Liam the whole car ride home. He tried to make conversation but I just stared out my window.
"So, what do you think of Paege?" He asked. I sat quietly. Or he'd ask, "How was your coffee." Once again I just sat. Finally he stopped and I could tell he was mad because he gripped the steering wheel very tightly.
When we got home I opened my door and stalked towards the door. I went inside and headed to my room, but Liam grabbed my arm.
"What the heck was that all about?" He asked me angrily.
"What?" I asked innocently.
"Don't start with me." He said through gritted teeth.
"Oh, nothing's wrong Liam." I said getting sarcastic. I laughed a little. "It's not like you hurt my feelings or anything. Oh no, no,no." I tried to go to my room but Liam still had my arm.
"I kind of had to to keep my girlfriend happy." His voice was raising.
"Since when have your girlfriends become more important than me?" I shouted. By now it was noon so everyone was awake. Louis and Zayn came into the entrance of the hallway. I didn't care, I kept going.
"I was always first to you. I was always your best friend!" I yelled. I heard Harry and Niall ask what was happening but Zayn told them to shut up. I kept going.
"Then you leave, and all of a sudden show up at my door a year later for no reason whatsoever and get me back as you best friend. Or that's what I thought. I must not be your best friend in your eyes. I'm just your 'buddy'." I said putting in air quotes. "That's all I am to you? You're buddy?" Tears were streaming down my face. "I thought we knew each other better than that. But I guess I thought wrong."
I wrenched my arm from Liam's grip and slammed my bedroom door behind me. I just bawled (*A/N is it bawled or balled, I don't now xD) my eyes out. I sank down to the ground with my back against the door and cried and cried. Someone knocked on the door.
"Go away!" I said weakly.
"Brandin it's Zayn." I heard a quiet voice say. I sniffed, wiped my tears, and stood up. I opened the door and there stood Zayn looking at me. I started crying again. He hugged me and I buried my face into his chest.
I stopped crying after maybe 5 minutes and we sat on my bed.
"Wanna talk about it?" He asked me. I nodded.
"You know what I told you about when you guys left, I felt lost and broken. When Liam came back for me I was mad at first. But I wasn't really. I had waited for the day to come when he came back. I missed you guys so much, I couldn't stand being without you." I sniffed.
"We used to be best friends, we told each other everything. No secrets. But then at Starbucks today," I sniffed again.
"His girlfriend asked how well I knew Liam. I was going to answer her that we were best friends since we were toddlers but Liam interrupted me." I felt tears coming again. I thought I'd cried them all out. But I held them in. I wasn't going to cry again.
"He said, 'We're just buddies, it's fine', or something like that. It hurt. Worse than when he left -- sorry to keep bringing that up -- because this time I knew we weren't the same anymore." I wiped my nose. Zayn hugged me again.
"I'm sorry, babe." He said. "He was wrong to do that. He should have told Paege what the truth was."
"That's what hurt. She hates me, I know it, but Liam really likes her. He likes her enough to lie about me and him. Before, when the girl was a bitch, he'd break it off with her. I guess I'm just used to being his number one." I said.
"No matter how it seems now, you'll always be his number one." Zayn said. "He just has to remember." I nodded.
"Thank you Zayn." I said honestly. This boy was my therapist, I swear it. "Where's Liam?"
"Out..." Zayn said nervously.
"Where?" I asked. Actually, I pretty much demanded.
"With Paege." He mumbled.
I stood up and felt like I had to break something. I grabbed the picture of him and I from that first night and started to throw it against the wall but I felt Zayn grab my arm gently and pry the picture out of my fingers.
"Don't do something you'll regret later." He whispered in my ear. He set the picture on my nightstand and started to walk out of the room. He stopped in the doorway and turned around.
"Everything will work out. Ride that roller coaster of life, babe." He winked at me. I smiled a little bit and followed him as he walked out of the room.
I sat between Zayn and Harry in front of the TV. Niall sat by Zayn and Louis by Harry so I was in the middle. Harry, Niall, and Louis all looked a bit wary but when I acted quite civilized they relaxed.
We were laughing at some stupid joke a commercial made when the door opened and Liam walked in with Paege. We all stopped laughing and I looked down.
"Hey boys." He said like I wasn't even there. So this was what we're playing. The 'Ignore-Each-Other-Until-Someone-Cracks' game. I was good at this one. All the boys mumbled hello, and Liam and Paege walked to Liam's room. Disgusting. I could only imagine what they did in there. Zayn looked at me and I shrugged.
"Two can play this game." I said.
"I thought you were single pringle?" Niall asked. I giggled a bit at how he makes everything relate to food.
"He ignores me, I ignore him. It's kind of how we fight." I explained. "We ignore each other until someone apologizes."
"Are you sure that's the best way to do it?" Louis asked. I shrugged again.
"Seemed to work a couple years ago." I said.
I turned back to the TV and let the conversation drop. I started thinking though. This fight didn't make me forget about Liam. It made me think about him even more.
This 'game' wasn't a good idea after all.
