I asked dad where he was staying and awkwardly hung up. That was really strange. Shawna? Who the heck is Shawna? Did my dad remarry already? I walked down the steps to find Lex's mom making dinner.
"Do you want to stay for dinner, Brandin?" She asked without turning around.
"Thanks, but no thanks. I told my dad I'd be at his hotel in an hour." I said, regretting every word. I did want to stay. I didn't want to face my dad and this "Shawna".
"Where's he staying?"
"At the Brichford." I said.
"That's quite fancy." She commented.
"You got that right." I said angrily. Lex's mom either didn't notice my tone or chose to ignore it. I'm assuming the latter.
"That's only 10 minutes away. Do you want to drive to the mall and get a new phone first? You don't have to walk there, you know." Now that I could accept.
"Sure, sounds good. Thank you." I said smiling at her.
"Well, dinner's finished, so how about we eat first and head out?" I nodded.
After we ate, I hopped into her car and we drove to the mall. It only took me about 10 minutes to find the exact phone I had before and pay for it with the last bit of money I had. Hopefully dad will give me some when I see him.
"...and you should have the same contacts as before." The salesman said.
"Thanks!" I said gratefully. As we walked out I said the same to Lex's mom.
"You've been such a help to me if only for an hour." I said.
"It's no problem. Now how about we go see your father?" She said opening the door and getting in the car. I did the same and nodded slowly. I was so dreading this. As we drove to the Brichford Hotel, the fanciest in the county, I thought of Harry. What was he doing right now? I only left 2 hours ago... had he called Louis? or any of the boys? I'm doubting he called Liam or Zayn... would they fight because of me?
The more I thought about it, the more I realized that I was a bigger problem than I was a help to the boys. I only caused arguments and drama. Maybe it was a good thing this "M" broke me and Harry up.
We pulled up to the hotel and I hugged Lex's mom.
"Thank you so much." I said gratefully.
"It's no big deal. Do you want me to have Lex call you when she gets home?" She asked.
"Um, no, I'll call her. I have to discuss some things with my dad." I said quietly. She nodded, understanding.
"Ok, just call if you need anything." I nodded and stepped out of the car. I looked at the front doors of the hotel and started inside.
"Do you need a room?" The secretary asked.
"Um, no, I'm looking for Daniel Grass. Is he here?" I asked.
"And who are you?"
"Brandin, his daughter." I said.
"All right, let me buzz his room." The lady said. I rolled my eyes when she turned around. Couldn't I just go in? Seriously. She came back. "Room 307, 3rd floor."
"Thank you." I said before heading to the elevator. I didn't even notice the fancy lobby and hallways with the bellboys and expensive decorations that I knew were present. I focused on the elevator, and once I got in, hit the floor 3 button. I picked up a person on each floor making it take even longer to get where I needed. I tapped my foot impatiently and got strange looks from important people, I'm assuming, because of my sweats and hair.
Once the door finally opened, I turned left and found room 307. I knocked hesitantly on the door. It opened immediately.
"Brandin." My dad said too seriously. "Come on in."
I walked in awkwardly and sat on the couch in the living room space. Dad sat on the bed across from me.
"Look, you weren't supposed to find out this way." He began.
"Find out what?" I asked. "I don't know everything, remember?" He nodded.
"Of course. I don't want you to take any of this the wrong way, and please don't get mad at me. Don't kill the messenger, and remember that it takes two to tango." I nodded. Of course, something was up, and him and mom were both on to it.
"It all started when your mother and I dated in college. We dated for almost 7 months, but broke up. I started dating another girl later on, and soon proposed to her because I knew she was the one." He paused. I nodded.
"We got married soon after." He continued. "This is a woman named Shawna." I exhaled. "I received a call almost a month into our wedding from your mother. It seems that she was pregnant with you. My child. So, after a long week of phone calls, arguments, and sleepless nights, we decided that we would fake our marriage to cover up for her pregnancy. You see, back then, it wasn't a common thing, and you were looked down on for that kind of thing." I tried to understand.
"So you and mom weren't really married? You had another wife at the same time?" I asked quietly. He nodded slowly. "Do you have any kids?" I asked quietly. He nodded again slowly.
"Two. A 12 year old girl and a 9 year old boy." My half-siblings.
"Do you even love me?" I whispered as tears filled my eyes. I remembered all those days and weeks when dad was on 'business conventions' or so I thought. Mom knew this, too, and didn't dare tell me.
"Of course I love you, I've been in your life the entire time."
"Don't say that." I said tightly. "All those weeks and months you were at 'work' you were really with... Shawna."
"Only some of the time."
"So it's true, though. You were living a double life!" I said standing up.
"Brandin just let me expla-"
"No." I said pointing at him. "You've done enough explaining. I'm going to leave now. You will let me go, so I can clear my head. I'll be back later." I headed to the door.
"When will you be back?" He asked. It was almost like he was begging me.
"I don't know, a week? It'll give you plenty of time to be with Shawna." I said. Ok, that was a little harsh.
"At least take some money." He handed me an envelope. "It's your 8th grade graduation gift. A little late, but I wasn't there for it..." I nodded as tears filled my eyes. "I'm sorry." He added. I looked at him.
"Me too." I headed out the door.
*Beep* *Beep* *Beep*
I pulled out my phone.
Unknown number. Greeeaaat.
"So daddy's got another woman. What else is he hiding from you? -M". I let the tears fall and deleted the text. I searched through my contacts for the one person I felt I could talk to. I waited for him to pick up.
Whaaaat is going on?! Ugh this just makes me sad. Poor Brandin!
