The procession passed the coffin and I layed a rose down on top of all the other roses and flowers from other mourners. I walk sullenly to the rock path when a gentle drizzle starts down on us. Libby bounds toward me and wraps her arm through mine. I know shes trying to be chipper, but I really didn't want it today.
"Why does it always rain at a funeral or when someone dies? It just gets so annoying!" I mutter. Libby stifles a laugh and pulls a small black umbrella out from her bag.
"Mind if I use this small thing?" She smiles at me and I shrug, so she opens it up and we both huddle under it. I look over and see Nathan's parents holding back their tears as guests come to console them.
"Should I tell them?" I look Libby, in the eyes. She stares me down then nods a yes. As the last guest says the "I'm sorry for loss shit", I walk over to Nathan's parents.
"Oh hello, Cosette. Nathan couldn't stop talking about you. He hadn't lied when he said that you're gorgeous." I blush and look down, my hair falling in my face at Nathan's mom's comment.
"I was wondering if I could talk to you for a second." After they agreed, we walked over to a gazebo by the gravesight. We sit down and I look them in the eyes.
"I know this is already hard on you, with your sons death and all, and I don't mean to make it any worse, but I feel like I should tell you why he crashed,"- I look to see if they are still with me and notice that they have my full attention-"Nathan had been pestering me a lot to have sex with him, and every time I refused. But he just kept on asking and finally I agreed, so he would just stop asking. The next day was Valentines Day, he was sweet and all at school, and I brought him to my house. We started making out in my room and just as we were starting, we heard my garage door open. So he jumped across to his room. Anyway when we were all asleep that same night, Nathan jumped back across and put sleeping pills in our mouths just to make sure everyone was asleep and finished what he had started, except he had more control and he went hard. I figured out I was pregnant and he told me what he did. I got mad at him, but then he promised to help me through it. He didn't want to go to New York with you because, he wanted to be with me. One night I was asleep with him next to me and I woke up and I was bleeding. He rushed me to the hospital and the doctor found out that I had miscarried. When he got to my house, I yelled at him for letting this happen and I slammed the door in his face. I didn't check to see if he went back nextdoor, but I guess he went to the highway instead." I take a deep breath and looked up. Their faces were red from tears gently streaming down their faces.
"We are so sorry. And thank you so much for helping us understand why." They both leaned in and hugged me. I nodded a thank you and met up with Libby by the trees. The rain was starting to pick up, so we ran to the car and drove off.
"Well don't be to down on yourself girl, I don't need another death over here." I manage to smile at Libs, she always says the right thing.
"Thanks Libs, you don't know how much it means for you to cheer me up." She gives me a great big hug then puts her hands on my shoulders.
"Let's get out of this depressing drab and go bowling!" She grabs my hand and runs up the stairs to my room. She flings a pair of skinny jeans and a "Cool Story Bro" Toy Story version sweater at me. She grabs some more skinny jeans for her and her "Hispta Please" shirt out of my closet. It's amazing that we're the same size. After we dress, we pull on our black converses and head over to Craig's Bowling Alley.
